    PCMCIA slot

Now I find that if I open a terminal, log into root and go to /etc/rc.d/init.d and then: PCIC=tcic ./pcmcia start then I can use my wireless card. Is there a spot that I can put that command so that I do not have to type it in everytime that I reboot the computer?

I also find that when I go to MCC > System > Services, the pcmcia is listed but it is 'stopped'. When I hit the start button nothing happens. There is a check mark at 'on boot' but even after a reboot (yes, I am used to Windows, I reboot at the drop of a hat, old habits die hard...) it is still listed as 'stopped'.

    PCMCIA slot

After more googling, I went into /etc/modprobe.preload and added the lines: yenta_socket cardmgr and now the lights on the card light up but that is about it. Even after rebooting with the card in, it was not detected. One step closer but still not there...

    PCMCIA slot

I am trying to install a wireless PC card (Netgear MA 401) in a PCMCIA slot on a Dell Latitude D600. When I plug it in no lights on the card ever light up and when I go to MCC and look at hardware there is no card listed, nor are the PCMCIA slots listed. I know that the slots and the card are good as the card is usable when I boot the system into Win XP. The same thing happened with a D-Link card that I had tried to use earlier. I went into MCC > Software Management > Install and found software called 'pcmcia-cs-3.2.8-1mdk' and I installed it but it changed nothing. Is there something that I need to do to 'turn on' the PCMCIA under Linux? If I can at least get this wireless PC card working it will make it a bit easier on me while I am trying to get my Intel Centrino wireless working, this 100' patch cable snaking through my living room and downstairs to my router really sucks... Thanks Todd
  5. Thanks for the advice (again). I added them and am just waiting for an excuse to take her for a spin :)
  6. I am having the same issue with my PRO/Wireless card and I ended up here at http://ipw2100.sourceforge.net/. I haven't had the time to roll up my sleeves and really get into it though. I am pretty new to Linux and it all seems pretty complicated at the moment... Gotta take the plunge soon though, hate not having wireless :(
  7. I went into MCC 'Media Manager' and removed the CDs from there. I saw a 'update_source' medium so I kept that and then I added the line: urpmi.addmedia main ftp://ftp.rutgers.edu/pub/Mandrakelinux/official/10.1/i586/media/main with media_info/hdlist.cz I also see 'contrib', 'plf', and 'jpackage' on the easyurpmi site. Should I add them or will that cause problems? Thanks. Todd
  8. Thanks for the reply, that does make sense. And YES! I now have Firefox as my default browser! I like it when a plan comes together. Now all I need to do is figure out what is wrong with my PCMCIA slots on the laptop, how to get my Intel Centrino wireless working... I think that I am going to be busy for a bit :) thanks for all the help. Todd
  9. OK, better late then never. 7970 here :)
  10. Asking why things are done as they are in Linux should not be taken as criticizing Linux. I am used to the Windows way of doing things (unfortunatly) and the 'Linux' way is different and if I do not understand the reason why something may seem more complicated then what I am used to I see no reason why I should not ask. I am sure that there is a reason that there is not a 'make as default browser' check box as there is in Windows and I am curious as to what this reason might be. I don't think that asking question about why an OS does things a certain way means that I am not 'ready' for Linux, hell, asking those questions is a major reason that I am turning to Linux and leaving Windows. This is certainly not an attempt to start a a flame and i appreciate all of the help that you guys have given me with all of my questions (past and future) :) Todd
  11. No, that didn't do it either. Maybe it is just me but it seems to be awful difficult just trying to set a default browser...
  12. I went to the site: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/easyurpmi/ and I have a few simple questions. Right now when I use urpmi it is my understanding that the only place that my computer looks is to the three CDs that I downloaded and used to install Linux. Would I be better off typing urpmi.removemedia -a, reinitializing urpmi's setup and then adding: urpmi.addmedia --update updates ftp://ftp.rutgers.edu/pub/Mandrakelinux/official/updates/10.1/main_updates with media_info/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia main ftp://ftp.rutgers.edu/pub/Mandrakelinux/official/10.1/i586/media/main with media_info/hdlist.cz (which I picked up off of the easyurpmi site) would this be advantagous to me or should I just let it point to the CDs? Thanks in advance for answering another newbie question. Todd
  13. I tried that but when I click on a link in an e-mail nothing happens. I used Thunderbird and Evolution and got the same result. Is there any way of getting Firefox to show up in the 'select a browser' box?
  14. How can I configure Firefox to be the default browser in Gnome? The Windows version has a 'make as default browser' option but no such thing exists in the Linux version. I am using Mandrake 10.1 and went to 'Configuration' > 'Gnome' > 'Advanced' > 'Prefered Applications'. I have two choices under 'Default web browser' and they are 'Select a web browser' and 'Custom web browser'. Under 'Select a web browser' Firefox is not listed. Under 'Custom web browser' it says 'mozilla %s' I took a chance and changed that to 'firefox %s' but of course it was not that easy. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong? And why would there not be a 'make as default browser' option as there is in the Windows version? I'm sure that there is a good reason, I'm just missing it...
