  1. Thanks everybody. I have replaced the mouse and everything seems to be well. I really like my mouse pad. It has four USB pots, so I can connect a USB stick or a camera to it without getting off the chair.
  2. What type is the file system on that HD? Is it vfat or ntfs (more likely)? Both can be made writeble, but in the latter case you will need to install ntfs-3g driver (sorry, I forgot its exact spelling). Search this forum for "writable NTFS" or similar keywords, there have been several threads on this. Or consult Mandriva wiki.
  3. Anyone who connects via ssh with your user name and password, will have access to all folders within your home dir. Perhaps other users should use a different login to your PC, but should belong to the same group as you. Then you can give the group a read and write access to the shared folders, and change access to private folders to user only.

Are you saying that thinkwiki explains how to rotate the touchpad? Could you please be more specific?

Unfortunately, this comment highlights a bitter trend - For some reason, translucent menus and rotating cubes are more important than, for instance, detecting a modem. The Linux community quietly conceded a defeat here. On my ThinkPad, Mandriva did not even mark the modem as an unknown device. But I am sure it is there, since I have a port to connect to a phone line.
  6. I am no expert in those things, but let me try... Did you try restarting acpi before doing the second suspend? Also, though you are certain that the BIOS is Ok, it may be a good idea to update it. Since your desktop is an older model, the BIOS may not be 100% ACPI compliant, this might cause a problem when acpid reloads.
  7. I think every decent access point has a web interface for you to login and setup dhcp, filtering, etc. rules. You should be able to see MAC addresses of laptops connected, and there must be some sort of log for you to check as well. If security is a worry, I would enable as much security as possible, including WPA encryption of the traffic, narrowing down the range of IP addresses, using static LAN IPs instead of dhcp, MAC address filtering. But it can also be that signals are week, and the laptop loses connection. In XP, make the WiFi interface appear in the systerm tray (you must click a checkbox somewhere), and you will see if you are losing connection.

    screen rotate

xrandr does rotate the display, but you will find that the touchpad/mouse does not rotate with the screen. So you will have to move your wrist right-left in order to get the cursor moving up-down, to me it's a bit tricky.

    consider using xrandr from cli.
  10. "They" who? Isn't the screen rotation designed for tablets, and tablets are ... err... laptops of some kind?
  11. My publisher requires ghostscript version less than 8.13. Mandriva ships with 8.60, how can I downgrade? Ideally, I would like to use ESP ghostscript 7.07, it works very well on my old desktop and produces excellent documents, they look on screen a lot better than those I prepared with ghostscript 8.60, even with options for high quality (/prepress). Thanks.
  12. I should start worrying about my speed typing, too :D. I use the mouse on a special mouse pad for optical mice. Now I do recall that when I first started using this mousepad, I did noticed the cursor jumping to another corner of the screen for no reason once in a while. However, scrolling was never affected, that's why I did not even think that the surface could be an issue.
  13. Thanks for the idea. I will try another mouse... I might also try my mouse with Windows. It would be a strange coincidence if the mouse got broken at the same time when I replaced the laptop.
  14. Dunno... It is an OEM mouse that came with an IBM ThinkCentre desktop. How do I find out?
  15. I had just changed the setting to scroll by 1 line. Indeed, scrolling has become smoother, but the mouse still behaves `funny': I scroll up, but the cursor suddenly moves down, and this happens at random.
  16. Thanks for clarifying... Will try it now... Though I am not sure this will answer my question. In my case, scrolling up causes the cursor to jump down. Did you say, you had this very problem?
  17. Windows will claim the MBR. You won't be able to boot to linux afterwards. You will need to use some kind of rescue CD to manually edit and reinstall grub. You will have to manually add windows entry for it. Also, I think Windows can only be installed on the primary partition, while linux can go to an extended partition. So, you will need to manually edit the partition table. Maybe, you could do this with some partition management software. I don't know if it can be done with gparted. I would strongly suggest a full backup :D
  18. Thanks for the hint, I will look at those options, though it does not seem to be KDE related - touchpad does not seem to have any issues with scrolling, and KDE should not give a damn about how many mice are attached.
  19. Thanks. Yes I am using 2008.0 on ThinkPad T61. Here is the output of those commands: $ cat /proc/bus/usb/devices |grep -i mouse shows nothing... $ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf |grep -i mouse AllowMouseOpenFail # allows the server to start up even if the mouse does not work Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" Identifier "SynapticsMouse1" InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer" InputDevice "SynapticsMouse1" "AlwaysCore" According to the above, the touchpad uses the driver "mouse", ok... # lsmod |grep -i mouse usbmouse 4832 0 usbcore 118760 6 usb_storage,usbmouse,usbhid,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd Ok, the module usbmouse is loaded...
  20. There are two sides of WiFi security: security of your transmitted data, and security of your network against intruders. As Ian said, WPA encrypts your data quite reliably, and if you are not an international spy, you don't need to worry about this. Having said that, it is wise to disable SSID broadcast (this will make your network invisible) and filter MAC access to your network, to avoid unauthorized access. Even WEP will do in most cases, unless of course your next door neighbor is a hacker. After all, if you walk along the street, you will always find an unprotected network, which is a much easier target.
  21. I have an OEM USB mouse, which works fine with my laptop except for scrolling is not smooth. I mean, when I scroll up or down, the window sometimes "jumps" back a little, as if I were jerking the wheel. I use this mouse when the laptop is docked. The rest of the time I use touchpad, which seems to work fine. Does anybody know what could be a problem? It looks like a config/driver issue to me. I don't think the mouse is broken, it worked OK with my old laptop until I installed Mandriva.
  22. I don't use categories. Sorry for the late reply.
  23. What card do you have? Edit: Sorry, I should have read your post more carefully... Since the card has atheros chipset, did you check if MADWiFi has native drivers for your card?
