  1. Thank-you for your response. Here is what I have done since my last post.

    Under 2006 I re-installed the kernel kernel-i586-up-1GB-2.6.12.31mdk using the GUI interface, not command line. I did not see any error messages. It installed like any other application.

    I booted back to Mdk 9.2 since that system controls lilo. I edited the lilo.conf , saved and ran lilo command, all as root. I didn't see any error messages, so I tried booting using the copied and edited entry for the new kernel. It loads only as far as the "Linux Free" blue screen. I left it there for several minutes, it just stays there.

    I had to hit the power button, until it powered off. I can boot to the old kernel, and I'm sure I can still boot to 9.2.

    I still think the problem has to do with the install of the kernel. Here are the files I have the 2006 /boot directory.

    ls -l

    total 5132

    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Mar 17 14:17 config -> config-2.6.12-12mdk

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 71299 Sep 9 2005 config-2.6.12-12mdk

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 71358 Mar 2 13:15 config-2.6.12-31mdk

    drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Dec 26 2005 grub/

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 283534 Dec 26 2005 initrd-2.6.12-12mdk.img

    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 Dec 26 2005 initrd.img -> initrd-2.6.12-12mdk.img

    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 Mar 17 14:18 kernel.h -> /boot/kernel.h-2.6.12-12mdk

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 695 Dec 26 2005 kernel.h-2.6.12-12mdk

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 254766 Dec 26 2005 message-graphic

    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 Dec 26 2005 System.map -> System.map-2.6.12-12mdk

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 639316 Sep 9 2005 System.map-2.6.12-12mdk

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 647155 Mar 2 13:15 System.map-2.6.12-31mdk

    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Dec 26 2005 vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.6.12-12mdk

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1608520 Sep 9 2005 vmlinuz-2.6.12-12mdk

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1620450 Mar 2 13:15 vmlinuz-2.6.12-31mdk

    Note, I did not get a file called initrd-2.6.12-31 or kernel.h-2.6.12-31mdk, they just are not there. I think this is my problem, but how do I get them to install?

    For completeness, here are the lines I altered in lilo.conf. I copied and pasted the first 7 lines, and edited them.

    image=/mnt/mdk10-2/boot/vmlinuz

    label="Mandriva-2K6"

    root=/dev/hdb2

    initrd=/mnt/mdk10-2/boot/initrd.img

    append="resume=/dev/hdb8 splash=silent sr0=ide-scsi"

    vga=788

    read-only

    image=/mnt/mdk10-2/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.12-31mdk

    label="Mandy-31mdk"

    root=/dev/hdb2

    initrd=/mnt/mdk10-2/boot/initrd.img

    append="resume=/dev/hdb8 splash=silent sr0=ide-scsi"

    vga=788

    read-only

    I think what I need are those two files, and then edit lilo.conf uner 9.2 and re-run lilo.

    I need to change the initrd.img ( sym-link) file to point to initrd-2.6.12-31mdk.img

  2. I am trying to install a new kernel. I ran the folowing command :

    urpmi kernel-i586-up-1GB-2.6.12.31mdk
    I saw an error 21 at the end of the install.

    I went to the /boot directory, not all files the new files were there. I did not have a initrd-2.6.12-31mdk.img file.

    I know I have to have one. I believe the source of my problem deals with the fact I have a triple boot system and two hard drives.

    From what I have read, the install of a new kernel is supposed to update the sym links for 'vmlinuz' and 'initrd'

    The sym links did not get updated to point to anything new, they still point to the old files.

    vmlinuz points to vmlinuz-2.6.12-12mdk and initrd.img points to initrd-2.6.12-12mdk.img. After I installed the new kernel, I had a new file vmlinuz-2.6.12-31mdk but no new file for initrd-2.6.12-31mdk.img.

    I ran urpme and removed the new kernel. ( Current state of the system ). 2006 boots with the old kernel.

    This system boots from lilo installed and controled by an older MDK 9.2 system. Lilo is on the MBR of hda. MDK 9.2 is on hda6, hda1 and hda5 are Win98. My Mandriva 2006 system is installed on hdb2. There are more partitions, but the system I think are the important ones.

    Also from what I have read, an install of a new kernel is supposed to update /etc/lilo.conf. The install, does not find it since it is on /etc on hda6, not /etc on hdb2.

    Is there a way to install the updated kernel using urmpi?

  3. I have never updated the kernel since I install Mandriva 2006. Right now uname -a shows:

    Linux sluggy 2.6.12-12mdk #1 Fri Sep 9 18:15:22 CEST 2005 i686 Pentium III (Katmai) unknown GNU/Linux

    This is the stock kernel. I looked at the Advisories, and they list 12 choices for a kernel upgrade. It is not at all clear to me which package I should install. This is the list :

    I know I don't want the source, or ones for xen, but it still leaves about 5 choices.

    How do I know which one to pick? :wall:

    Do I need the one marked kernel-BOOT or just plain kernel, or i586 version?

  4. Is the loopback interface up? You can check with this command:

    /sbin/ifconfig

    This is what mine looks like.

  5. :lol2: Fixed it! Here is what did it...

    To be more precise:

    - Change fle /etc/security/limits.conf

    Line:

    @audio - rt_priority 50

    Into:

    @audio - rt_priority 100

    A big Thank-you to scarecrow and lexicon for your help.

    Scarecrow, I followed the instructions in the thread you posted, as above. I had to boot the system. I can only guess limits.conf is read somewhere during the boot processs.

  6. I have libwxgtk2.6-2.6.1-1mdk and xwGTK2.6-2.6.1-1mdk installed. Those are the rpm numbers. I'm not sure how to check the version directly form the program code. It appears to me as this is version 2.6.1.

    Not usre if this is significant or not. When I run Audacity from a terminal window as a user, and it crashes, I see this message posted back to the terminal window.

    PaHost_WatchDogProc: cannot set watch dog priority!

    PaHost_WatchDogProc: killing hung audio thread!

    Killed

    What is "WatchDogProc" ? Is this part of the problem?

  7. I checked out the packages I had installed. Audacity was file audacity-1.2.4b.2006.SoS. The other three packages I have are the same as Lex has recommended. I updated my media, removed the entries that got me the SoS packages, uninstalled 1.2.4b and installed audacity-1.2.3-4mdk. The results are still the same. Audacity crashes as soon as I press the Play button.

    BTW, this is the version I started out with, it has consistently failed on my system.

  8. Do other programs run OK with OSS selected as main driver? ( snd_pcm_oss)

    Yes, I ran Xmms and Bmp using snd_pcm_oss. Both applications play sound using the oss support. I was unaware I could do that.

    I had strace installed. I ran audacity from my user, and traced it. The trace produced about 3.3 meg of trace file. I had a look through it, but I must admit I don't know what I'm looking for. I did a search on the word 'error' and found about 5 instances of the following:

    access("MARK:	 change_folder_and_display_error start file:///dev", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
    access("MARK:		 gtk_file_chooser_default_update_current_folder start file:///dev", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
    access("MARK:			 check_is_folder start file:///dev", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
    access("MARK:			 check_is_folder end file:///dev", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

    Not sure if this is significant or not. It is a long ways before the program closes.

    Can you give me some idea what to look for?

    I also ran audacity from another user I have on the system. Lex suggested I create a new user. I did not this time. It fails the same way from another regular user. If it proves anything, I can make a new user, and post the results.

    Thank-you for the help.

  9. Mandriva 2006. I installed Audacity 1.2.4b via URPMI. I had also installed 1.2.3 with the same results. If I try to run it as a regular user, I can load a .wav file or a .mp3 file. As soon as I press play, it crashes. It runs fine as root.

    That leads me to believe this is likley a permissions issue. Here is waht I have tried.

    I made sure my sound system is working with all other apps, XMMS etc. I turned off system sounds, as suggested in other posts. I'm running KDE, so Arts is disabled.

    I'm running ALSA and my sound card is on the system board, it is an Ensoniq chip set. lsmod | grep snd shows:

    lsmod | grep snd

    snd_seq_dummy 2532 0

    snd_seq_oss 31136 0

    snd_seq_midi_event 5696 1 snd_seq_oss

    snd_pcm_oss 48960 0

    snd_mpu401_uart 5664 1 snd_es18xx

    snd_rawmidi 19616 1 snd_mpu401_uart

    snd_seq_device 6828 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_opl3_lib,snd_rawmidi

    snd 46116 15 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_es18xx,snd_pcm,snd_opl3_lib,sn

    d_timer,snd_hwdep,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device

    soundcore 7008 2 snd

    I added myself to the 'audio' group. Still fails. I changed the temp directory to my home directory. ( saw this in another post giving problems). Still fails.

    Checked the permissions of /dev/dsp/. Here is what it is set for.

    ls -l /dev/dsp*

    crw-rw---- 1 cliff audio 14, 3 Jul 11 14:36 /dev/dsp

    I also installed watchdog, this is the message I see from a command prompt if I launch from there, and then press play.

    PaHost_WatchDogProc: cannot set watch dog priority!

    PaHost_WatchDogProc: killing hung audio thread!

    Killed

    I'm not at all sure why I see this message. I installed watchdog, never used it before. It has a config file I browsed through. I left it as it ariginally installed. BTW, I saw the same message before I installed watchdog. Took me some time to find out what watchdog is for.

    Any way, I'm lost now as to what I can try to get this going as a regular user. Any suggestions???

  10. Banjo,

    Any updates? Have you got Audacity working yet?

    I've been following this thread, hoping you would post a fix. I'm trying to get it working also, and no luck. I joined the Audacity forum. It seems you need to run Audacity on a lot of distros using aoss, this is a oss wrapper. I installed it on my Mandriva 2006 system, but no music yet. I can load a wave file, and soon as I press play, it crashes. All I get in the lauch window id:

    PaHost_WatchDogProc: cannot set watch dog priority!

    PaHost_WatchDogProc: killing hung audio thread!

    Killed

    This is after I launch Audacity with command 'aoss audacity' load a wave file, and press play.

    Sound on my system works for other apps. I disabled System Sounds. Seems Audacity can not live with that enabled on lots of systems.

    Well, I'll keep plugging away, hope someone out there can post success with a working config, or give us some idea on how to trouble shoot this mess...

  11. I have been trying to get freenx to work with NoMachines nxclient for about a month, without any success. I have freenx installed on my Mandriva 2006 system. I have Ubuntu installed on an old laptop. I have the client installed on Ubuntu, however I can not get it to authenticate with any keys.

    I did some reading, and decided to try to get the nxclient to connect locally first, using 127.0.0.1. Over time I have installed and removed and reinstalled freenx on Mandriva using URPMI. I had installed nxclient-1.5.0-141.i386.rpm, and it launched without problems. Through my continued attempts to get this thing going, I deleted the directory for the client. Dumb I know. :wall:

    I downloaded the client again, but I can not get it to install with the following command : rpm -ivh nxclient-1.5.0-141.i386.rpm It reports it is installed. If I try to uninstall it, rpm reports it is not installed. The client won't run, infact 'locate nxclient' only finds the rpm file.

    Is there a way out of this box? As I understand it, there is a rpm database that keeps track of installed rpms. I guess I've messed it up.

    Second question, is there a .mdk package for the nxclient? ( my guess is no, since NoMachine owns the code ).

  12. Thesonic1,

    Not sure if you have sorted this out or not. Since I'm trying to get NX client to talk to the server, I was browsing. I can shed some light on the above suggestions.

    there is a utility try nx then tab

    This is a linux command line thing. If you type nx and press tab, the system will list all known commands that start with nx. From the list you can pick the exact spelling of the command you are looking for. I know you are on windoze, so the command you are looking for to re-generate the nx client key is nxkeygen. ( At least that is what it is called on linux.) I don't have it install on windoze, so the name may vary there. Try it and see what happens.

    As for testing ssh, you will need a client ssh program installed on windoze to try this. If you Google for ssh client, you will find a long list of applications for this purpose. The reason is simple enough. NX uses ssh to securly connet to a server. SSH needs to work first, before NX can do its thing. So, if necessary, install a client, and try to connect to your server. If that works, then any connection issues you still have are in NX. If it won't connect, you need to fix that first.

    Hope this helps.

  13. I have been working on this for some time without success. I did a clean install on an old Compaq laptop, 333Mhz with 64 meg of ram, and a 40 gig hard drive. This machine had been running Mdk 9.2 for about two years, and was stable.

    I installed Ubuntu, and it loaded without problems. I could not get the sound to work, and could not find any help, so I thought I would take my Mandriva 2006 CD's and install. During the install, I saw a warning about being low on resources. I continued the install, and all seem good until I reboot. Then I see the following:

    'mount: error 6 mounting reiserfs flags notail' The system retries twice more without the flags, but does not mount the file system. The last line reports 'Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.'

