Sal
Just installed a D-Link DI-604 broadband router to route my dsl connection to 2 computers. After a little fiddleing I got everything working OK, here's my question. When my dsl was hooked up directly to my ethernet card I used to shut down the port with the command "adsl-stop" and open it with "adsl-start" as root. I would like to be able to do the same thing now that I'm useing a router. What would be the correct commands? Thanks, Sal
johnnyv
turn off the power switch to the router :P My router is always on, it connects to the isp automatically. i just turn it off when im not using it. I could disconnect it by using its web interface but why bother when the on/off switch is so much quicker.
DragonMage
Try shutting down the eth0 (or whatever it is you are using). But it is a bit hard to do.. playing with ifconfig and all Maybe service network stop would do the same thing? Sorry.. I am sick this week, so my brain is not functioning correctly, but whatever it is, should be done easily using mandrake control center. Sal
Got it! "service network stop" takes down the network card "service network start" brings it up again. Funny I never heard this issue discussed before? Am I the only one worried about leaving my computer open to intrusion 24/7? Thanks, Sal
paul
hey Sal, you could also use ifdown eth0 ifup eth0 No you're not thne only one concerned about security. Most of us run a router with pinholes (closed) which is probably what Jonnyv has, or some kind of software firewall. I use Mandrake Security Single Network Firewall, and haven't had any problems yet
Sal
Wow, just found out an interesting thing, either command "service network stop" or ifdown eth0" shuts down printing from Cups? Bummer! Anyone got any other ideas on how to close my internet connection without killing Cups? Thanks, Sal
