the thing is, Texstar uses a portal that is fairly easy to hack :S

 

And wether he's a Linux or Windows user doesn't matter...the only thing that matters is he is stupid and a danger to a fair and good internet.

"Dear Mr. homeowner,

 

You may have noticed that you no longer possess your nice stereo, and theatre system. I would also like to draw your attention to the graffiti I have decorated your walls with. I personaly feel that I am an basicaly a good guy so I would like you to know that you should have deadbolts countersunk on your kitchen door, to prevent any other intrusion into your home. I appreciate your things and nice home. I hope there are no hard feelings.

I heard they are working on using another portal system. But that won't emliminate themselve's from being a target.

 

I believe there are only two requirements you must meet in order to be hacked.

 

1) You are connected to the internet or another computer

2) Your machine is ON

 

Other then that everything is hackable !--- and to increase your chances --- just use anything that allows any sort of scripting or programming that adds interactivity to your sight, whether its SQL, PHP, PERL, CGI, ASP, etc. The more the website offers, the more chances to increase the number of security holes. The more popular the program, the more popular it becomes to script kiddies.

However ;-)

 

I think there is quite a differnece in stealing all your stuff and shuting your website down for a bit. :P

 

They could have shut it down or re-directed it to a nasty porn site and never told him how to fix it. This person is on the line of a gray hacker, knows how to do bad but "tries" to use it for some good. They showed him that it was vunerable and then told him how to fix it. Your down right black hackers could careless if you ever got it working again.

Don't get me wrong. I wasn't dissagreeing. You're right, he did have a little tact.

I still think my analogy was correct. The hacker stole Tex's time and effort. (although he did shorten both by pointing him in the right direction) He also stole a valuable tool for noob's like me (although that was a short period also) And any screwing around with someones website is like vandalizing their home.
