  1. Hello all, I have purchased two pci wifi cards by Motorola, model WPCI810G. I also purchased a pcmcia WN825G. The problem with pcmcia was my own fault by not remembering my TP 600E only supports 16-bit, and this card is 32-bit. However, my problem with the pci cards is much worse. I first attempted to put this card into my little compaq deskpro which I have configured as a OpenBSD router/gateway/firewall. The machine simply won't even POST with the card installed. So, I moved to my MDK 9.1 server. It booted fine, but in MCC, it finds a "ETHERNET DEVICE" but cannot seem to identify it any further. Does anybody know if this card simply doesn't work with linux yet? Is anybody familiar with a place to check on wifi card compatability? Most sites I have found aren't that good.
  2. ok, that phone is the way of the dinosaur in my life, and I have moved on to a Samsung x427. It also does not have bluetooth, but I have purchased an off brand usb data cable for significantly cheaper. Can anybody tell me what I can use to see it's filesystem? "dmesg" finds the cable itself, but nothing additionally when I attach the phone. I would prefer to just "mount -t msdos /dev/phone /phone" or something like that.
  3. Thanks a lot for that info. I will have to check into it all. I definitely like the idea of controlling xmms with the phone. I haven't noticed bluetooth mentioned about my phone, but I wouldn't doubt it's on there, just haven't read over it really well yet.
  4. Hey all, I may be the last computer geek who finally got a mobile phone. I am wondering what everybody uses to synch and upload files to mobile phones in *nix and hopefully anybody's specific knowledge of success with the T226. *** moved from software by phunni
  5. Ok, First, I'm not at the machine, so I can't plug it in to see if this works, but I attempted to add the following modules which you listed and weren't loaded on mine.. usb-interface ehci-hcd usb-ohci Now, the usb-interface didn't exist apparently, and the other two errored with the following: Using /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/drivers/usb/hcd/ehci-hcd.o.gz /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/drivers/usb/hcd/ehci-hcd.o.gz: init_module: No such device Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg Of course, usb-ohci had it's own file mentioned, but other than that was identical. As far as fstab I am pretty sure nothing needs to be there for it to recognize the camera from a module standpoint, just to use it for mounting after it is already recognized. In fact, I know I am using the same /etc/fstab file copied from the old install which worked on the new machine.. amazingly enough I had the piece of mind to do full backup before scrapping it.
  6. I would be fine with that idea, but why then did it work with my last install of the OS with the exact same media even? I'm not all fired up to "upgrade" to 10. I've never been a big one for "bleeding edge" on my desktops. I kicked and screamed all the way before jumping from win 95 to win 98!! :)
  7. Hello all, I know I have already read a ton of posts on this topic, but still I cannot get my machine to even detect my camera. However, this very machine used to load the camera no problem with nothing special done to it by me but to plug the camera in and turn it on. This was prior to a reinstallation of the exact same 9.0 OS. I have added scsi_mod [usb-storage ....] i.e. Mass storage (/var/log/messages verifies this fact) and lsmod reports I already had usbcore usb-uhci ide-scsi as well as usb-storage all loaded. Still, when I turn the camera on, it detects it is connected via usb, but the computer doesn't even give the slightest hint it is connected (i.e. tail -n 50 /var/log/syslog). .. and yes, this is enough to see the past several seconds. It shows the addition of the Mass Storage module being added. Anybody have any other ideas? I've also done a "gphoto2 --auto-detect and usbview which didn't surprise me they didn't find anything since dmesg or /var/log/syslog should show it first.
  8. Yeah, I'm sorry. Sometimes I take it for granted that everybody knows I don't really use gui tools. Likely the command LinNeighbourhood is using is "/sbin/mount.smbfs" and not mount. One of the many reasons I don't like letting pretty graphical tools keeping me from knowing what I am trying to do. Big reason I left M$. Aside from that, does anybody have any ideas about my problem? I'm sure those who do know that the only way to really fix it will be cli, so I won't bother to specify that.
  9. Hello all: Once again I've decided workarounds aren't good enough. Here is the scenario. I host the majority of my files on a MD 9.1 server distributed to my network via Samba 2.2.8. (I had the same problem in 2.2.7) I log in to my MD 9.1 workstation using YP/NIS. (I know it is using that since this user does not exist locally on the workstation). For all intensive purposes my UID/GID are the same. On my workstation I /sbin/mount.smbfs the share (since only root can mount!!). This user is the owner of all files and directories involved on the server, yet when I attempt to alter a file with any number of programs I am unable to. This has nothing to do with chmod as even a member of the group would have write priviliges to the folders/files. The only thing I think of now as I type this is perhaps a Samba option I have overlooked. Anybody with any help will be greatly appeciated.
  10. Read more closely.. LOWID was fixed moving from xMule to aMule I am VERY familiar with networking, and it wasn't anything simple like forwarded ports. I even went to the point of making sure that even though I had "forwarded the ports" to make sure that they were indeed forwarded by running a couple of other applications across them. Anyway, I was sure it was xMule's fault, and it turns out I was right.. Thanks for this info. I'll have to check it out. Honestly I don't know what v. of glibc it wants, but I am up to the cooker level now. I had wondered about it being the problem, knew it had worked before, and just decided to upgrade it and "see what happens." As for gdb and strace.. I am clueless. WOuldn't even know how to "play" with them. But, if I don't figure it out another way, I'll figure those out and see what they may be able to do for me. Thanks for help guys.
  11. Alright, after clearing my head.. and getting much needed sleep.... I simply urpmi libuser1 and it upgraded. I was then able to urpmi glibc and it went off without a hitch. There were 43 rpm's in all on that one!! However.. Now I am still getting a dump when I attempt to run amule. ... Sharing <location>/Incoming/044.part.met completing->PerformFileComplete(NULL); !!! OOPS! - Seems like aMule crashed --== BACKTRACE FOLLOWS: ==-- [0] /usr/bin/amule(_ZN9CamuleApp160nFatalExceptionEv+0x3b) [0x81fadfb] [1] /lib/i686/libc.so.6 [0x407c4378] I have uninstalled previous installation of xMule and now both installed and uninstalled both aMule v. 1.2.1 & 1.2.3. Heeeeeeelp!!! ...oh yeah. I also ran emule as another without any pre-existing configuration files, and consequently a different "Incoming" folder as the "Incoming" folder for this user is non default. I got the same error.
  12. Give a serious look to Konq. You've already seen others tout it big here, and I've heard great things about it. I haven't given it a real chance yet because I am into shortcut keys and already know Mozilla in and out. It's a major undertaking to move to another program for me.
  13. Oh god, you didn't just advise somebody to reboot did you?
  14. Hello all... For those of you that missed it, all of my LOWID problems with xMule were magically solved when I switched to aMule. However, the other day my server crashed hard and upon reboot aMule no longer worked. I have been hacking away and removing this and that to install the other and his friend... and have finally reached an ugly spot I've seen before. Instead of just powering through it and possibly making things uglier, I thought I'd throw this up to the community! [root@Thor rpms]# rpm -e libuser error: removing these packages would break dependencies: /etc/libuser.conf is needed by passwd-0.68-1mdk All this is so I can install libuser1, but that won't install because of "/usr/lib/libuser/libuser_files.so" and associated files. Without this, I cannot upgrade glibc and the entire horde of other necessary upgrades that go along with it. I thought about just deleting the .so files, but thought that may be really bad even if they are replaced, and with running both libuser and libuser1... When I tried to rpm -e libuser --force it spit at me not willing to do that for an uninstall. So....... WHAT NOW!!!!???
  15. Thanks Sarah, but that only works when you have a semi working screen. I'm talking about a totally hosed display where you can't even watch the mouse move. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING works locally. Only access whatsoever is remotely. YIKES!! I guess that would do it. I'll try that next time. For a bit more info on my situation, this will happen to my desktop once I load it up with more than a couple apps and leave it running continuously for a couple few weeks. Somewhere along the lines I go to fool with some windows and they begin to slow down to a snail's pace. I begin trying to close programs, but never get far before it get's totally hosed. I attempt a Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and that begins to work, but ultimately fails leaving ghosted windows on my screen and nothing I do locally does anything productive. However, it does seem when I attempt Ctrl+Alt+Backspace again the command does register and the activity light on the tower flickers for a split second. Likely something in the OS is telling it not to try it again because it is already in process is my theory. Anyway, I run a dual screen via two seperate video cards Xinerama or however you spell it. I'd look, but I'm at work, and my putty windows are crunching some heavy duty work making browsing very inefficient. Anyway, thanks for the ideas guys!
  16. I hate to sound like the crochety old man here, but giving a line of command to this guy isn't what is really going to help him, because next time he goes to install software from source he still won't know what he is doing. You have to know why you are cd /home/kili.../updates... instead of cd /updates... and what it all means. There are a lot of gui tools that assist in you not having to know anything about linux, but if you want to do yourself a huge favor, learn the command line. I was looking up some stuff to show to potential clients, etc. the other day and found something wonderful from ibm.com. Take a look if you can manage. It looked very well written to me for people anywhere from nearly total noob to somewhat experienced. IBM's learn linux page
  17. ok.. now that's just plain silly! well, on the other hand, can't blame you for trying. hey.. umh. if the answer is yes, can I get in on the deal too?
  18. I don't disagree with any of these statements for the most part. But, they do validate my point. A strong majority of home users will not be getting into any of this. I personally run 3 133 ide drives on three different channels. The drives are configured for both a large raid0 and a smaller raid 5 partitions. Each of my machines have 512MB ram which is no superbeast, but still leaves me with much to spare in normal application. I never even begin to faintly use the limits of my switched 100MB network. I run 3com 905s and a couple of reasonable linksys switches. More or less.. if you are running a render farm or real time video lab.. Go boy!! If you are doing anything like that, you don't need any of us to tell you there is advantage in gigabit with some other extreme hardware necessity. For the rest of your reading... gigabit will not help you! :)
  19. Both my boxes run 9.1 as well. Actually I've fixed the issue on my server. I was installing it via source and after having it fail to work a couple of times, I just gave in and urpmi'd it. Now it works as well as WINE works.
  20. Come on.. Nobody knows how to reset a tty?
  21. Hi all, The other day I turned on both of my monitors attached to my nix workstation and nothing. I mean nothing. I'm hoping that somebody can tell me if there is a nice simple way to "reset" an appropriate terminal such as /dev/vc1 or the like. I know with AS/400 I can simply vary off and back on a device when it has "failed." When this problem occured I ssh'd in from my server and attempted to kill everything from the :0 display X session, but never did get any display to the screen. I tried doing the various Alt + F1 and Alt + Shift + F1, etc. and about any wacky key combination I could think of really. Nothing worked. I finally wound up telling it to restart from the ssh session when I felt satisfied I had tried everything I could think of.

    check out Pekwm

...bored?... what is that like? I seem to faintly remember the phenomena
  23. This is what I did. Do a search for a rpm from either www.rpmseek.com or www.rpmfind.net. Find whatever rpm you want from them and get to the point where you are going to download it. Find the mirror you like best, and add it as a urpmi source. When you have a good one like I do you can issue something like urpmi --media <whateveryounameit> gcc and it will find all appropriate dependencies and do it all for you. Setting up a urpmi source isn't as hard as some want to make it. I will do something like ftp ftp.mirrors.rpmsource.net or whatever site it is and sign in with user anonymous and a null password. Then I refer to the rpmseek download page for what directories to go down to get to the rpms. When I get to the last directory before the RPMS or SRPMS (or whatever) folder, there should be a folder there also named "base." I then cd base, and ls to make sure it has a "hdlist.cz" file there. The syntax is quite simple for adding a rpm source urpmi.addmedia <UserDefinedNameOfSource> ftp ftp.rpmsource.net/contrib/Mandrake/9.1/RPMS with ../base/hdlist.cz The "ftp" by itself designates the type of rpm source you are adding, whereas the "ftp.rpmsource....." is the full path to the folder on the server where the rpms reside for your distribution. I have spent a lot of time on urpmi and finally decided that it works quite well when you have good sources defined. You can designate whichever rpm source you want (such as the one you just added) with the "--media <UserDefinedNameOfSource>" switch. This removes a LOT of frustration from rpm. If you just want to use the "contrib" source you could do a urpmi.update contrib
  24. Not familiar with Franks corner, but if you get this to go I will be very happy. I attempted to load up Dreamweaver MX and it failed. I even tried using native dlls and what not. First thing that jumps out to me is that -dll ole32=n stuff. Likely the "n" should be replaced by an "appropriate number" rather than literally an n. Secondly it is possible that the syntax passed to wine has changed since the tutorial you are reading. I just installed wine20031118 via rpm on my server and it simply does not work. I got one very basic windows utility to work, but EVERYTHING else just locks up.. even wine --version. Let us know how this turns out. --edit--
  25. give us some specs. Are both boxes involved linux? Are you using NFS? If so, post the appropriate line from /etc/fstab so we can see how it looks.
