  1. It starts looking more like some other networking issue, as webmin works in server, but I cannot get to it from winbox. Or maybe I have lost all my linux skills after 3 years on windows. Problem is, I know even less about Windows networking than that of linux. I attempted to switch firewall off, that did not change anything. And editing samba config from webmin locally, i.e. straight on the server did not change anything. Still server is visible from winbox Network Neigborhood and still its not acessible from there. Hmm... btw, does Mandrake One install some firewall by default? [edit] Answer my own Q: yes it does, but killing shorewall did not change anything - I still cannot ping server from Winbox, no access to samba or webmin. Wahur
  2. Hi! What I have: Mandriva 2008 box running samba, to be serving files for small home network of other Mandriva/WinXP computers. My primary workstation running dualboot WinXP Pro/Linux. I partitioned the server to have large /home, with user directories, plus I wish to set up one public directory for music, pictures etc. Then I set up samba using how-to from this forum, i.e using drakwizard. I must say that this how-to is not fully applicable to Mandriva 2008 anymore, MCC has multiple points for configuring this file sharing and altogether it gets somewhat confusing. First task was to get sharing with own primary WinXP workstation working. I do have the same user names and passwords on both computers. Everything worked up to the point where how-to says that on Win computer I browse to the server and it will ask me for a password. It does not. Samba server is visible in Network Neighbourhood, but when I click on it, all I get is complaint that I have no access rights, no password is asked. When I checked the server properties it says something along the lines that server cannot be found in the network. What is probably relevant is that server cannot be pinged from the Win computer. By name it does not find it, by ip it times out. Pinging Winbox from the server works just fine. Oh, and another weird thing. Server hostname is 'laaneserver', workgroup is 'laanetalu', but Winbox "sees" the server also as 'Laanetalu' - in Network Neighborhood the server name is 'Samba Server 3.0.25b (Laanetalu)'. Wahur
  3. Hi! I am a translator by trade. Couple of times a year I work, mostly for fun, for local film festival, translating subtitles for festival films. Up to now my output has been very simple text files, someone else somewhere either makes subtitles or, in most cases, enters them manually, in real time. When I heard about that crazy manual entering of subtitles I thought that probably it is not too difficult to prepare those subtitles myself. I receive films for translation on DVDs without any copy protection, mostly even without any fancy menus, so copying these files to my computer is not a big problem. Burning things back to dvd can be done with k3b. But what has to happen in between is rather hazy. I did look at fansubbing sites, but they have quite different issues and end-product quality is not a big deal for them - so they do things like converting from dvd to avi. Now for me - whatever I do will be shown on a big screen and loss of quality is simply unacceptable. 1. Timing. Is there a Linux software that I can use for timing the subtitles? 2. Formats. When I look around in web there is gazillion of subtitle formats. What do i need? 3. How do I format these text files I have, what software should I use, where do I put these files when ready, are there any other files i have to modify? idx? W
  4. I wonder how is this all relevant? Fat partition we are talkin' about is smaller than 30GB. Bad sectors - would it be possible that windows cannot see "behind" bad sectors? Otherwise this would not be relevant as well - probably. Cause I currently have most of my Linux system installed on those invisible 5GB and everything works just fine... This part of disk is not bad, just invisible to Win :D

