Help a noobie with Nvidia

Okay, help a clueless Linux newbie here.

I've been through all this. I got the "good" kernel source above. I had to set the IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH to make it work (and that's worrisome in itself). It said it installed. I ran it. It said my graphics card power cable was unplugged--which makes me wonder how I can see the text on the screen that says the graphics card power cable is unplugged, but that's another issue. It said to set a flag in my XF86Config (not XF86Config-4, but when it didn't work in just the one it said I set it in both and tried again) to prevent it from checking that power cable.

This is what's in my log now:

Greetings. I split this into its own topic because, even though it may be related, seperate problems should have their own headings, both for solutions and searches in the future.

Would you please tell us more about your hardware? And what version of Mandrake?

Some general information: the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file is the only relevant file. Don't worry about the /etc/X11/XF86Config file.

I have used switches only under circumstances where the driver has not been adapted to some new change in Mandrake. Since the current driver from Nvidia came out after 9.2, I am concerned about using switches. You may be masking an altogether different problem!

I'm using an Asus A7NX8-VM motherboared with an AMD 1.6 GHz CPU. My graphics card is a FeForce 4 (It's a GeForce Asylum, specifically, if that makes a difference).

I'm using Mandrake 9.2. Here's the rub: It was working fine under 9.1. I played Enemy Territory, Jedi Outcast, the works, no problem (even got some actual work done from time to time). I upgraded to 9.2, and the first time it booted to X (or tried to) the screen filled with funky ASCII characters and then locked up. I was forced to do a hard reboot, then it yelled at me for not shutting down cleanly.

So I booted to safe mode and edited my XF86onfig-4 to change "nvidia" to "nv" and then X started, only without the real drivers obviously.

So I got the latest Nvidia drivers, and they wouldn't boot at all. I searched various forums until I found the one on here recommending getting the 4496 version instead of the latest and installing the "good" kernel source, which I did. I ran the .run to install the 4496 driver, and it complained about the kernel not being compiled with the same compiler. :wall: So I set the IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=1 and tried again. Changing "nv" back to "nvidia" again in the config file I bravely rebooted and got the error log I posted above.

I'm getting ready to reinstall 9.1, but that would be a huge pain, so if I can solve this without having to do a complete rollback that would be super.

Hi guys

I know nothing about external power connector .. but what about setting the variable "NoPowerConnectorCheck" to "0" in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and startx thereafter?

.. my 2 cents

reinstall won't help. It has nothing to do with your prob. You must use the XF86Config-4 file. If your XF86Config-4 looks like the above XF86Config file, it's all wrong and a non-XFdrake generated file.

Have you ran

XFdrake

or

drakconf

?

In the above XF86Config there's no driver in the Device Section....it's in the Screen Section which is wrong. Which is the reason for

(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

It couldn't find a driver.

I'm a little confused here, but I did run XFDrake, and it still didn't work.

When you say "In the above XF86Config there's no driver in the Device Section....it's in the Screen Section which is wrong," do you mean XF86Config-4 or just XF86Config? If just XF86Config, I should move the line Driver "svga" to the "Device" section? I'll try that and post again.

Okay, I moved the line about the driver in the config file from the screen to the device section, and still got the same result--no usable screens found.

On the plus side, I waited to do a reinstall until I got some advice here, and as a result I avoided wasting a lot of time on something that would not have helped. :D

Here's my XF86Config-4 right now (since runnig XFdrake and trying again):

I'm already running at 800x600, so I don't know how it could.

Okay, turns out I'm running 2.4.21-0.13mdksecure. (At what point did I make this decision?) So how do I get the kernel source for this? It really should have been installed when I installed Mandrake, shouldn't it?

No, for reasons unknown to mankind the kernel sources do not install by default in Mandrake. If you install the correct kernel and matching kernel sources, your nvidia problem is solved!

Make a directory in your /home called "newkernel". (or cat or tree or whatever you want! B) )

Go here and download kernel-2.4.22.21mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm and kernel-source-2.4.22.21mdk.i586.rpm into the new directory.

Open a terminal, navigate to the new directory, su to root, and type "urpmi kernel*.rpm"

After it is done installing, there will be a new entry in your /etc/lilo.conf file. Check and see that it is there. When you re-boot, you will have a new choice for kernels, says something like 2.4.22-21mdk, or something similar. Boot with the new kernel. After start up, (and it actually starts up!) open a terminal. su to root, and type "init 3".

Log in as root, and run your Nvidia installer, no switches. It should go fine. Navigate to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, edit the "nv" line to "nvidia", save, and back at the prompt type "init 5".

You should see the Nvidia logo and be in X. If all this works, we can then clean up the /etc/lilo.conf file and have the computer boot default to the new kernel.

No dice.

Well, some dice. I got the kernel packages you said to use and installed them. I rebooted with that kernel, and as you predicted I was able to run the NVidia driver install without any switches. That's a huge step in the right direction. I ran XFdrake, then tried to startx.

I get the same error messages, though: Graphics card is unplugged (yet mysteriously works anyway!), and no usable screens found. Here is my XF86Config-4:
