Hi all

did any of you people have any success with installation of the 330?

Using mdk9.2 I did 'urpmi speedtouch' and installation including the CD install of mgmt.o file appeared to go well (in fact, it went so well I was pleasantly suprised as I've read so much about this particular modem and the associated install problems). However, when I go into drakconnect, though the two lights on the modem are green, I'm not getting a connection.

I've tried it with and without the ethernet card installed (once the internet connection is sorted, i want to network to another 1 or 2 PCs); I've had the firewall not set and then set. After using auto detect on the wizard, I then went back and entered the info manually - still nothing.

Newbie frustration, but I desperately need to get this licked.

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that MANDRAKE is at fault here.

I too have tried to get an Alcatel Speedtouch USB Modem working for 2 weeks now.

(see my, plus others, posts on this subject)

MANDRAKE is screwing things up in the USB area somehow and we are all led to believe that it is we who are doing somethihg wrong.

On other websites forums I don't see anyone having any massive troubles with other Linux OSs or troubles of any significance involving ADSL USB Modems. Only with Mandrake.

Nearly everyone seems to get to the same stage as I do, namely install seems to go OK but still does not connect.

Considering that Mandrake has the deserved reputation for the best hardware detection and setting up OS, this is a cronic disappointment.

It should be investigated and resolved immediately. Yet I also sort of get the impression that they do not really care about this issue because they really don't want to encourage BroardBand downloading as they see it as taking away from their packaged sales, despite the fact that many people like myself still prefer to buy the manufactured cd sets.

I still had the same problem whether shorewall was installed or not and whether the firewall was activated or not so the problem does not seem likely to be in that area.

I am also starting to wonder if the Australian suppliers to Telstra Bigpond have nobbled (at Telstras instructions on behalf of Microsoft) the modems to make them unworkable in LINUX. Since they are supplied as part of the ADSL deal and Telstra say the do not support LINUX then they could legally get away with it.

I am currently here from my W2K os and using the latest Mozilla but have not been able to get Mozilla Mail working so I am stuck with that inept piece of bastardry called Outlook Express.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm suffering similar problems with 10.0.

The only google result I could find of any potential help was to add "-e 1" to the "/etc/ppp/peers/adsl" file, so it looks something like this:

pty "/usr/local/sbin/pppoa3 -e 1 -vpi 8 -vci 35 -c"

I don't personally know if this works or not, as I have spent enough time (for the moment at least) installing 10.0, having no internet connection working, and restoring 9.2 and getting it all back the way I like it.

Hope this helps someone, if you do try it please post your results!

By the way, a link that you may find useful in the future...

Speedtouch Conf

This has a shell-script file that sets up everything you should need to get the Speedtouch modem working. This worked a lot better for me than Mandrake's setup ever did, but doesn't work for 10.0!

So it would seem that my conclusion about this being a Mandrake stuff up is proving correct.

Earlier the problem was being blamed on the 2.6 kernel but other posters like myself have tried the 2.4 kernels and it still won't work. I can hardly wait to get my hands on the new Official Mandrake 10 set on the 10 th of this month to see if Mandrake has fixed the problem but I am not holding my breath, especially since there is no word about it from anyone at Mandrake.

I haven't tried it with Mandrake 9.2 yet but I think I will reinstall it on my playaround partition group where I currently have a 2nd Mandrake 10CE installed because it seems that many have got SpeedTouch to work there.

To put it mildly, I am always bloody on edge working the internet with Windows 2000 even though I am using Mozilla and am constantly (every 2 or 3 days) updating my Anti-Virus and Anti-SpyWare.

However I will keep on trying ALL and EVERYTHING that anyone suggests so as that well used expression says "keep those suggestions coming in folks" .

At this point I must make a public expression of thanks and gratitude to STEVIEAG in the UK for his generousity and work in compiling a mass of packages and helpful hints he sent to me here in Australia in the hope that one, some or all might help. Unfortunately it didn't help but that does not take off any of the shine on his Star.

Thank you sincerely, Stevieag. You are a champion.

Cheers. John

on the contrary, I have used the speedtouch USB on Mandrake 10 CE with no problem. I am sorry to have missed this thread as I was busy recently, but if anyone PMs me the details of his/her problem I'll do my best to help.

My setup: kernel 2.6.3-7mdk

VIA USB controller (this is probably irrelevant)

and the "green frog"/stingray Alcatel speedtouch USB :)

other versions still use the same firmware, i believe.

there's no nice GUI frontend for this thing unfortunately, I only recommend this to those who are not afraid of command-line.

modprobe.conf (RELEVANT LINES ONLY, you will have additional lines)

alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
alias tty-ldisc-13 n_hdlc
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias speedtch off
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias tty-ldisc-14 ppp_synctty
alias char-major-108-* ppp_generic

/etc/ppp/options:

lock
noipdefault
persist
noauth
usepeerdns
defaultroute

/etc/ppp/pap-secrets

# Secrets for authentication using PAP
# client	server	secret  	IP addresses

'username' * 'password' *

/etc/ppp/peers/adsl

noauth
noipdefault

#these are MY vpi and vci numbers, use your own ISP's numbers =)
pty "/usr/sbin/pppoa3 -e 1 -c -vpi 0 -vci 100"

sync
noaccomp
kdebug 1
nopcomp
noccp
novj
holdoff 4
maxfail 25
persist
usepeerdns
defaultroute
user "username"

Mandrake Firewall: DISABLED

Merely installing the speedtouch rpm and running the internet wizard gives me all of these configuration files, I did not write them from scratch. I just edited them for the VPI and VCI numbers. Just select "skip" when asked for the firmware, and "do not start connection at boot", and don't bother attempting to connect right away.

