no21
From what I've gathered from searching the web for hours, the SB Live no-sound issue is common. But all I want to do know is....does a solution exist? I feel like I've tried every suggested fix in all the different threads relating to this issue, and nothing works. I'm running MDK 10 CE. Mandrake Control Center says this about my sound card: =================================== Vendor: Creative Labs Alternative drivers: audigy:emu10k1 Bus: PCI Bus identification: 1102:6:1102:1003 Location on the bus: 2:9:0 Description: [sB Live! (By the way, the mic is muted, and I've check to make sure all the appropriate volumes are not muted via the volume control and alsamixer.) Ixthusdan
Are you sure that your ac97 on board sound is completely off? I have a soundblaster live, several years old, and it works fine. (It wouldn't work in MEPIS)
no21
I went into alsamixer and found a couple fields labeled 'ac97' something and I made sure those were turned all the way down/off. Still no sound. So I rebooted, double checked the ac97 settings were unchanged, and still no sound. Any other suggestions?
bvc
un-muted? or try the oss driver.
Ixthusdan
What I mean is that the ac97 on-board audio chip needs to be off in your bios. Two different audio chips playing around with drivers can be quite a headache. If Mandrake sees two audio devices, it will try to run both of them. no21
Well, I didn't think I had on-board sound, but I will double check the BIOS anyway. I'm new enough that I'm not sure I know what you mean by "try the OSS driver." Although I did see a lot of talk about OSS drivers in my search for a solution on the net. (By the way, after reading something on the net, I did a modprobe pcspkr at the command line, and that was successful at allowing me to hear the lovely beeps out of the PC speaker. )
Germ
Delete /etc/asound.state Silly question...Did you save the settings after you adjusted alsamixer? Adjust then exit alsamixer and use the command alsactl store as root. Check aumix and kmix settings. Go to the KDE Control Center and make sure sound is enabled. reboot or restart alsa Edited March 23, 2004 by Germ
no21
I did just what you said, and it looks as though the settings are being stored. I'm running GNOME, but when I typed 'kmix' from the command line, I got a ton of messages - most of them warnings, but the last few messages were the following: ==================================== Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed kmix: ERROR: Alsa mixer cannot be found. Please check that the soundcard is installed and the soundcard driver is loaded. kmix: kmix: ERROR: Alsa mixer cannot be found. Please check that the soundcard is installed and the soundcard driver is loaded. ==================================== Does that help troubleshoot the problem at all? And one other thing, in the Control Center, under the heading of "Uknown/Others" in the Hardware section is listed [sB Live! Value] Input Device Controller. And then in the information window, I see the following: =========== Vendor: Creative Labs Bus: PCI Bus identification: 1102:7004:1102:1003 Location on the bus: 2:9:1 Description: [sB Live! Value] Input device controller Module: unknown Media class: INPUT_OTHER =========== Once again, any help is appreciated. Thanks for all of the suggestions so far. Ixthusdan
The input device controller is your joystick port on the sblive card. I have never used mine, so it is always "unknown". What kind of motherboard do you have? Perhaps a model number? The alsa driver is "snd-emu10k" where as the oss driver is "emu10k". I use the latter driver. no21
I guess the motherboard info didn't help any. I knew it! SB Live sound card owners ARE screwed!
bvc
that card happens to be one of the more 'supported' soundcards in linux. It works. Post your /etc/modules.conf file.
no21
Here are the contents of my /etc/modules.conf file: probeall scsi_hostadapter imm ppa probeall usb-interface usb-uhci alias eth0 8139too above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1
bvc
I would edit it to say; #above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss #alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1 above emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1 put emu10k1 in /etc/modprobe.preload open a terminal>su to root>chkconfig alsa off>reboot does it work? If not someone that actually uses that card will need to tell you what to have in modules.conf. I have a sb 16 pci. Or, you could google for how to use the oss driver. jdion81
I thought that there was an issue with the SB Live card that come with the Dells. Something about the fact that the cards are actually not 100% SB Live cards (they use a different chipset). Or was this only with the audigy cards?