    What I have done: If I boot the system with Knoppix, I can mount all partitions and read the files. I mounted hda1, the boot partition, and was able to write to the lilo.conf file. As far as I can tell, teh partitions are O.K.

    I tried pressing ESC at the lilo boot screen, and tried 'linux noapic acpi=off mem=64M'. This made no difference.

    Here is the /etc/fstab file.

    /dev/hda1 / reiserfs notail,noatime 1 1
    /dev/hda7 /data reiserfs notail,noatime 1 2

    Does any one know what 'error 6' is ??? Thoughts on what to try next?

  14. Thank-you for the replies.

    First, for what ever reason I can not explain, the gui wizard is now working. I have no idea why. I used it to create a very simple smb.conf file, and I now have sharing working between linux to linux and linux to windoze, yes even windoze to windoze.

    I have some more to do, shares to add, and testing windoze to linux printing. I have that all working on MDK 9.2, so I think I should be O.K now on 2006.

    Once again, thank-you for yoru interest and suggestions.

  15. I have been editing the smb.conf file for some time, and I'm having many problems connecting, from either another linux machine, or widdoze. I though I would try the wizard to see if I could get things working with less time spent. I was surprised the wizard would not start. I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced the problem.

    I have swat installed, and I have tried using it as well. I'm getting some confusing results through swat. It status shows smbd and nmbd as not running. If I do a ps aux, I can see they are in fact running. Further one of the problems I have is, form a linux machine I can see the shared folders, but can not see the contents. So, my conclusion, right or wrong was the smbd and nmbd must be running.

    As for updates, I have a practice of running update once a week. I ran it yesterday. So things should be up to date.

    When I installed the package, the widards were described as perl scripts. My guess is I have something wrong in the perl area. BTW, I ran the time server wizard, and it runs just fine.

  16. I have been having trouble getting samba working on Mandriva 2006. I have tried with Swat and Webmin without success. I have it working with Mdk 9.2; this is a multi boot system.

    I read a post suggesting installing Drakwizard, I'm not much of a fan of wizards, but since I was spendig more time than I'd like sorting out my samba configuration on 2006, I though I'd give the wizard a whirle. I used 'urpmi drakwizard' as root to install it.

    When I open MCC, I now have a load of icons to configure things with, including samba. If I start MCC form a root konsole, then the samba wizard, it stops loading with the following message. 'This program has exited abnormally.'

    On the konsole I see the following message output.

    mcc

    root /home/cliff 01:47:41 > atom n° 0 is not a section

    Any thoughts on how to fix this??? :oops:

  17. I can not print a PDF file on my Lexmark 4039 10R printer under Madrake 10.1. I can print the same file on the same printer under my Mandrake 9.2 installation. ie. this is not a hardware issue. I can print test page and can print from other applications on 10.1. I thought it may have something to do with the driver I was using. on 10.1. I now have the same driver on both 9.2 and 10.1, 10.1 still fails.

    The driver I'm using is HP LaserJet Series Cups V1.1 on both 9.2 and 10.1. Here is the text of the error I get on 10.1.

    The MIME type application/postscript is not supported as input of the filter chain (this may happen with non-CUPS spoolers when performing page selection on a non-PostScript file). Do you want KDE to convert the file to a supported format?

    I get a list of converters, none of which work. I have been booting to 9.2 to print the PDF's but that is a pain. I saw some other posts suggesting converting the PDF to PS format with pdf2ps. I think either something is not configured correctly or more likley I am missing something needed to print PDF files.

    Your thoughts on how to fix this?

  18. O.K. I got popfile going to the point where I can connect to port localhost:8080. Here is what I had to do. I had attempted to follow the install instructions to install popfile from the tar archive. That did not work, I cound not get this step to work. " chkconfig --add /etc/init.d/popfile " I then made the mistake of installing the rpm using urpmi. That produced the errors above. Lesson learned... :wall:

    To get things going, I uninstalled the rpm, and then went back through the install instructions and wipped out all the files I had installed from the tar archive.

    Next I installed using the rpm. I can now connect to localhost:8080. :thumbs: Thank-you for the help! :thanks:
