humaneasy
Hi guys! I'm preparing an ATX machine to work with MDK and Games and after it goes to the press so they can test it and hopefully make a review on it. It was a challenge made by a friend for us (me and the linux community) to show that a regular (sort of) PC with Mandrake Linux could compete with regular PC with MS Windows XP in the games front. It is not needed to offer ALL MSWinXP's panoplia of software, but only one or two of each that really work Hope we win  I need some links to software (if possible some heavy 3D FPS and free) to install and test. And of course some hints on how to make them work extra-fine  Machine configuration: Mainboard FIC P4M-800T, Socket 478, VIA PT800 2,8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 w/ HT Tech., FSB800 256MB DDRAM PC400 120 GB Seagate Barracuda HDD Teac DVD/CD-RW Combo Radeon 9200V 128MB DDR SDRAM AGP 4x RiserCard V1020 SAT Tuner Card Ports 4x USB 2.0, 2x IEEE 1394 Firewire, 6 ch. audio, SPDIF out 10/100 Base-T Ethernet, serial, parallel, mouse and kb Mandrake 9.2 Discovery All is much appreciated :) Thank you all in advance for your kind cooperation. 1[], B) Lopo
Michel
Ok, I didn't played all this game ... but mostly when I encounter something nice, I bookmark it: Dont forget top look at linux game tome some tips on games: (All the games are free or gpl or something) * Parsec : It's only playable on a lan. If there are bots (don't know anymore) you could do a 1 player game ... I read some people played over the internet by setting up a VPN, so that it looks liek they are on the same lan. Maybe you can play on the internet now ..don't know. There is activity .. look at the sourceforge-list. * I just found this ( a great collection of software: linux.org ): Torcs: Torcs * flightgear: flightsimulator ... don't forget to install the extra maps. I heard it's not easy at all. * Armagettron: enable all options and don't forget to install the extra's: extras * didn't tried it liek many games :), btu here it is (online roleplaying): Mistland * I play bzflag a lot. Graphically not the prettiest, but I like it: bzflag * Alteria * racer You can extend this game: see the 3rd-party-section of their page * Maybe they want to have also more of a thinking game???: 3d-chess: chess Ok, I have some others, buth don't know if you're interested .. they're not really 3d-intensive .. I mentionned some of them here too :). Hops this helps some. Edited January 11, 2004 by Michel

ShadowFoxLSU
I hate to say something negative, but you need to change the Video card on the game machine. ATI drivers are hit an miss, and when I ran ET in MDK 9.2(I have an ATI 9000 Pro 128) it caused the whole system to crash....

GodFlesh
For a P4, i would not choose a via chipset but an intel. Ati 3d drivers are far behind nvidia. Chose an nvidia card for linux. You need 512M of ram.
Tuxiscool
You should also make sure that you have the latest version of Mesa installed from http://www.mesa3d.org/, if it has been updated since 9.2....
