RT2870 wireless, what's going on in dmesg?

Recently I purchased two new USB wireless adapters. The first one is just as I received it, no firmware update. When connected to a USB port I see the following in the dmesg buffer:

usb 2-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3

usb 2-3: New USB device found, idVendor=148f, idProduct=2070

usb 2-3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3

usb 2-3: Product: 802.11 n WLAN

usb 2-3: Manufacturer: Ralink

usb 2-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'minstrel'

Registered led device: rt2800usb-phy0::radio

Registered led device: rt2800usb-phy0::assoc

Registered led device: rt2800usb-phy0::quality

udev: renamed network interface wlan0 to wlan1

The second adapter originally caused dmesg output as above, but was then used under Windows with the latest Ralink driver and seems to have a firmware update, although that software never told me it was doing a firmware update. Consequently the dmesg output for the second one now shows as below, with the last two lines repeating perpetually until I remove that wireless adapter from the USB port.

usb 2-1.2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4

usb 2-1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=148f, idProduct=2070

usb 2-1.2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3

usb 2-1.2: Product: 802.11 n WLAN

usb 2-1.2: Manufacturer: Ralink

usb 2-1.2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

phy1: Selected rate control algorithm 'minstrel'

Registered led device: rt2800usb-phy1::radio

Registered led device: rt2800usb-phy1::assoc

Registered led device: rt2800usb-phy1::quality

rt2800usb 2-1.2:1.0: firmware: requesting rt2870.bin

phy1 -> rt2x00lib_request_firmware: Error - Failed to request Firmware.

rt2800usb 2-1.2:1.0: firmware: requesting rt2870.bin

phy1 -> rt2x00lib_request_firmware: Error - Failed to request Firmware.

What's going on here? How can I make one or both of these wireless adapters work in Mandriva Linux?
