  1. Hmmm... the site works fine for me, but I'm using a download 1.5 Beta 2 (very nice and fast btw). You might want to try that.
  2. Also, before you delete as root (unrecoverable if it causes a problem), you should just move the file somewhere else. That way if it causes problems you can move it back to the proper place.
  3. Is the problem with adding them to a library or playing them? Make sure it cannot play first, that will help isolate the problem. If it will not add them to the media library, make sure their is a .aac extension at the end of each one (I had a problem with it not recognizing ogg files until I did that).
  4. Two ideas: 1. Try reinstalling KDM (should be possible through the MCC). 2. It's a bit of a workaround, but the shutdown command will do the same thing. You could make a bash script to do so and put it on your desktop, or simply type the command.
  5. Yes, you must install the gnome-control-center for it work, the reason being that Firefox and Thunderbird are GTK-based, so you have to set in KDE and the gnome-control-center (which can be started without gnome :)).
  6. You also may need the devel versions of some packages as well.
  7. No, that is not normal. Two minutes to get to the KDE screen might make sense, but even on a very slow computer, starting KDE is usually a quick process (10 seconds or so for me). What part does it take longest on? Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F6 and see if that console says anything about it. Seeing as it takes longer if you're away, I'm guessing the problem would be with finding a DHCP server, but I'm not quite sure how you'd go about fixing that... Try googling your laptop number along with the word "linux" in your search term. If there's a known problem or workaround, it might be there, especially since some laptops are Linux-friendly and some are not.
  8. Did the teacher provide any information whatsoever about how to go about the assignment? If you are resorting to forums to do your homework, it seems kind of desperate... That said, I'm not quite sure how you'd go about that, as I've never done it myself. It certainly is possible, but I wouldn't try with Mandriva . Probably something along the lines of Damn Small Linux would work better (Google that for info), but again, I'm not sure.
  9. Ok, #1. If it completely freezes, instead of force rebooting, try Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart the X server, which should achieve the same thing. #2. To install the drivers for your card, you can get them from nvidia.com and if you aren't sure how to follow the directions in that readme, just ask us and we will help. Not sure if that's the problem, but try installing the drivers and see if that helps anything. You could also try upgrading Firefox to 1.0.7, but I'm not sure if that would make much difference.
  10. I had a friend who had that problem and libdvdcss fixed it. Go into a konsole and then type "su" to log in as root. Type "urpmi libdvdcss" without the quotes to install it. Once you're done, close the konsole window and it will log you out of root (good because being in root for too long is dangerous). If you need help setting up urpmi, go here.
  11. Also, substitute soundwrapper in "soundwrapper realplayer" for "artsdsp realplayer".
  12. Also if you like the autoscroll thingy that is default in Windows, you can turn that on (thus eliminating the middle-click problem) with Edit->Preferences->Advanced->Use Autoscrolling.
  13. Also, if your SuSe partition is on the same hard drive as your Mandy one, then it will be hda(number), but it it's on a different drive, it will be hdb(number). hda, hdb refer to the whole drive, hdabcwhatever(number) refer to one partition on it.
  14. It will probably be auto-mounted under /mnt. Look there. The name format will be hda[number] or sda[number] if you have a SATA or SCSI drive. Poke around until you find the one you know is the SuSe drive.
  15. Never used it, but I did some googling, and KMyMoney is part of the KDE project and released under the GPL and free of charge. I love Linux :).
  16. I agree with the previous comment. The plugins are easy enough to install, but in case you need a little help, just ask! If you want a good, very comprehensive reference book btw, I'd recommend Running Linux, Fourth Edition. You sound exactly like me. Roughly two years ago I was pretty casual with the computer, and now I'm a Linux user who helps all his friends with computer problems and even programs a bit. Computers are wonderful I think :).
  17. I bought an Intel, though AMD's look very promising. That's probably what I'll buy next. Anyone here use Transmeta?
  18. Ok, well I guess I'll just use KDE and arts as asoundrc didn't work correctly. Thanks for the help, it's the effort that counts :).
  19. 1. About emulation of Windows programs. There are a few things you can do. #1 If you don't want to pay, you can try wine. It often doesn't get great results but is worth a try. To download go into the Control Center (mcc) and go to add programs and search for wine and install it. You should setup your urpmi repositories as well because that makes program installation a whole lot easier. #2 You can get Cedega, which costs $5 a month, but will often play the newest 3D games like WoW and such. #3 You can get Codeweavers Crossover which will probably not do games but may do Trillian, dunno cuz I've never used it! It costs money as well. You have some options in the emulation realm but I'd just learn to love Gaim or Kopete. A lot of these apps take a bit of getting used to but I often prefer them after I have. 2. Assuming you did the default install, you will have ark installed (if not go into the Control Center and install it). You can unzip the tar.gz with it by double-clicking on it. After that, just click "extract" at the top and extract it somewhere. Go into the folder and click on the Firefox installer program. That should work, and it's fairly easy to install. Alternatively, if the newest version isn't super important to you, you can install it from the MCC (Mandrake Control Center), it will be listed under mozilla-firefox most likely. 3. Linux is a great thing. Welcome aboard!
  20. Hmm... if you rebooted each time afterwards, I don't know what the problem is. Is the "monitor out of range" message from KDE and the GUI or from your monitor itself?
  21. If you don't need a server (just a client), you can use Kaffeine. It works great and can stream stuff with playlists and such. Just "urpmi kaffeine".
  22. I'd get LE 2005 , it's quite stable and moreso than 10.1 IMHO. If you don't mind doing some config, I'd just get the free download edition, but your choice, the power pack is quite nice, especially with a slow connection. So my recommendation = LE 2005 with KDE3.4 - $13.50.
  23. For some reason, Mandriva detects your horizontal and vertical sync rates but doesn't realize what resolutions it's capable of. I had this problem recently with Debian and editing the file forced it to listen to sense :). What does it say in your display section under 24-bit color depth right now? Try making it like this just in case: SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" Also try adding that at all the color depths (remember backup the file first :). Then reboot the computer and try setting the resolution in KDE or with monitor-edid.
  24. No problem :). Ok, #1. Backup your /etc/X11/ directory, that way if you screw something up you can copy it back. #2. It looks like the correct values are already there, you shouldn't need to change anything in the Monitor section. #3. In the Screen section, what you proposed doing should work, though keep the 800x600 option there as well just in case you need to switch back to it. For example, mine is: SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection Thus enabling 1024x768, 800x600 and 640x480. After saving your changes, test them with ctr+alt+backspace then change the resolution in the GUI (KDE, Gnome or whatever). As for your monitor dying, if you know 1024x768 works, it should be fine. If you lose your display, just go ctr+alt+F1 and copy your old config file that's unchanged back and then switch back to the display with ctr+alt+F7 then use ctr+alt+backspace to restart X. Hope that helps :).