Now, to connect, I run this script(as root), which is the same as typing these commands one by one(except fot the first line):

#!/bin/bash
modem_run -m -f /path/to/alcaudsl.sys
pppd call adsl
sleep 4
ifconfig
iptables -A INPUT -i ppp0 -p tcp --syn -j DROP

now be sure to change /path/to/alcaudsl.sys appropriately. the 5th line should print out the ifconfig, if there's a ppp0, then you're connected. The last line is my firewall. Rather rudimentary, but it suits me fine for now. I'll try to improve the script when I have the time, for SSH and stuff. Suggestions for other improvements are welcome.

ps. you can start the connection at boot by running this script at boot, using .xinitrc or that nice gnome starter or something. there are many choices so I guess I'll just write a HOWTO for only one method.

for those who want to install packages manually here are the ones that I THINK are needed (the mandrake wizard installed these packages automatically for me)

pppoa or pppoatm

pppd

speedtouch-1.2

ppp

iptables

and these should have their corresponding dependencies, but those should be taken care of by RPMdrake or urpmi.

Thank you ARTHUR.

I will be trying this out in the next 24hrs and will continue to track your help details.

I might start to make some headway at last. Well I hope so and hope reigns supreme.

Cheers. John.

Well Arthur I gave your suggestion a try and here is the results from Konsole:-

[root@localhost root]# !/bin/bash

bash: !/bin/bash: event not found

[root@localhost root]# modem_run -m -f /zzz/alcaudsl.sys

[root@localhost root]# pppd call adsl

[root@localhost root]# sleep 4

[root@localhost root]# ifconfig

lo Link encap:Local Loopback

inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0

inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host

UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

RX packets:338 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

TX packets:338 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

RX bytes:23804 (23.2 Kb) TX bytes:23804 (23.2 Kb)

[root@localhost root]# iptables -A INPUT -i ppp0 -p tcp --syn -j DROP

[root@localhost root]#

The first event was the killer , where it said "event not found".

Should there have been a space between the exclamation mark ! and the / or just as I had it???

I checked that every programme you recommended was actually installed, and it was. I should point out that that I was (am) using the default 2.6.3- (I think it is 4)kernel that comes with Mandrake 10 CE.

By the way does anyone know what the kernel version number is?? Is it 5 ??

Would it possibly make a difference here???

I'll keep trying all your suggestions till this problem is licked.

Thanks EVERYONE. John

4.10 PM here.

my method seems difficult for some...I'm going out to test if this is possible with Kppp, so you would need only the VPI and VCI numbers.

AussieJohn, I sent a PM on additional things you could do.

Summary:

Step 1: install speedtouch rpm

Step 2: run MCC - internet connection wizard ->select skip firmware loading, don't connect at boot

Step 3: edit /etc/ppp/peers/adsl (to match what I posted above)

Step 4: type commands to connect -

>modem_run -m -f /path/to/alcaudsl.sys

>pppd call adsl

after this you should be connected.

Another solution is to buy an ethernet modem. :cheesy:

I do notice that under usbcore, that speedtouch is shown as "speedtch", and as I understand it, this is an error in Mandrake 10 but where I found "speedtch" and changed it to "speedtouch" it didn't make any difference so there must be some key places where the incorrect spelling is used and has to be rooted out. I see that "speedtch"appears in a number of times in this printout

As you can see there was no connect errors.

No. The leds did not cycle through their routine. They stayed a steady green fom Windows right through into Mandrake with only the USB led going off for a few seconds during the rebooting process.

I hope this info is helpful. You are certainly working hard on this one and it is greatly appreciated. Cheers good mate. John

No, the module is really called speedtch, it's not an error. Put "alias speedtch off" in /etc/modprobe.conf. The speedtch module should NOT be there unless you use kernel mode (which hasn't worked for me).

I'll write a more newbie-friendly HOWTO when I have the time. i'm a bit busy nowadays. HTH :)

Good. Now put this in /etc/modprobe.conf:

alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
alias tty-ldisc-13 n_hdlc
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias tty-ldisc-14 ppp_synctty
alias char-major-108-* ppp_generic

Have you edited /etc/ppp/peers/adsl ? Refer to my post last sunday on how it should look like. Change these things:

1. VPI and VCI numbers (you can get it from windows, or ask your ISP)

2. username
