Richiev
I have been trying to install the Nvidia drivers on Mandrake 9.2 Download Edition but with little success, If I was to purchase the new version of Mandrake 10 (the stable version that will be release around may) would the Nvidia drivers be installed by default, saving me the problem of installing them separately, also are there any other benefits of purchasing the software rather than downloading it, apart from supporting future development. Any info on installing the drivers or purchasing the software would be very useful. Thanks Richie
Ixthusdan
I would recommend buying if you like supporting Mandrake, which is a good idea. But, there is really nothing that you can buy that you can't do now. Would you tell us what problem you are having with the nvidia install? Perhaps we can resolve the issue! Guest anon
Welcome to the board. What problems are you having installing the Nvidia drivers? Can you say what you have tried giving exact details of where the errors occur.

Guest anon
So you installed the nvidia driver, (it installed OK?) edited the file and changed the "nv" to read "nvidia" Saved the file, and then restarted X? (CTRL ALT BACKSPACE) You saw no Nvidia splash screen? Can you post your XF86Config-4 file?
Richiev
Yes, i installed the driver, it went through all the checks and retuned me to the konsole, i edited the config file (see below) and when i restarted x nothing happened. The following is my XF86Config-4 file which i changed the 'nv' to 'nvidia' # File generated by XFdrake. # ********************************************************************** # Refer to the XF86Config man page for details about the format of # this file. # ********************************************************************** Section "Files" # Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together) # By default, Mandrake 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of # the X server to render fonts. Ixthusdan
If you are certain that the driver installed, then starting x from a console will give a failure report that could be useful. From the command line, simply type "startx" and wait to see what happens. Report here with the errors. You installed the drivers outside of x, right? Richiev
yes i think i install out side of x I followed the instructions from here http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/nvidiainst.html but now i come to think of it i don't remember loging out, i only types telinit 3. I then istalled using the sh command i did recive this message 'Failed to initialize the Nvidia kernal module' I am totaly new to linux and have very little experiance in the konsole. Thanks again
Ixthusdan
Failing to initialize means that the nvidia kernel is either not there or malformed, take your pick. Boot into linux in text mode, or command line. That's prob'ly what it's doing now. Login and then become the superuser, (su, password). Navigate to the nvidia installer and install again. Note if it tells you that the driver was installed successfully. Exit root, type "startx" and see if it comes up this time. Something I forot about, and it was a problem I had, before running the installer again, type "modprobe nvidia" and then "startx" . If that works, there is a different thing to do. Try it first. aRTee
As for the initial question: I always recommend people to buy once satisfied. Like in a restaurant, if really not satisfied, you don't want to pay. In a decent one, they will ask you what's wrong and make you happy. Mandrake Linux is not the same in the sense that they may not be able to make you happy. Your happyness or satisfaction is in your own hands. So: try to get things to work the way you want. (Hey, you will learn a great deal in the process, hopefully if linux is for you or not, and how to deal with things... you got the first thing right: you came here for help :P ) Then pay money if you can afford to. This way, you will never be an unsatisfied customer.
Richiev
Right Firstly, thanks for everyone for the help and advice, I tried typing "modprobe nvidia" and then "startx" and got the following message INIT: Switching to runlevel: 3 Stopping dm: [OK] And nothing else happened. I also tried re installing the driver but with the same result, Blank screen etc. Any other suggestions
aRTee
ok, seems you got the nvidia driver compiled and installed (else you would have gotten an error on modprobe nvidia). Instead of startx, try telinit 5 and, in case that doesn't do anything, also as root: mdkkdm or kdm
Richiev
Hi All I have tried the command suggested by aRTee but with no sucsess mdkkdm did nothing, just said unknown command and kdm made the screen flash about 5 times and then return to the shell i was using. I did find this in another forum but i am unsure where to put it within the XF86Config file I have a crt monitor so I added the line, option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "DFP, TV" and it now boots perfectly. from here http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread...&threadid=25013 does anyone know where it should go or even if it is of any use. (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting *** (II) UnloadModule: "nvidia" (II) UnloadModule: "vgahw" (II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
