  1. Ndiswrapper doesn't work with my 3com usb adapter. I get "Hardware present, software present", but the driver is not loaded. The driver is in the right folder, but it just does NOT work. Solution: Peck a hole in the ceiling and go back to fullwired networking. That should do it.
  2. OMG! I just learned that the windows filesystem is read-only when you're using linux. That's why I'm having so much trouble installing ndiswrapper. Well, I keep learning every day now... Learning by doing!
  3. Oops... I forgot to say, I've got a GeForce 6800 GT, and I'm trying to install the driver for this card. That's easier said than done. The driver install ask to download "kernel updates", or something like that, that's why I try to get the usb wlan adapter to function...
  4. Installed as root yes. As you can see over, I tried to run iwconfig with just the prism2_usb module loaded, but drakconnect I've never heard of. Maybe that will work. But why do I get an "Read only filesystem" error? If in now should uninstall ndiswrapper, is this the way to go: #urpme ndiswrapper And then maybe editing the "modprobe.conf" file for ndiswrapper settings. Forgive me if I mix things up a little, I'm completely new to linux.
  5. Ok, starting to think over the whole linux thing. You know the thing about windows... you know, it just works, it's a great advantage. I'm starting to get a little bit sick and tired of this linux thingy just being all big and bad! Uninstalled the old ndiswrapper using urpme, edited the files using vim, all looked very good. Started to install the new and improved ndiswrapper, only to get an error message saying "Could not write dir, read only filesystem". WTF? Please help. This linux thing is starting to get close to the drain...
  6. Thank you! I'll read it thoroughly. The little pieces of knowledge I've gathered so far about linux has give me new motivation for further reading. Always funny to learn new things!
  7. Ok, but I never removed the first one, nor installed the new one. I just used the one that was installed with mandrake. I don't get why the ndiswrapper module is loaded, but not responding. 'Cause that's what's happening right?
  8. I'm TRYING to install mandrake 10.1 community, and have learned that ndiswrapper is the module to use with my 3com wireless usb adapter, to get online so I can find the NVIDIA drivers and get the graphical interface up and running. The problem is that I can't use the ting!? Why? I issued some commands with the following results: # lsmod | grep -i ndis ndiswrapper 67360 0 #lsmod | grep -i prism prism2_usb 73828 0 p80211 31440 1 prism2_usb usbcore 103172 5 prism2_usb, ehci-hcd-uhci-hcd #iwconfig lo no wireless extensions eth0 no wireless extensions #ndiswrapper -bash: ndiswrapper: command not found You see? I can't install my 3com driver without ndiswrapper (according to the ndiswrapper hardware list), and ndiswrapper does not work. Thanks for all help. And remember that this is my first linux distro, so keep the information on an extremely newbie level.
  9. Thanks for all help, I believe I'm beginning to understand how it works now. I've browsed the web all day reading different helpforums, the linux community (and mandrake) is really big! Bet my next problem occurs with installing my 3com usb wireless network adapter, but I found a guide here wich I think could work: Mandrakeusers - WLAN Any comments on that guide? Hope I can get this to work, I really want to try out Linux for real.
  10. Yep, that's the guide I used. I believe the problem is during the "urdpmi kernel-source" command. The "urdpmi binutils" command returns "Already installed", but the "urdpmi kernel-source" command requires the installation dvd. I load the dvd, but then it returns "Wrong signature" (or something like that), and can't install whatever it's suppose to install (get the meaning of novice, right? :D). When I proceed to install the driver I get an error message saying something like "wrong driver/kernel source". I've got an AMD Athlon 64 processord, but I'm using Mandrakelinux 10.1 official, (not 64-bit). What driver should I use, I've downloaded all. :) Am I suppose to download a new kernel-source? I've read a little bit about linux, but this kernel-source thingy has completely passed my mind. Sorry if my information is a bit inadequate, I'm at work now and playing on pure memorisation. :D Thanks for all help!
  11. Ok people, I'm totally new to linux, so please guide me here. I've just installed Mandrakelinux 10.0 (download), and having trouble installing the nvidia driver. I have no idea what to do in linux (mere basic commands), can somebody tell me exactly how to install this driver, so I can learn linux from within the GRAPHICAL desktop? This guide including whatever kernel sources to be downloaded, everything. I, like I said, have a fresh install of mandrakelinux 10.1, that's it. PS: About editing the files, please just tell me what files to edit and what to write, what kernel source to download (?). I think I can figure out how vi works, so the editing itself should be fine.
