First nobody has access to them, and there is no point using space for old distros of Mandrake/Mandriva that haven't been made/maintanied in over 10 years. ianw1974 Posted August 26, 2021 Report Share Posted August 26, 2021 Yep, really old distros released between 2002 - 2004 which are obsolete now since they don't get updates. Building a distro means building all the packages, hosting them somewhere so that people can download them. Dev work required to compile, build a distro, test, etc, etc - so needs load of people to do it. No point in using sources that are 20 years old. More like, "If you want a history lesson or a trip down memory lane, then here are the ISO files for you to try out." In no way should these ISO files be treated or used like a modern operating system. I ended up on these forums looking for the original Mandrake ISOs for a history project. I work for an organization that originally installed Mandrake on machines that we gave to community members for free. Now we install Linux Mint, but we've gone through several distros throughout the last 21 years. ianw1974 Posted August 27, 2021 Report Share Posted August 27, 2021 @gilmore.t OK cool :) yeah Mandrake 7.1 was my first installation ever with Linux, which was why I generally got involved again with it when I took more of a serious look at Linux in general, and ever since 10.0 have been Linux every day since then, albeit plenty of different distros in between. I also use Linux Mint on my laptop/desktop, and mainly now Debian/Ubuntu on servers depending on the requirements. Also looking more into Rocky Linux now since CentOS is no longer what it used to be. I checked the mirror now, seems they only left the 32 bit ISO's, whilst the mirror data is there for x86_64, no ISO's to be actually able to install. Was going to get Mandrake 10.1 myself now, just to make a VM out of it, might have to do some googling. Either that, or just mess around with the 32 bit one. I was able to get the 8.0 image up and running in a VM. I've never had to emulate a SCSI drive to get an image to work, but it was required, along with loading both ISO files found in the download folder. I had to start by creating a Virtual Hard Disk (not a Virtual Disk Image), then change the controller in the settings to SCSI BusLogic, start the VM with the Mandrake80-inst.iso, install as far as I could go, then when it prompted for the second disc, I left the VM running, went into the settings, changed the image from xxx-inst.iso to xxx-ext.iso, went back to the still running VM, clicked OK (as if I had just inserted the second disc), and finished the install. Since I did this last week, I don't remember if it was limited to 32-bit, but I thought it was 64-bit.... Hrmm. Oh, well! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
