  1. Thanks. What's "a trad copy"?

In regard to partitioning... My 1005HA has two partitions out of the box! Thanks, Asus. It's however somewhat disturbing that they do not regard this model as "GNU LINUX compatible" (unlike 1008), what could this mean?

  2. Thank you, scarecrow and paulopen. Which version of mandriva would you recommend - One or Free? Which one of them is "100% netbook friendly" as claimed by mandriva? The applications I will be using most of the time are Firefox, Emacs, Latex + Ghostscript, and Adobe Reader. It would be nice to be able to sync with my Palm too.

  3. The same problem with 2008.0 here. I have to reconfigure the WiFi connection manually every time when I lose the signal, because the config defaults to WEP. Interestingly, on boot the card always connects to the network without any problem. AFAIK, 2008.0 WiFi configuration scripts are crippled. In addition to the problem you mentioned, there is no way to connect to an enterprise network. Also I was unable to use Mandriva tools to configure a PPTP VPN tunnel (webmin worked fine).

  4. Currently, I use Evolution exchange connector to access the Microsoft exchange server from my Mandriva 2009.1 desktop and Mandriva 2008.0 laptop. Almost all features work except for accessing other users calendars.

Using exchange connector, I can access all my resources, and Global Adress list (GAL), but when I try connecting to other users calendars I receive the "Folder does not exist" error. Is there a solution to this?

I tried using MAPI plugin instead of exchange connector plugin but I could not even browse GAL. I read somewhere that MAPI requires samba4. Samba4 packages are available in the repos, but the packages installed on my machine are called samba - I presume that's samba 3? Do I have to uninstall those packages and install samba4, or can I just install samba4 on top/in addition to of the installed packages?

  5. Hmm... I cannot see anything related to external speakers

I was playing with two controls, Master and Front. Both did pretty much the same thing - turned up/down volume on both external and internal speakers at the same time. Interestingly, my another computer (laptop, MDV 2008.0) has a 'Speaker Playback Switch' control, but as you can see, the desktop does not have it. Could this be a root of the problem? Is it possible to add such a control?

You mentioned kmixrc.... I run KDE 3.5.10 installed on top of KDE 4, but I don't have kmixrc in /home/valu/.kde/share/config/. There is one in /home/valu/.kde4/share/config/ though. Does this mean, I must run kmixer from KDE3.5.10 instead? It does not seem to exist in /opt/bin, does it have to be installed separately?

  6. Indeed, I use external speakers plugged into sound card. However, the internal speaker is not disconnected for some unknown reason, therefore when I turn down the volume of the internal speaker using the kmix control, the volume from the external speakers also goes down. Turning them up adds an audible noise to the sound, it's quite annonying.

  7. What's mixer channel settings map?

The card is onboard Intel. Here is what lspci tells about it:

Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JD/DO (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)

The external speakers work as well as internal one. I just want to play back music/youtube/skype through the external internal speaker, and leave the internal speaker for system beeps only.

  8. Thanks, scarecrow.

Could you please give me a little more guidance? phonon-xine package, real-codecs and win32-codecs are installed (the latter two are from PLF). Also, I installed flash-player-plugin from PLF. After disabling pulse-audio, logging out and loggin in again, youtube clips have sound (another mirracle!)

I can play CDs with VLC, kaffeine, KsCD, xine, but not with totem or amarok. I can live without totem, but I would like to be able to use amarok. What bugs me is that I have no understanding of what's going on :-) hence I cannot sort out any problems, for example I would like to disable the PC speakers and play through the external speakers. Also, I had trouble with using the microphone but that probably a subject for a separate post.

  9. I am completely lost with sound configuration in Mandriva 2009.1 Spring. With PulseAudio on, I don't have sound from speakers when I play CDs or Youtube clips. With PulseAudio disabled, I can play CDs with KsCD, but don't have any sound whwn I play clips from YouTube. Also, sound comes from both the PC internal speaker and speakers attached to the back of the box (I only want proper speakers to work). This is very confusing... can anybody help please?

  10. In Mandriva 2008.1, KDE 3,5 config center (kcontrol) has an entry called "GTK styles and fonts". There, I can configure the style of GTK applications (firefox, evolution). However, Mandriva 2009.1 with KDE 3.5 does not have this option. How can I change the color scheme of GTK apps? I think the gtk-qt engine is installed.

  11. I use Matlab+Simulink a lot, and have many windows open. Even though both KDE and Gnome panel have an ability to group those windows together, the list could be quite large - easily more than a dozen windows. In all my previous Mandriva + KDE installations, I was able to bring, say, a scope window up to the foreground by clicking on an icon in the simulink model - this was much easier than going through the panel and the list.

After moving to Ubuntu, I found that this was no longer possible. Clicking a scope only highlighted a tab in the panel, but does not bring the scope window to the foreground. Some googling suggested that that this was a new design feature in Metacity to prevent new windows from stealing the focus.

What a surprise is to find out that KDE has adopted a similar feature. If I click a scope in a model, all I have is a blue tab in the panel, and a flashing window name. I run Mandriva 2009.1 with KDE 3.5, but windows behave exactly the same as in Ubuntu. Is there a way to setup windows to behave the way I used to?

KDE 3.5 control center has a menu for Window-Specific Settings, with a single entry "Disable focus stealing prevention for XV". This sounds like a right place to look, but I have no clue what to do.

  12. I get this error message

    error: Failed build dependencies:
           kdebase-devel is needed by kde-theme-baghira-0.8-2plf2009.1.src

According to urpmi, kdebase-devel does not exist. There is kdebase3-devel-doc, so I am assuming there must be kdebase3-devel as well? Should I use kdebase4-devel? I am trying to rebuild the package for KDE3.5.10. Actually, the source is called kde-theme-baghira-0.8-2plf2008.1.src. I don't know where 2009.1 comes from....

  13. I installed KDE 3.5.10 alongside KDE 4.2 on my Mandriva 2009.1 PC using urpmi task-kde3. I would like to repackage the baghira theme rpm (available from PLF) to match the new location of KDE libraries in /opt/kde3. The package was created for 2008 spring, but it installs fine via the MCC, all dependencies are satisfied. Can please anybody walk me through this?

[moved from Art and Design by spinynorman]

  14. The topic says it... Sound is lost after installing KDE 3.5.10. Sound works in mplayer, but when I am trying to test system notifications in KDE 3.5.10 control center (kcontrol), I hear nothing but silence from the speakers. If that helps, I had the same problem with KDE 4.2, but then I just disabled pulseaudio, and that was all it needed. Pulse audio is still disabled. Any ideas please?

Edit: This is completely beyond my understanding - I stopped the sound system (untick "Enable the sound system in kcontrol -> Sound and Multimedia -> Sound system"), Then started it again, and I just got a progress bar growing from 0 to 100% over and over again. I lost my patience and just closed the KDE 3.5 control center, and opened it again. To my amusement, I can now hear the KDE startup and logout jingles, and the system beep (wav files), but I could not test any other sounds (ogg). Also, amarock does not pickup wav files, but rythmbox, xine can play wavs just fine.
