If so, that probably won't fly, but I could be wrong. If others have used the forcedeth, you are, and have no problems.....move on to the next issue. all your sound modules are loaded.....it seems. You're using alsa, so have you unmuted and turned up sound with a mixer? kaba_desu Posted May 21, 2004 Report Share Posted May 21, 2004 Unfortunately I'm not at home right now... and I won't really get a chance over the weekend. load xmms, and then in another terminal type kmix, the controls your sound, have a fiddle with it. My only suggestion to you is this: Re-install madrake. and then. Install your modem. then. Install xmms. I really don't think there's anything wrong with your sound. I haven't had any problems with mine at all. I think that perhaps you need to stop comparing linux to windows... you don't always need the official drivers to make stuff go. I was told that I will not get sound unless I can install the Nvidia motherboard drives. I will try another clean install tomorrow. Thanks again. I'm going to be re-installing my computer at some stage - so I'll keep an eye open for anything that seems odd. You may also want to look at you bios settings? hmm... another thing to try is. start xmms. Go to xmms preferences (you get to this the same way as you do in winamp) The output should be OSS Driver... (I think) Click configure. Then make sure that xmms is using the C3media thing for both. Sorry I can't be more descriptive than that. I'm going by memory. I think your number one priority should be the modem for now. Do you have that working yet? I remember how much it used to suck to have to reboot to windows to get the information I needed for stuff... Plus, I didn't have a printer so I had to write a lot of stuff down. Last year I had rh9 and I used the ltmodem drivers to connect to the internet. This year however I decided that I wouldn't mess around with winmodems anymore, and I picked myself up a cheap external modem that required nothing more than my username, password and phone number to connect to the internet. I did read a thread somewhere which said "remember to unplug your speakers during install." I have no idea why that would matter. But you could give that a go. linux_learner Posted May 21, 2004 Report Share Posted May 21, 2004 (edited) i have had this problem before. make sure artsd is loaded. in kde hit alt-f2 and type "artsd" (no quotes) and then hit enter. to check and see if artsd is loaded pull up shell (konsole) and type "ps aux | grep artsd" (no quotes). the sound is more likely associated with the modem than the video card. winmodems typically include the sound card or something like that. the modem isnt remembering to activate the driver on boot up. to activate the drive its "modprobe" whatever the module is. (for me it was modprobe pctel and modprob ptserial). a clean install probably will not help. its better to fix the problems you have. They are obviously not Linux users. During the install, Mandrake will detect either your on board sound or sound card and IT installs the appropiate drivers. Other than the Video card you don't need NVIDIA anything. Try to stop thinking along the lines you were used to in Windows. This causes most of the difficulties and grief we see here at MUB. Don't keep trying to fix 3 or 4 things at the same time. Concentrate on ONE at a time, because it doesn't just make it hard for yourself but extremely hard for any of us here at MUB to help you because we do not know if you are trying the suggestions and what the results were if any. That is why I haven't bought into anything in particular so far. You have me confused as to what you are actually doing. Slow down and let us deal with ONE PROBLEM AT A TIME please. Cheers. John. I am glad you got your modem working while I was writing this post. Since you have solved the problem PLEASE TELL US how you did it because it maybe helpful to others at a later date. There is not enough of this done by many people who have obtained resolutions from their own or other people suggestions. Now we can deal with the sound problem. Please tell us what your sound system is . Is it onboard you are using and if so what is it ?? Is it a Sound card, if so what is it ??? S May17 0:10 /opt/kde3/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -s 5 -m artsmessage -l 3 -f username 435 0.0 0.3 1832 628 pts/6 S 08:15 0:00 grep artsd notice how it listed both, the actualy service (more accurately called "daemon") and the search that was performed. again, if you DO NOT have artsd running, you can hit ALT-F2 (its just like the run box in windows) and type artsd. then check and make sure you are not muted. mandrake mutes the sound by default.
