ATI cards

Hallo Everyone.

I'm glad to see this forum is quite alive.... :)

There is just one little problem with my 10.0 CE, and it is the Radeon IGP 340 in my notebook.

Can someone help me how to force this nice little guy to show me some 3D acceleration? Unfortunately ATI doesn't provide drivers for their IGP cards. :-(

This one is fully Radeon 7000 compatible, if I'm right, and I know that there are patches and workarounds to make it work, the bad point is I started with linux more seriously with Mandrake 9.1, so I don't have much experience in compiling kernels etc...

If anyone of you could help, it would be more than welcome.

Thanks,

Peter.

I just changed my Radeon 8500 for an Nvidia 5900XT and I am so HAPPY that I wonder why I didn't move to nVidia before :

- TVOUT works

- Winex works

- Games like Savage or NWN works

- several settings can be changed through environment variables (no need to edit the configuration file + restart X)

- performance is much better (this is not the same generation of hardware though)

In the past 2 years, I have been spending a lot of time trying various DRI releases + all the beta & non-beta firegl & ati drivers. With nVidia, I will hopefully spend more time doing productive tasks (i.e. fragging ....)

Hmm... I only use the ATI 9600 All-In-Wonder pro, but if you run fglrxconfig to create your config file, then TVout works :D WineX also works, although I haven't been able to get Aces High or Flight Simulator to work on it :( As for the changes in config, I've found it better to set it and let it be.(Last time I tried changing something, i had to reinstall MDK :wall: ) The performance is something that you could never compare an older one with a newer one, because there is just too greate a difference between models. :P

I also have an ATI IGP in my laptop. And, I'm assuming the 3D accel isn't working as TuxRacer runs about 3sec per 1 frame. Any suggestions to get this to work. The biggest letdown is I can't get acceptable DVD playback framerates without a proper driver.

I had a pair of NVidia cards before. A GF2 MX and than an MX440, and had no problem getting 3D Acceleration working with Mandrake and RedHat. Now I have an ATI 9100 and could not get 3D Acceleration up and running with Mandrake 10. I think I will get a NVidia 5700LE next.

May i try to simplify things for the original poster? (just my opinion)

ATI makes great graphics cards and has done for a great many years (nuff said).

Nvidia Makes great graphics cards (nuff said).

now some people who have posted here have trouble with ATI, and some people have trouble with Nvidia (so who's the best?)

answer = neither

each has good and bad posts, so the only thing to do is check out the reviews and plump for one or the other and get used to its foibles (quirks).

and i guarantee some will say you should have got the other card "because".

personally i run an old ati all in wonder pro 32mb and it works just fine for me, but then i'm not a die hard gamer (mind you it does run broken sword 3 the sleeping dragon (in windoze) perfectly and according to the specs the game requires at least a geforce2 64mb !!! and recomends a geforce4 ti 4200 !! ahhhh my poor old ati is working so hard and so well after all these years.

Oh my 9100 runs great in Winodows too... it is Linux it has problems with.

I use an ATI Radeon 9200 on my main machine and it works like a beut in both windows and linux (md10 Oe). The only problem I have is that sometimes I have to wiggle the mouse while linux is booting otherwiese my screen goes blank, but frankly thats not enough for me to use anything else. On another computer in my house there is a Ge-force 4 something and it works great but I'll always prefer ATI because it gives you more bang for your buck.

ral,

in answer to your post, i was merely trying to say that my ati card is an old model, (well passed its use by date) and yet still plays up to the minute games quite well.

the game's spec's call for a geforce2 64mb minimum !!!

and a geforce4 ti 4200 recomended!!!

and there is my little 5 year old ati 32mb 128rage pro all in wonder running the game with no problems at all.

32mb of memory down on minimum spec.

now to me it doesn't matter if the game concerned was a windoze game or a linux game, i'm just trying to say that the card was quality kit, and a damn good buy at the time.

as someone else said "a lot of bang for the buck".

and they last well.

and i dare say there are those who could say the same about nvidia cards too.

:D

I had an ATI 9000 Pro Readon card, trying to set it up drove to the point, and I bought a Nvidia 5600 FX Ultra and I am happy I did

ha! I have the same card. Took me some 8 hours, but I got it working (3D acceleration).

though when I buy a new video card I will consider Nvidia as an option (a good option) (I'm an ATI fan but their linux support is just ridiculous)

took a bit of madness , trial and error and daring config editing to get my Radeon work

I have an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro, and am getting good results just using the supplied DRI drivers in Mdk 10OE.

Admittedly, I am not a hard-core gamer, but I am getting great frame rates with fglxgears, and am quite happily running Cedega for my Win games.

$ glxgears

8037 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1607.400 FPS

8603 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1720.600 FPS

8601 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1720.200 FPS

8603 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1720.600 FPS

8601 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1720.200 FPS

8602 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1720.400 FPS

8600 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1720.000 FPS

This is in the default-size window when run.