    Minor annoyance

Yep, thats exactly as the description says. I am used to move 1 word left or right using these combinations, and now, after fresh install of Mandrake 2007 Free these do not work. Not in OpenOffice, not in KOffice, not in Firefox as I am writing this text now. Now it may seem like a minor annoyance, but I am working as a professional translator and moving few words forward or back is what I do all the time... So the annoyance is actually quite major. Running KDE desktop (but the problem is not limited to KPrograms), install was clean install, just few days ago, even without old /home being brought over.
  6. And no. The problem still stands unsolved despite my early optimism. Looks like the problem is following: As I said, to my knowledge this disk is approximately 40GB - Linux would see little more than 37 GB. Windows somehow cannot see approximately 5 last megabytes, different Windows tools report different disk sizes from 31,5 to 32,2GB If I create a fat partition using Win tools then it becomes visible. Disk Manager would also see Linux partitions, except for those that are located on the last missing 5GB. It would also complain about incorrect partition table and not being able to read lots of sectors when first accessing the disk. Now, when I installed Mandriva again, without even touching the fat partition I had created, obviously partition table was overwritten by Linux. Now if Windows tries to look at it, it will see that C,H,S numbers are "wrong", it decides the table is faulty and it will not even look inside. D: partition becomes invisible again. How to resolve that issue, i have no clue. Maybe I should start messing with BIOS, as some other sources suggest, but as I already started with a big translation job (fortunately can do it Linux-only), I will probably not risk the health of my computer before mid-January when its done and out.
  7. OK, I have the problem solved, with one last question remaining. I downloaded Acronis Disk Director Suite trial version. This was able to see all the partitions just fine. Trial version is limited to making very small partitions only, so I made just one tiny FAT32 partition with it and assigned letter D: to it. Now, all of a sudden, but not quite unexpected, Disk Manager saw not only this new small D:, but also all the other partitions. Now I was able to delete the existing partitions and make needed partition. I will have to reinstall Linux, but this is a non-issue. Just one more question. Disk Manager can create only NTFS partitions. Now, last time I checked NTFS writing was experimental in Linux. What is the situation now? Could I used existing NTFS partition reliably for sharing data between Lin and Win? Or should I find now a way to turn this NTFS partition into a FAT32?
  8. No. Device Manager is the Win version of HardDrake. There the second drive is visible. Letters can be assigned to partitions in Disk Manager and there I cannot see neither the second disk nor any partitions on it.
  9. Thats correct. As I said in my first post, disk is seen on hardware level, i.e. in Device Manager it is visible and reportedly works fine, but in a Disk Manager it is invisible, there is no second disk or partition, as though it does not exist at all. Also, when I tried to access it using XP Home Installation disk, it failed to find second disk or partition. Therefore it seems, that whatever I can do about it, must be done using Linux, either Mandriva or some live distro like Knoppix. One thing that comes to my mind is to try to bring the disk into some kind of "virgin state", deleting all the partitions and reformatting it, but I am not sure and would definitely need guidance for such operation. I know it sounds very much like solving Windows troubles in Linux forums ;) but in Win forums nobody had a clue at all, all I got was abuse about f..cking my box up using Linux
  10. Yes, as I said, Linux installation worked OK, saw all the partitions etc. All I can think of, is that Mandriva-created fat partition was somehow flawed, and Win would not recognize it as such. Wahur
  11. Hi! Been Mandrake user since 8.0 and really feel ashamed of making such a dumb mistake. But I really need your help recovering from it. I had Win98 installed on 20GB primary master (games only). 40GB primary slave had over the years of playing with multiple distros turned into a mess of about 10 partitions, many standing idle. About a month ago I started a new career as a freelance translator, so I had to make a usable tool of my computer. Plan was to install XP+MS Office+Trados CAT software on first disk, make a fat partition for sharing data between Win&Lin in the beginning of second disk and install brandnew Mandriva 2007 in the end of second disk. Here is where I made my mistake. Because second disk needed total repartitioning, I decided to install Mandriva first and use its partitioning tool for making new partitions. Everything went fine. Mandriva installed OK, everything worked. XP installed fine, except that it would not see the other disk. Or, rather, its device manager is aware of the disk and tells me its working fine, but Disk Manager cannot see it at all. I suppose the cause is something that Mandriva partitioner did. Now I wonder if there is a way to clear the second disk in the hopes that it becomes visible for XP again. Wahur, desperate, as big job is already waiting
  12. Original drivers would be impossible to find now - and should not be needed, as all the HP MFPs use nowadays hplip that is new and shiny stuff from HP itself and should make everything work automagically. Hplip was not even started when the original setup was made, although parts of the code did exist and were used in my setup. Stupidest thing is that there is nothing about such error in the internet. With a device fairly uncommon this means other people have been doing without this error. And my problem fairly unique. Wahur, has already wasted more than a day
  13. Heh, I was about to answer that its switched off as it should. But then remembered that this box was installed later and separately from all others. So now, after checking I can confirm that 1) P&P was on and 2) nothing changed when I switched it off. In fact, after some tinkering with cups web interface I managed to get printing over LAN working (before playing with BIOS). But scanning still does not work, the same stupid "Document feeder empty" error. Vahur
  14. And right answer should be to disable P&P? I do not think this is an issue - as i explained this hardware setup worked just fine for years until distro upgrade. Wahur
  15. Hello all! Couple of years ago I set up a nice small network for my parents involving few boxes running Mandrake 10.1 and multifunctional printer mentioned in the topic. Not that it worked easily but with some advice from Linuxprinting.org and after downloading and installing some extra stuff I had it done. Both scanning and printing worked just fine. Setup involved one oldish box serving as workstation and cups server + laptops that were connected to the lan. Now I decided its time for upgrade. Bad idea. Installed Mandriva 2006 download version, and it looks in my section hardware support has got worse not better. Printing works locally, even though it works very slow especially for graphics. Over LAN it is hit and miss, and printing anything more sophisticated than simple text file can take hours. Scanning just plain does not work. On occasion I have managed to scan page or two on very slow res but then it just dies. Currently all I get is error message from xsane "Document feeder out of documents" (it has no document feeder and xsane settings say its flatbed so where it get this error beats me. What annoys me most is that I cannot get consistent responses. It sometimes works one way, then the other way. Today one error message, tomorrow different. I think maybe something is wrong with USB? Or printers own software? How to start diagnosing this? Wahur

    Oracle Express

This was my own first thought as well. But there is no firewall installed - this box is on a very slow wireless dialup, can be considered non-networked for most purposes. /etc/hosts.allow and hosts.deny are both empty, containing only some comment lines. So this should pose no problem. I would ask again - maybe msec? Because I hate that bitch, it has caused similar "magical" problems many times before and it therefore is my usual suspect for most problems ;) And if so, how can I diagnose it? Wahur

