  1. You are quite wrong about Antec (from my personal experience). I purchased a top of the line Antec case with a 400W PS, built a new computer with all new parts. Ran 2 days, gave a slight burnt electrical smell and shut down. PS was DEAD. Called Antec, no worries send PS back (not whole box) and we'll exchange. Been up and running since. Antec stands behind (and on top of) their products. www.antec-inc.com
  2. Told you my question was stupid. My wife was just the opposite until we got broadband.
  3. This is going to be a really stupid question...(with several parts) If your other half is not on line or even on the computer, do you really want to: 1) start the better half's machine 2) Dial up and log in (assuming you have the necessary ID and password) 3) Go back to your machine, open a network connection 4) get your e-mail yadda, yadda, yadda then have to shut it all down when you finish? (I would also think if you are both on-line via dial up, bandwidth is going to be really tight). Just borrow the modem if it's not being used. Cable was too expensive ($60/mo) we canceled when COMCRAP raised prices DSL (SBC-Yahoo) isn't too bad, we have 384K service can't get any higher ($35/mo) Cable/DSL and I assume also with satellite, a simple DSL/Cable router is all you need to allow you both to be on-line at the same time. (and some CAT5 cable, set up was easy, followed Syslink instructions up in 30min). I know nothing about doing LAN between computers...
  4. I have too many good programs that run in WINDBLOWS, which have no equivalent yet in Linux. And a whole bunch that run on my G3 Mac under OS 9.1 At work one guy in my group swears by Corel Wordperfect. Nothing in Linux will translate (though I do have WP8 for linux a wine port). My data acquisition requires WINDBLOWS... But I'm working on it. All my machines except the Mac and 1 windblows machine are dual boot with MDK.
  5. "A Mandrake Linux Forum has been added to LinuxQuestions.org. The forum will be visited by GaelDuval_MDK (Gaƫl Duval) and dalai (JeanDo Lenard). Have fun!" As quoted by the link...this makes me plain mad  What are we (mandrakeusers.org), chopped liver :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:
  6. Why do _YOU_ use linux? To try and wean myself from windows What interests _YOU_ about linux? Stability because it's related to UNIX, Secure because it's related to UNIX, because I can, related to my independence. Why don't _YOU_ use a Microsoft, Mac, or other OS's (including *BSD, etc.)? I use them too. I hate M$ OS but there are some really well written, powerful software packages that I like (which run on M$). I have an old world Mac (G3 upgrade, OS 9.1). For a long time MAC applications for graphics were way ahead of Windblows (did the first version of my web site on a Mac)...but I would need to buy a new Mac to run OS X.x and buy all new software... I can't afford it. What made _YOU_ start using linux? Corel bundled WP 8 with a Linux system, thought this was a good trend, decided to get onboard...then Corel dumped Linux...by chance I tried MDK (free download 8.1), found this board (old one) purchased 8.2, 9.1 and club membership...the rest is history.
  7. Also be advised Evolution (Ximian) 1.4 is available http://www.ximian.com/products/evolution/download.html Pretty slick install, recognizes MDK 9.1...
  8. You have to go through the install routine the first time you start Star Office . Gads, how soon I forget stuff...(meaning the following is from memory...) There will be 2 install options. 1) as if on a network 2.) on a local machine (sorry I forget the exact language, but this should be close enough) Pick the network install (takes abot 5-10 seconds) and you will be able to start SO from the KDE menu.
  9. I am unaware of any such offerings for protector sheets, my Viewsonic was designed with slots in the moitor frame to accept the tabs from the protector sheet. Sorry. (I didn't know either until after I purchased and found it as an option) Also note, young children with pens, pencils or other sharp objects are difinitely incompatible with LCDs.
  10. This has been a weak point in the Mandrake distribution. They have never had a good update routine. One usually does a new install using existing partions, but not formating the /home partition.
  11. I have Viewsonic LCD, Sony Laptop and a Fujitsu laptop. For finger prints they recommended 70% isopropanol and a soft cloth. (if specific LCD cleaning products were not available) Do not use window cleaners with Ammonia. I have used the 70% isopropanol on my Viewsonic, my Sony and Fujitsu laptops without trouble. The screen material is very soft and easy to scratch...do not apply pressure, use a soft cloth (damp with alcohol) and wipe very gently to remove the prints. Allow to air dry. (Paper towels can scratch the plastic surface, if that's all you have, then your touch must be even gentler) Does Hansol offer a screen protector? My particular Viewsonic offered one at extra cost which I purchased.

    Geforce MX400

Total agreement...if you do not currently have an NVIDIA card installed, removing current video card and replacing with an NVIDIA card, trying to boot and then getting the drivers to install...will complicate your life. Download driver set boot to not start x windows shut down install new card boot to command line log in as user, then su <password> cd to where you downloaded the NVIDIA driver package Type "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run" (no quotes) perform any needed alterations to XF86CONFIG FILE per the NVIDIA instructions
  13. How about Amaya? http://www.w3.org/Amaya/
  14. Not great but a start, here are 3 (I can further customize or try to make to your liking) http://tigger.uic.edu/~magyar/soulse.html
  15. Bad URL...did you mean? http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/magic.php I found the problem...there was a period (.) after the "php"
  16. Link to the story: http://apnews.excite.com/article/20030709/.../D7S5P7E00.html
  17. I'm glad it was something simple...happens more often than you would believe...enjoy printing...
  18. I have a C82 and HP 6P (laser) hooked up to my work computer which is dual boot (win98/MDK 9.1)..both installed normally. HP is on the parallel printer port lp0, the C82 is connected by USB...(I forget the designation...plug and forget...that's me) Stupid question...have you checked your cables? If you are using a USB connection try unplugging and then plugging into a different port. Then run printer drake again. If no one else responds by tomorrow morning I will check my configuration at work and see what it says.
  19. Viewsonic VG175, MDK 8.2 and then MDK 9.1, First Radeon 32MB DDR (now called a 7000) Absolutely no problems. Look for monitors that offer a screen protector sheet (this particular Viewsonic model offered one at extra cost, $25). The sheet covers the soft monitor screen to keep fingers and other objects from touching the screen. Finger prints are difficult to remove and must be done carefully to avoid screen damage... I wonder why Laptops don't have these?
  20. I use MDK because of this board and previous incarnations of such. I can get a problem solved or have fun with friends. (the Great DOlson andf JeroenM)...okay Cannofodder and qnr too because of their cool critters (dogs)
  21. Bought a brand new Antec case (for work...building a computer from components), top of the line...ran 2 days when the power supply burned up, got it replaced no hassles...electronics do pass the QC tests but then fail in the field. Mine just shut down...no damage to the components though...I think you'll be okay as well.
  22. Sony FR130 laptop 2000+XP Athlon, 40gig HD, NVDIA something, Windblows XP, MDK 9.1. Could not get MDK to resize the partitions...oh well. MDK has the lion's share and like the others above, no major problems (annoying touchpad mouse problem, but installing a USB mouse fixed that).
  23. Look Here...Does this help? http://www.apcc.com/tools/download/
  24. We would still be with Comcast except: 1.) They said the rate would not change, we called, they had no clue about the switch over 2.) They has us down as paying $42.95/mo instead of $49.95/mo 3.) They raised the rate to $60+/mo 4.) When we cancelled because of the rate increase, the said "But it's only $6/mo" 5.) No we are payin 49.95/mo a raise to $60+/mo is $11+/mo the way we count. 6.) "Oh" 7.) "Well, we'll give you 3 months at $29.95/mo" 8.) No 9.) "Well if you get cable TV it will be less..." (must be fuzzy logic...we watch a max of 2hr of TV/week) 10) Hello SBC DSL
