"If it aint broke, don't fix it" I was messing around with my system (Running Mandrake 9.2 - Gnome) today and decided that I would take a look at my internet/network settings. In the Mandrake controll center, I selected the "configure your computer to share an internet connection with others" (or something like that) option, and went thru the setup. I meant to quit before finishing, but didn't. Now my computer won't connect to the Internet. I ran the other program to configure my connection, and corrected the settings, but I still can't get on. When I log into GNOME, I get an error box stating that it can't connect to "bla, bla" and suggests that I add it to /etc/host. I added it, but I don't think that I did it right. This is my work computer in my home office, and I desperately need a connection. I don't ask for much (ok, ok that's a lie. I'm in here asking for help all the time). Surely someone must have some kind of tips for me. More info: ADSL Connection dhcp When I installed Mandrake, the auto configuration got me on the internet with no problems. More details - ADSL No router Firewall dissabled lan Called my provider and they said gateway would be automaticaly assigned unless I paid for a static line. (I didn't, but she gave me the gateway numbers just in case) Logged into windows and got DNS, Gateway, Subnet Mask, IP, and DHCP info. Manually inputed that info, to no avail. I'm going to go log back into Linux and see if I can get some screen prints. And to think, I was going to completely remove windows today. Good thing I decided to wait. kmc77 Posted April 3, 2004 Author Report Share Posted April 3, 2004 Spend some more time on it. And noticed that the automatic detect keeps trying to set up an ISDN connection. I have to unselect ISDN and select ADSL. It seems to me this should all be pretty much automatic. Once I tell it what kind of connection I have, there is no othere information that should be required (since IP, Gateway, Mask etc. are automaticaly configured.) I'm considering throwing in the install disk and doing an upgrade (since it set it up right at the first install) Anybody know if that might work? No one I've talked to can tell me what's happening either. When I look at the settings, they all match up. I would hate to format and restart the whole process, but that's quickly what I'm comming to. It's either that or go back to Windows........ Nah, that's not really an option :P Anyway, If anyone has experienced this or might know where I can begin to find some answers, please let me know. Most of those Support personel know less than my wife :lol: and are reading for FAQ/cards, giving you some generic M$ answer that may not even apply to linux. You say you are on a lan w/o a router.....are you the gateway? How do others connect? All connect, direct? HUB? what? You haven't posted the output of route.....so how can we help?
