I believe my systemis using Alsa. If I go to start--> system--> configuration--> KDE--> sound --> sound system and look at the hardware tab, I have ALSA selected, not OSS. Modinfo shows:

Lsmod shows snd modules loaded, not sound, which is the OSS module.
I have been trying to understand this for some time. I think the snd module is loaded during boot (because of the modules.conf file) after the system tries to load it because of the check in MCC. I found some threads indicating Alsa will not always load, and my guess has to do with the fact my sound is on board, and is not a PCI card. It is treated as if it is a ISA card, probably through the PCI-ISA bridge hardware. This is my best guess at this point.

I have a Compaq system. The sound hardware is on the system board, not a separate sound card. It is a ES1869. I ran alsaconf and have sound working. Here is the output from lsmod.

If I go to MCC --> System --> Services. I have Sound and Alsa 'x'ed to start on boot. Sound shows it is running, but Alsa shows as stopped.
I found several threads talking about this, but in each case their sound was not working, mine is working. I can play mp3's, audio streams, CD's etc. using xmms or amarok.
Modinfo tells me the 'snd' kernel module is in fact Alsa. Why does it show as 'stopped' under Servieces?
This is Mandriva 10.1 Offical with a stock kernel. I don't know enough to change the kernel yet.

AussieJohn, Thank-you for the response. I have managed to get mjpegtools installed. I downloaded the mdk.rpm and used urpmi to install it locally. The insteresting thing I don't understand is urpmi asked me if it was O.K. to get the pre-req's, ( I undestand the pre- req's) I said yes, and it downloaded them without a hitch, and every thing is now installed. Why this worked now and not before is what I don't get.... Purple smoke and mirrors I guess.

I've been using linux for about three years now, and only work with windblows when one of the kids or the wifes machines is mucked up.
Urpmi has worked well for me. This is one of the few times Ihave had a problem with it. I was trying to follow the How_to on this forum to download and replace key files. Linux is a hobby for me. If something doesn't work, it is just a little challenge to learn something about.

I have been trying to install mjpegtools-1.6.1-7mdk.i586.rpm on Mdk 10.1 Official. There are 3 other rpm's as pre-reqs. They are : libquicktime0-0.1.3.9-1mdk.i586.rpm, libmjpegtools1.6-1.6.2-7mdk.i586.rpm, and libdirectfb0.9_20-2mdk.i586.rpm.
I have had urpmi set up for some time and not had problems installing other software. Most recently I installed mplayer without a problem.
Here is the error message I get.
There is a problem with the installation: retrieving failed, curl failed: exit with 7 or signal 0 unable to install package... ( it then lists the packages I'm trying to install.
I followed the link https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=23154 . I have tried to no avail to make sure I have the correct keys installed. I'm not positive I did what is required. In particular the step

The secibd line is confusing to me. Just what does "> gpg --list-keys' do? How do I verify I have done what is required? The last line is also confusing. If I go to /root/.gnupg and look at file pubring.gpg I can see information in this file. Once again, how dod I know it is correct?
Also, I have looked at /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg. I'm not sure how to verify I have the correct information in this file. Here is mine.

I'm concerned the last line of each entry, for example : with_hdlist: hdlist.cz is not as shown in article 23154. Should I add the ./ in front of hdlist.cz ???

I have done a lot of forum searching on this topic. Nothing so far has allowed me to be able to click on a link ( a URL ) in Evolution version 2.0.3 and launch a web browser. (firefox)
I have both KDE and Gnome installed. I have a lot more experience with KDE, I still feel a little lost in Gnome.
I have tried to set Firefox as the default browser in KDE. Clicking on a URL in Evolution does nothing.
I saw on one of the posts, instructions to go to prefered applications in Gnome, and set the prefered browser there. I tried, but I can not get it to stay changed. It shows Epiphany as the web browser. There is a drop down button, but only Epiphany is listed. Is there some way of listing more browsers?
If I click the Custom Web Browser button, and point it at firefox, click close, and go back and look, the thing will have gone back to the button that points to Epiphany.
I'm missing somthing, can any one point me in the right direction?

I ran urpmi.removemedia -a. This was after installing XMMS form servers, and it does not work, it closes with a segmentation fault as soon as I ask it to play a MP3 file. Ararok can play the files. This is MDK 10.1 Official.
I could not get it to install from the install CD's. I got a message saying "update media". That does not work for the removable CD's for me. I did the remove of all media. I want to add just the removable install CD's, install XMMS, and then add back in the remote sources.
When I try to add local removable CD's I always get a message indicating it can not find the hdlist.cz file. I have used the media manager and urpmi.setup script and the result is the same.
Is there a how to somewhere? I have found lots of Howto's for remote media adds, but nothing in the doc on how to add local media ( that works ). This has got very frustrating.

I have done some more research. My compaq system has a ES1869 (ESS Technologys) sound chipset installed on the system board. According to the ALSA sound site, the chip set has a driver; snd-es18xx. I have it on my system.
If I look at MCC --> System --> Services, ALSA is stopped. If I try to start it, it does not start. I believe this is why "alsactl store" does not work.
Since I am not a sound ( or Linux expert ) can some one tell me would I be better off with ALSA or OSS?

I didn't see your lsmod output. Sorry. You're not using alsa but oss. Load the alsa module (starts with snd-xxx) in the MCC. Close all sound applications, including kmix in the systray, when you do this.
I went to MCC --> System --> DrakeXservices but I don't see anything called snd-xxx.
Is this a kernel module that I need to "insmod" ? If yes, how do I track it down?
There isn't anything else (that I can find) in MDK 9.2 MCC to do with sound.

Try 'alsactl store'.
That gives the same results.
[root@sluggy cliff]# alsactl store
alsactl: save_state:1061: No soundcards found...
Im not sure what this may have to do with it, the sound is not a separate card, it is part of the system board. The system is a Compaq Deskpro P3 500Mz system.

I am running MDK 9.2 and have had sound working for a long time. I want to be able to store Kmix settings and restore them. I can not get the store to work. With this command :
alsactl -f /etc/asound.state store I get the following error : alsactl: save_state:1061: No soundcards found...
I had a look through the forum, but have not found a solution. From the man page it looks like I have to specify a <card # or id> . Where do I get a card # or an ID from?
Lsmod shows the following for sound :

I had a look in MCC, but there is nothing there that helped, at least not that I recognized. After running alsactl, I do not have a file created called /etc/asound.state. I believe that is the default file that should be created.

Well, it took me almost a month to get my HP3200C parallel port scanner working on Mandrake 9.2. Here is a link for anyone else that has one of these. http://umax1220p.sourceforge.net/index.html Note the UMAX1220P is the same scanner, I guess HP had Umax make it.

I have been trying to get Popfile running. I installed it using urpmi. When I try to connect to http://127.0.0.1:8080 I get
I get the same error message when tryijng to connect using http://localhost:8080. From what I understand, after connecting, I shoudl be able to configure the bucketts.
If I do a 'chkconfig --list' i get the follwoing line:
popfile 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off
So, it appears to be enabled for run levels 3, 4, and 5.
If I do a 'popfile stop' the last few lines show:
