Hey, my windoze drive got a virus. So I got problems...luckly it's the same comp as my mandrake hard drive, so I can still access the files. My question is, is there any way to scan windoze for viruses from linux? I tried housecall.antivirus.com, but it kept saying I needed JAVA...even after I installed it 3 times :P

any ideas?

I use clamav, I believe it's available as an rpm in the contrib section. However, I usually install it by downloading direct from their site. http://www.clamav.net/ There's a pdf file explaining how to install and autodownload the updates. This will enable you to scan your drive and find the infected file. If you are using FAT for your windows drive you will then be able to delete the offending files. If your using NTFS, you've got a problem as this is read only under Linux.

I think pclinuxos includes fprot command line antivirus by default. Just run it from your cdrom and scan your hd, if you can handle command line stuff that is.

Anyway, I found out that Norton is next to useless in detecting current worms and trojans since the command to execute them is usually put into the registry, where even norton don't touch. If you really think you have that kind of worms, you better download all the available trojan/worm removers available at norton's page and run them all. Better be safe than sorry.

Then again.. maybe your windows is just plain corrupted. I found out that after time, the registry and files and stuffs in windows become more and more bloated, making it slower and less stable. Clean installing windows every few months usually solve this problem.

From within Windows you can install a free application called "Spybot Search & Destroy" that remove spyware, keyloggers and trojans.

It also offers a nice feature called "immunize" that patches some Windows Explorer security holes and blocks spyware and non-wanted pop-up windows.

escan

Amazing peice of anti-virus technology. Its based on Kaspersky Labs AVP, but offers some serious enhancements. I had it running at the school I used to work at, and actually watched as Blaster came down the feed from the county council, and escan picked it up and threw it out. Within Powys, I believe that my school was the only one that did NOT get hit by blaster... purely due to this piece of software - everyone else was running Norton, Sophus etc...

If your going to do anything in windows, this is the one I'd recomend to protect your pc with. It also includes firewall technology now...

I am, unfortunately, a technical consultant for mostly Microsoft products. I myself use Mandrake 9.2 for daily work. On my Mandrake laptop I run a program called F-Prot www.f-prot.com. Many times my Windows users get viruses that they ask me to get rid of for them. I mount their harddrives (hidden admin shares) and then scan them with f-prot from my linux laptop. Best part is I do not get infested myself.

I've been using escan for 6 months now and I am happy with the results. It doesn't consume so much system resources and the daily updates are pretty fast. One of the things to point is that it doesn't have the anti-spyware, anti-dialer and anti-joke features yet. That it's real-time mail scan feature requires some work to make it work right dealing with lots of complicate configurations because activating it using the out-of-the-box presets will make almost all of your e-mails go to the quarantine zone. I have the webpage scanning disabled as it stops me from loading some pages stating that fall in the porn or gambling category when they are not! :o

As an anti-virus scanner is a very good piece of software but fails to desinfect some viruses (the "Terrosist virus" for example) and just gives the chance to delete the file. When that happens I open my Panda Antivirus and clean the file :D

Panda is OK but takes a little while to load and slows the PC down.

Anyway you can try both for 30 days and decide.
