  1. i got rid of everything by rpm -e dkms-nvidia, as well as dkms, nvidia, and nvidia-kernel. i installed the nvidia package without a problem, but glx gears still seems choppy (seems to stop and start), and not very quick (around 1800 fps, with a geforce fx 5200). is that abnormal? derxen
  2. hello all, i have been having trouble with dkms-nvidia on le2005 (it accelerates my geforce fx, but it's rather choppy and generally unimpressive), so i want to try out nvidia's own 7667 package. what's the best way to uninstall dkms-nvidia completely? i've tried before, and i think the kernel module got left behind, leading to even worse trouble. derxen
  3. That should be 'queue'. I knew it looked funny. Anyway, I reinstalled the original packages, and printing has been restored. A bug in the bugfix, it seems. derxen
  4. Does anyone know for instance of a way to check why the files won't reach the queu? Some way to switch on debugging for OOo? derxen
  5. Hello I can't print from openoffice anymore. I had no problem with it until I installed the updated packages, but I'm not sure that is the cause. This is on LE2005. I can print from other apps like Firefox, and I can print a test page from spadmin as root, but not as normal user. The jobs just don't show up in the CUPS spool. I have no idea where they go instead. Starting OOo from a terminal does not give any messages. I've tried reinstalling the printer in MCC, but no luck. Can anyone give me a clue? derxen
  6. It works fine for me. derxen
  7. It works like a charm now. Tomorrow i'll try the wireless on the laptop. Only thing that I need to fix is that my settings are gone now that I have a new hostname. But being back online is like coming in from the cold. derxen
  8. Finally checked the cables again, pushed them a bit, and got the lights on. Sorry about the anticlimax. Thanks for all your help, it was the bit about the lights that did it in the end, but I learnt a lot along the way. derxen
  9. It's difficult posting output, because I'm writingt this from a laptop that's still connected to the net via another modem. Everything is messed up now, after I tried to set things up via drakconnect: I'm not at localhost anymore, but at 127.0.0.1, and eth0 is gone. eth0 came up well before that. Running dhclient gave a negative too, únknown hardware address type 776', and 'no dhcp offers received. The light is not blinking, and there are no other machines on the network. I'm stumped. derxen
  10. Yes, the PC is patched to one of the four ethernet ports. Do I need ppp installed, btw? I'll redo the settings, and let you know what happens. I'm using le2005. derxen
  11. There is a tiny light on the ethernet card, but not on the port of the router. Where do I set the default gateway? I haven't set the dns yet, because the modem/router is supposed to do that, once I can connect to it. And the hosts are the same as yours, except wins. I also tried pinging, and I got response from the ethernet card, but not from the router. Also (I hang my head in shame) I put the right cable in between the card and the router (I'd been using a phojne cable), but alas that didn't solve it either. I really appreciate your help btw, thanks. derxen
  12. I changed eth0 to the values you advise, but I still can't see the router. More precisely, i set it to these values: DEVICE=eth0 BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=192.168.1.2 # or whatever your IP address is to be - see above NETMASK=255.255.255.0 # or 255.0.0.0 if your IP address is 10.x.x.x NETWORK=192.168.1.0 # or 10.0.0.0 if your IP address is 10.x.x.x or 192.168.2.0 if your IP address is 192.168.2.x BROADCAST=192.168.1.255 # or 10.255.255.255 if your IP address is 10.x.x.x or 192.168.2.255 if your IP address is 192.168.2.x ONBOOT=yes MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes taken from streeter's howto. But still no luck. derxen
  13. I wasn't able to connect at all, and I had the correct adress (192.168.1.1) Could it be that my eth0 is not correctly configured? derxen
  14. Hello all, I just bought a linksys 54g wireless modem/router, but i can't set it up. I was stupid and tried the wizards, but that didn't work of course. The situation now is: 1) can't connect to the modem; this should be done with a web browser, but the connection is refused. 2) eth0 is 10.0.0.1, netmask 255.255.255.0 Does anyone have any ideas? derxen
  15. What if you open up thunderbird, then start another instance? That should bring up the profile manager, right? derxen
  16. Thanks bvc, it worked. First I tried via gnome-default-applications-properties, but that refuses to accept any changes for some reason. Gconf-editor worked. derxen
  17. Hello all, I've switched from gnome to xfce, and I love it. I can recommend it to anyone who likes Gnome, but wants something leaner and quicker. The only thing I can't figure out is how to set default applications for xfce. For example, how do I make sure that firefox is opened when I click on a link in thunderbird? derxen
  18. What suprises me is that it is so easy with the speedtch.conf script, yet mandrake is taking so long to get it to work. But maybe that is because of the different models. And yes, I'ld rather leave it alone now that it works, unless I am sure that mandrake's rpm really does the job. I've spent many, many hours trying to get it to work, under 9.1, 9.2 and 10.1. I've succeeded every time, but it was no fun. derxen
  19. I was wondering if anyone had tried the new speedtouch rpm of 10.1 official. Does it work now with the 330? I set up mine with the speedtch.conf (see this thread: http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=16970&hl= ) and it works, but I might consider doing it the mandrake way, if that way actually leads somewhere. derxen

  21. Not sure this is the right forum, but here goes: At work I have to submit to the whims of a computer running the Evil Empire's OS. It's hooked up to a LAN served by a Novell server. I rarely use any of the programs (I have mozilla and OOo on my harddisk), but I do use my partition on the network drive for backups, and of course the internet connection and one of the network printers. So I wondered whether I could get around windows altogether by using a bootable cdrom distro like knoppix or gnoppix. Would I still be able to use network services? And if it is possble, is it perhaps more hassle than is worth it? In your answer, please assume I know sod all about networking (as you might have guessed). derxen
  22. But I checked when I first heard about this problem, and the 8521B had already been mentioned as okay to the thread over at the Club. Anyway, I am glad it still works. But it will be my last LG. derxen
  23. That's odd, I have an 8521B and it was not fried by installing 9.2. derxen
  24. I agree with bvc, and I think it sums up what makes the Club a somewhat paradoxical thing. You pay and get some benefits, but you're also used as a lab rat (or test bunny, as we say here). If you just see the Club from a consumer viewpoint, it looks odd, and you get annoyed over bugs in what looks like and is called a final release. But the proper way to see it I think is as the kind of club where you all get together, share the fun, and all pitch in to keep it alive. derxen
  25. Is the 8521B on the list yet? Mine is NOT fried after 9.2 install. derxen