  15. Thanks for the response. I considered updating the firmware on the 2100 but I am using a dual boot with Windows XP (i know, yuck, but I'm not ready to solo yet...) and I was afraid that that may make it inoperable with Windows. Or am I mistaken and is the firmware that you are refering to platform independant? I was on the sourceforge site and it all looked a bit intimidateing but if the firmware update does not disable that 2100 in Windows then I am more then willing to try it out. And yes the radio is on as I do use it in windows and I also use Mandrake 10.1. Now when I go to MCC > hardware > hardware I see the 2100 listed under ethernet cards.
  16. That took care of it :) Thanks Todd
  17. I have been further researching the 2100 with Linux and at the moment I think that I am going to find a compatable PCMCIA WLAN card and go with that for the moment. Configuring the 2100 looks like it will be a bit complicated and I would like to get online now. Once I get online I can play with the 2100. Thanks for the info, it was certainly informative. Todd
  18. I was trying to configure my Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 on a Dell D600 but have not had much luck and after some research I find that it will be rather involved at best. I am pretty new to Linux and would like a 'quick fix' for the moment. Getting a PCMCIA WLAN card that works with Linux would be great, I could get this laptop online while I work on the PRO/Wireless. Does anyone have experience with what cards work best? I can get a Linksys WPC11 and I saw that it was on a compatability list at: http://www.linux-wlan.org/docs/wlan_adapters.html.gz. Any thoughts? Thanks Todd
  19. I am having the exact same problem with a Dell D600 laptop. I posted in the hardware/drivers section. If I get it resolved I will let you know how...
  20. I just installed Mandrake 10.1 on a Dell Latitude D600 and everything seems to have gone fine with one exception. I am trying to configure the wireless but I seem to be caught in a loop. Here are the steps that I am taking: I go to MCC > Network & Internet > New conection > Wireless connection. At that point I get a dialog box but it dissapears way to quick to see and I am left with one choice - 'Manually load a driver'. After I hit next I choose 'ipw2100 (IntelĀ® PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Driver). I am then given two choices, Autoprobe and Specify options. If I choice Autoprobe I am just taken back to the 'Manually load a driver' page and the loops keeps repeating itself. I do not understand the options on the 'Specify options' page so I can't fill that in. BTW, I am a real Linux newbie and appreciate any advice that anyone can offer, thanks. Todd
  21. Warning: Linux newbie here :) I am trying to install a program, not really interested in the app itself but I need the practice. When I try to run ./configue I get this error: [tparks@192 xmahjongg-3.6.1]$ ./configure loading cache ./config.cache checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr//bin/install -c checking whether build environment is sane... yes checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes checking for working aclocal... missing checking for working autoconf... missing checking for working automake... missing checking for working autoheader... missing checking for working makeinfo... missing checking for gcc... gcc checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables. I went back to mcc and installed all of the development tools but that did not help. Any suggestions? Thanks. 22. OK, I did all of that but the login screen stayed the same (but it was fun :) )
  23. hi and welcome aboard :) Thanks :) umm.. i think you need to clarify something... do you want to change the gnome-login screen or the gnome splash (the picture you see when you login) or do you want to change the bootup-screen (=bootsplash)? what you get at art.gnome.org are splash-screens and gdm themes but NOT bootscreens/bootsplash. I want to change the login screen. In fact, on art.gnome.org I downloaded what is refered to as "Login Manager". I guess that I am not that clear on the difference between a 'gnome splash' and a 'bootsplash' but I will figure that out... if you want to change the gdm theme, double click on the theme you want to use at the selection screen (the dot needs to be marked, otherwise it will still use the old theme) I did all of the above while in gdmsetup and the theme that I chose did have the dot, I even closed gdm and reopened it and the theme was still chosen. I logged out and back in however, and nothing had changed. I appreciate the advice. I am sure that I am overlooking something simple and will feel pretty silly once I get it figured out... Thanks again
  24. Just to let you all know, I am a real Linux newbie, that said, here is my problem... I am trying to change the boot theme and nothing seems to work. I am using Mandrake 10.1 and Gnome 2.6. I went to http://art.gnome.org/ and downloaded a couple of boot themes. I then went to gdmsetup > Graphical Greeter and successfully added the theme. I then chose the theme and clicked on 'close'. I logged out and back in but the boot theme never changed. I opened the Mandrake Control Center > boot > boot theme and the only theme there to choose is 'Discovery'. Any clues as to what I am doing wrong? Thanks. Todd
