  1. Ok, now I understand, sorry can't help you much with that, but I guess it's just a matter of changing or adding some library paths in the Makefile as it seems to be complaining that it can locate the libraries.

    Remember KDE 3.5 is installed under /opt/kde3 in 2009.0 and 2009.1 so you will have to adapt the rpm (rebuild from source rpm) or the Makefile that comes with the source code for that.

    Apart from that I imagine it should work fine.

    Thanks. I am trying to install the baghira theme from the source. Perhaps I will need to change the Makefile? Is it ./configure that I will need to modify? Does anybody here have an experience with this kind of things?

  2. I am another user suffering from the nostalgia for 3.5.x... I have just installed 3.5 packages using the urpmi task-kde3, and now I am trying to install baghira theme, but am getting this error...

    checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.0 and < 4.0) (headers and libraries) not found. Please check your installation!

    I tried rpm from sourceforge but it did not like the dependencies either. Does this mean "bye-bye baghira for me?"

  3. A number of packages seem to be missing and unavailable for installation on my 2009.1 PC, for instance emacs-auctex and evolution-exchange connector. I can see a large list of sources in MCC, but only some of them have the tick against them:

    CD Rom "Mandriva-Linux -2009 Spring (Free) - main"

    CD Rom "Mandriva-Linux -2009 Spring (Free) - contrib"

    Mirror List Main (Official2009.1-1)

    Mirror List Main updates (Official2009.1-2)

    Mirror List Contrib (Official2009.1-9)

    Mirror List Contrib Updates (Official2009.1-10)

    Mirror List Non-Free (Official2009.1-17)

    Mirror List Non-Free Updates (Official2009.1-17)

    Other sources do not have tick (backports, testing, debug), and they don't seem to be mainstream...

    What sources should I add to add to be able to get all the packages I need?

    Edit: Found them... It turns out I should have searched through all packages (who would have thought?). Nonetheless, do I miss any sources I should have added?

  4. I have Nvidia GE 9500FX graphics card. I was able to install proprietary Nvidia drivers for this card using MCC ("Setup the Graphics Server"). Initially the installer downloaded driver version 173.xxx. For some reason, the installer experienced some problems with that driver and reverted back to the xorg driver, but when I repeated the process, the installer pulled a newer kernel from the sources and installed the newer nvidia driver, version 180.yyy. The system became very snappy, which I liked

    Unfortunately, eventually, when I switched back to the original kernel and reconfigured the graphics (silly me!), I somehow managed to downgrade back to the driver version 173.xxx. Now I cannot upgrade to version 180, regardless the kernel i use. Is it possible to force the upgrade?

    Another, perhaps an unrelated question... How can I speed up keyboard? In KDE 3, there used to be sliders to adjust keyboard repeat rate and delay. Is there anything like that in KDE 4?

    Thanks

  5. On my Thinkpad, hot keys did not work in Mandriva 2008.0 out of the box. Most of them worked in Ubuntu, but ironically Fn+F7 (which toggles between the laptop LCD and an external display) did not work either. I had to do a lot of tweaking until I got it working. There are two things to resolve here. First, the graphic card must be configured to allow output to an external display. Secondly, ACPI daemon must be able to recognize the event "Fn+Fx is pressed" and must be able to take an appropriate action.

    Casio, the easiest thing to start with is connect the monitor and configure the graphics card again using the Mandriva configuration tools or the card config utility (if you have Nvidia or ATI).

  6. Cheese is just a normal program to display the output of the webcam and to allow you to take snapshots, it can't help you with skype.

    With regards to the errors you are getting with cheese I don't know what it causing them. Are you perhaps trying to run cheese while some other program (skype/mencoder) is already using the webcam? Only a single program can use the webcam at any given moment.

    I see... In that case, it's not worth trying to fix it :-) Thanks anyway.

  7. Thanks for the idea... Does it allow you to change configuration for the webcam so that you can use it with other software? I need to use it with skype.

    Cheese cannot find the webcam, but mencoder and skype can! Here is the output I get from cheese. Does this make any sense at all?

     $ cheese

  8. 'cheese' (available in the Mandriva repos) has some effects, including horizontal flip, maybe that's what you need?

    Thanks for the idea... Does it allow you to change configuration for the webcam so that you can use it with other software? I need to use it with skype.

  9. My webcam is branded as Skymaster SC-834, but lsusb reports the device as ID 0c45:62c0 Microdia. The camera works out of the box, both with Mandriva 2008.0 and Ubuntu 9.04 unlike my previous Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000, which I could not get to work with Ubuntu. I believe this new camera uses the kernel module uvcvideo.

    The only problem is that the image is inverted left to right :-) I am wondering if there is software solution to this problem. The camera naturally comes with some Windows software, which I suppose should do the trick on a windows machine.

  10. I would suggest to check the acpi scripts. For me, Mandriva 2008.0 installed a very basic collection of acpi scripts. Suspend-to-RAM, turning on and off the display, brightness controls and switching the external display on and off did not work. I cannot remember the details, but I fixed these problems using the information I found on thinkwiki. Maybe, installing configure-thinkpad would do the job, I did not try that package. I use pm_suspend scripts.

  11. IMy personal choice is a Thinkpad T series. It's a business line laptop, hence you can get it with non-shiny screen, but check with them whether you can get a 4x3 screen, it may not be advertised on the website but may be available as an option. Thinkpads used to be much better built, with magnesium alloy chassis, etc, though they may be more expensive. Graphics options change all the time, nonintel cards provide a better quality graphics (video, games, etc.) but a bit more power hungry. A critical issue with graphics cards is the ability to resume from suspend/hibernate - more recent ones are more likely to give you trouble. Check www.thinkwiki.org and www.emperorlinux.com. The latter is a linux company that sells both Dells and Thinkpads, so you know that what you buy is Linux compatible.

  12. Thanks, scarecraw. This solves the problem of interactively deleting files. Indeed, Mandriva sets those commands as aliases in /etc/profile.d/alias.sh. If I could also find a solution to beeping :-)

    I think I found a solution... According to this post,

    http://machttp://macosx.com/forums/unix-x1...ion-bash-2.html

    it is necessary to put

    set show-all-if-ambiguous on

    in the file ~/.inputrc . I created this file, and the problem is solved.

  13. I figured out that bash terminal shell behaves slightly differently in Ubuntu and Mandriva.

    The biggest difference for me is when I type some thing like this:

    $ ls fil

    and then press TAB. In Mandriva, pressing TAB gives me a list of all files in this directory that start with fil:

    file1 file2 file_to_delete

    In ubuntu, I first hear a loud beep, and the list appears only when I press TAB for the second time.

    The second big difference is that Ubuntu does not request me to confirm whether I want to remove a file, when I type

    $ rm file

    , ie it defaults to

    $ rm -f file

    . Mandriva gives you a chance to confirm deleting, I like this feature a lot.

    Now my question is how I can make bash in Ubuntu follow Mandriva's settings. I have an Ubuntu PC in my office. Coming from Mandriva, I have a habit of pressing TAB very frequently, so the beep irritates everybody around. I don't want to disable speaker altogether - occasionally, the beep is useful. Also, it would be good to change the behavior of the rm command. I recall that there must be an alias somewhere but I cannot remember where it is.

    Can anybody please help.

  14. To disable the greeting message, add this line to the .emacs config file:

    (setq inhibit-startup-message t)

    For the problem with mouse, I never come across anything like that. Perhaps, you should enable scrolling via emacs options.