    Oracle Express

I wonder if anybody has already tried out Oracle Express? Tried to install it on Mandrake 2005 LE yesterday. Had to install Fedora libaio rpm as well but then everything went more or less smooth. Two exception were: It appears I have less memory on that box than I thought (and than Oracle wants, only 217Mb) but installation continued seemingly without probs, it is also compensated with about 800meg swap; second, menu items for Oracle were not created (which I put on using non-supported distro). Link for getting started pages on the desktop appeared OK. All conf scripts run OK. But when connecting to http://localhost.8080/apex I get connection refused. The process is running, I can start and stop it on the command line or via MCC (although MCC shows it as stopped, even if it just started it). Listener is there and listening (I did /etc/init.d/oracle-xe status and it responded normally). No firewall configured - I am on dialup. Well I know that running it on a non-supported platform leaves me on my own but maybe, just maybe somebody has already some experience to share or bright idea to try. Maybe msec, my old enemy? Firewall that I did not know that was hidden somewhere? Wahur
  18. It does :) Eehhh... guys, dont use Mandrake! You can use it for years, set up and admin servers or small corporate networks successfully... and still not have a clue how that thing works :P Just look at me...
  19. Its exactly as the description says. My home desktop just got 2005LE installed (there was 10.1 Community previously, I did clean install on a new partition, i.e 10.1 is still there), everything works more or less. If I do shutdown it shuts down just fine, except for the last bit - powering the box itself down.
  20. Thanks devries! Everything solved now. 1. Lowered PCM and the quality of sound is quite normal now. 2. Because I have (almost) no network at home I had no access to alsa documentation. So I had to experiment. After some poking around I found that after unmuting "External Amplifier" (just "External" in alsamixer) sound came out of laptop speakers loud and clear. External amplifier I have always associated with big stacks of hardware that music freaks or musicians have and use. Never in earth would I think that something like this is hidden somewhere inside my laptop (and actually used to produce the sound). :D Hope it helps some others with the same prob!
  21. You were actually almost right :) What I could not here in the office, I could later at home - namely that I do have sound. Almost. I cannot make out any sound from laptop speakers even though it might be present. I hear faint sound, near the limit of being hearable at all, from headphones. And if I plugged small speakers to the same headphone plug, sound was as loud as it normally should be. Only the quality was quite horrible, crackling like a radio under weak coverage.
  22. Ohh, spare me :D I totally agree that Mandrake is not the best distro to learn things but I have learned THAT much since Mandrake 8.0 Right, it does. So does Harddrake. But it still does not work. I did urpmi urpmi, then urpmi --auto-select --auto, then urpmi kernel and chose 2.6 multimedia Aha. That was not done. did it now, there was only one - sysctl.conf. It sounds important, but is it something relevant to our current problem? Also, to keep you entertained :) I followed devries advice to install new alsa stuff from thac repo. Now things changed a bit. /sbin/lsmod says: snd_intel8x0 33472 0 grep sound-slot /etc/modules.conf says nothing /sbin/fuser -v /dev/dsp says nothing (previously it said that this file or folder does not exist) /sbin/chkconfig --list alsa says alsa 0:ära 1:ära 2:peal 3:peal 4:peal 5:peal 6:ära where ära would mean something like off, peal would mean something like on. So it does not give me errors anymore, but it does not give me sound, either. Been through mixer/harddrake routine as well, nothing. Had to uninstall alsaconf as it would conflict with Thacs stuff.
  23. Not a clubmember. And in a near future cannot become one. Otherwise would have done clean install for sure. And I do not think upgrading was a problem - even though I did not do an extensive testing at least system sounds did not work in 2005LE as well. And while I have done various Mandrake installs to different computers since ver 8.0 I still have not seen one where sound would work out of the box. And finally, while I have seen lots of people with problems related to the same module in this forum and elsewhere, not many have managed to solve their situation. Advice given is concentrated on checking if channels are not muted then checking hardrake settings (which are OK almost always) then trying alsaconf and switching around kcontrol settings . Wash, rinse, repeat. Without any explanation why would all this mucking around make any difference. And finally, if nothing helps, reinstall . This last option has become popular lately as Linux installation is so easy. And then we laugh that Windows always wants to reboot... This is called bug my friend. Maybe one that comes up in some rare condition, but it is still bug. And, as in most cases with Linux, there is probably not-so-difficult solution to it.
  24. OK, a bit more digging done. I noted that lsmod shows module snd_intel8x0 being loaded there are also number of other modules starting with snd_ while harddrake says it should use snd-intel8x0 such a subtle difference. So maybe its about wrong module name? am I on a right track? If yes then how to repair it? Ahh, and btw it is not 2005LE cause I actually did immediate urpmi upgrade to 2006
