When I tried to install the game it was installed into /usr/local/games by default. I was then asked for the root password (I don''t have one) so I have to run 'kdesu konqueror' to access the file. I could have tried to install in into /home/rowan/doom3 but was unsure about the link path so chose the default. Thanks Greg. Unfortunately doom3 was still unplayable - the game was still so slow. It was causing so much friction here at home that I have reinstalled 2006. I am not the only one who likes to play games. Now I find that I am unable to initialise opengl on 2006. This whole thingis driving me crazy because my version of 2006 is the commercial one that I paid for and it should still work straight away. I retried the Doom3 installation and this time everything went ok. I still had the dos install screen but it now works - sort of. I started to play but the frame rate was so slow that it was unplayable - it seems like one frame every ten seconds. I previously played on 2006 powerpack (commercial) that came with ati drivers and the game really boogied but it seems that my free version of 2008 is only using x11 X.org standard drivers. Is it possible that these drivers are just not up to the task of driving a Radeon 9700 pro graphics card? This is my suspicion. I will now have to try and install some sort of ati driver for my system. I have ben told that I should only consider mandriva rpms because they are not all the same. If anybody can point me towards suitable drivers I will have a bash at installing them. Cheers

I have just installed 2008.0 and I thought that I would install some of my favorite games. When I tried to install both ut2004 and Doom3 (using installers) I got the following response in a blue DOS screen - "You are running a x86 machine with glibc-2.1 Operating system: Mandrake Linux 2008.0". There is also a dos response (yes) etc. Then the installation just won''t go much further. When I previously installed these games in 2006 everything went smoothly. Hello all. I am seriously considering updating my system to 2008 but I need to know : is there a dvd conversion program for 2008? I want to convert mpg and avi etc files to domestic dvd format so I can play them on my home dvd player - my current 2006 installation doesn´t want to know about it. If I can convert on 2008 and also get bluetooth for my cellphone to play ball (for file transfering) then I will happily upgrade. Cheers.

Back again. Firstly AussieJohn thanks for the offer of a dvd or 2007 or 2008. If I decided to take you up on your offer I would need to think a little - I want to keep my home directory intact and only work on the os. My wife just bought me a usb bluetooth with the intention of making life easier - and also more portable. I plugged it in and tried to use my cellphone to find it - it is found but unable to connect. I went into MCC to check that it was detected and it is but it needs configuration. The three sections are: ignore, reset and isoc. I have no idea what parameters to put in these three sections and any advice would be appreciated. PS the bluetooth unit is from Dick Smith Electronics and states that it will work on any system with kernel 2.4.? and above.

Hold everything. I have just got a usb cable, plugged it in and, lo and behold, my 2006 Powerpack does NOT automatically recognise my cellphone. I know that the cable is working because my phone is charging up via the usb connection. Is there some program that I must activate or set up some synchronisation system to make it work ? Thanks

Thank you all. That satisfies my needs and it is as I was expecting. The only other way for me to get photos to my pc is to email them to myself but the cost of that is horrendous - NZ$60 for 6mb. Ouch!!! For $8 I can buy a cable and use it over and over. Once again many thanks.

I want to get a usb cable to allow me to download photos from my Motorola v3x cellphone. What I want to know is: will 2006 powerpack automatically recognise it when I plug it in ? My digital camera is recognised straight away without any prompting but all the usb cables (for my phone) that I have seen come with a cd that is windows oriented. Is anyone able to confirm auto-recognition for my phone? Many thanks in advance.

My apologies - it appears that I WAS mis-informed. I was considering upgrading to 2007 just to run this one program but have now decided not to. I have reinstalled my os (not my home directory), just in case there was something missing etc, but still no joy. So I will just leave it for now - it's not the end of the world. Are you chaps running 2007 or an earlier version ? I am using 2006.

Hello again I have just found out that Devede is a Gnome only program that doesn't work with kde (which is what I am running. I will just continue looking for an alternative. Thanks for the help anyway.

Greg, installing a newer version sounds like a good idea. I have been having so many problems with various dvd converting programmes not working that I am getting just a little annoyed. Will an upgrade from 2006 to 2007 wipe out my ¨home¨ directory¨ or my other saved info like emails etc or can they be left intact and undamaged ? Or must I do a completely new install and reformat from scratch ? - This I will not do !! If anyone can tell me how to upgrade to 2007 or even 2008, without wiping info, then I will gladly do that. Thanks for the words of encouragement Greg. So far I have not been able to locate an old version of devede that I can use - I have found one for debian but I feel unsure about using it. In the mean time I have tried several other ¨supposed¨ dvd conversion programmes and got the following - Dvdstyler only seems to recognise movies that were originally encoded as mpg - ones that I have converted from avi or wmv to mpg are not accepted. Also no instruction manual that I can find. I have reencoded some movies into mpeg2 format but that does not work. Avidemux is even less relaible - it closes randomly for no reason. Tovid is easy to setup but ALWAYS gives an error message about ¨no output file¨. Maybe it is just me having a bad day but I am beginning to suspect that there is something wrong with my installation of 2006. I will just keep trying and we will see what happens. Hi all Thanks for the advice. I am running 2006 Official. I did urpmi for python-cairo and libcairo and got them both installed ok. In the meantime I decided to uninstall what was already installed and start afresh. When I got to the install stage I went su then ./install.sh (as previously) and my system just did nothing - see the following. I am trying to install 'devede' so that I can make downloaded movies playable on my home dvd player but for some reason it won't install. Thanks Surfer I have had a look at qdvdauthor and I would like to know if it is able to insert 'breaks' (for want of a better term) so that "scene selection" can be used - just like on commercial discs. Is it able to do this or what program should I use ? Also I have found that I am not able to use fast-forward on my discs. Any idea how to make it work? Regards

I am trying to write some movies onto dvds but I keep running into various problems. k3b will not allow me to write in session mode onto dvd-r discs but I can do so onto cd-r discs. When I try to write dvd's I get the following answer: Your writer (DVDRW IDE H16X) does not support Incremental Streaming with DVD-R media. Multisession will not be possible. Continue anyway? Is anybody able to tell me why this is so ? I can write in session on dvd+rw discs. Also I am having to convert my movies to mpeg because that is what commercial discs are recorded as - so that I can watch them on my television and not just on my computer. Thank you for your responses. Scarecrow - Because they are just a movie that has been split into 15 parts I call them movie clips ( a movie that has been cut into clips). Also they are NOT rar clips so unrar will not work ( I tried ). So the information that I provided initially was acurate ( I neglected to state that they are not rar files ). I have tried 'cat' but just get 'no such file or directory' - it would seem that, because the title has 2 words that are seperated by a space and start with capitals, this causes the command to only look for the second word - and so I get the following response - cat: Def.wmv.*: No such file or directory. I am currently in the process of trying to install HJSplit but I have hit a snag. I have been able to get it to the stage of being an executable file but, when I input './HJSplitLX' as instructed, I get the following reply - ./HJSplitLX: symbol lookup error: ./HJSplitLX: undefined symbol: initPAnsiStrings Am I missing some file etc ( the libraries were installed first ) ? I have managed to get lxsplit installed but have run into the problem of two sperate words in the file title. I have renamed all the clips but lxsplit tells me that it can't open 001. By the way the first clip is viewable but the rest are not. I since writing all this I have read that file names must be one word only (only hjsplit can handle seperate word names) so I renamed all the clips and suddenly 'cat' worked. The second part of 'cat' was the destination file which must be stated. A couple of traps for young players I reckon. Anyway thanks for the advice and if anybody can help me to get hjsplit up and running I would be most grateful.

I am trying to join a series of movie clips together but I am having no luck. They are titled like this: Abc Def.wmv.001 through to Abc Def.wmv.015 . Krusader tells me that the CRC information file is missing so it can't do the job. I have tried to use the command line but only seem to get 'file not found'. Because these clips are in wmv format I assume that they were slpit on windows. Does being split on windows mean that linux can't join them up again ? If anybody can give me instructions as to how I can join the clips I would be most grateful. Many thanks in anticipation.

I have just had a little play with the scanner on my CX3900 and I can confirm that Xsane works great. You will need to install the following: xsane-0.97-2mdk xsane-gimp-0.97-2mdk and possibly dependencies. The second entry allows 'gimp' to access your scanner remotely so that it can do image altering if required. If that is not needed then xsane will just surfice as a scanner. By the way I am thinking that the Epson is exceptionally thirsty and seems to use ink at an alarming rate compared to other brands. Maybe it is just my imagination but it seems that we will only get about 200 A4 pages of text from a black cartridge. I hope that this information is of use to you. Rowan

I also have recently bought a Epson CX3900 and my choice was also based quite a bit on what was written in Linuxprinting. I was unable to locate the c3805 drivers so I am using C66 ones and they are working just fine for printing. As far as scanning goes I looked at the avasys stuff but I couldn't get it to install properly, I installed an independent scan program called QuiteInsane and it works but it seemed complicated and gave rather poor results. I then installed good old Xsane 0.97 and everything is working great - the results are good, it is easy to use and it is reliable. I hope that this information is of assistance to you.

Sorry about the delay in replying - my job took me away from home. I did as you suggested and just formatted hda5, which appears to be the os directory and everything came back to the way that it was. Hda7 came up as the home directory so I didn't touch that at all. I then VERY CAREFULLY re-input the urpmi update selections and installed 212 updates. I did lose opengl for gaming but I have now cured that and things are almost back to how they were. Just one thing - Should the os kernel and the ati kernel be a matched set or can they be different updates ? I suspect that mine have different numbers and what can I input into a konsole to see details ? Many thanks

I tried to do as you suggested but could not get my system to co-operate. It has been suggested to me that I could use my 2006 insatallation dvd to do a partial reinstall by deleting and re-writing just the one problem partition. Is that possible ? If it is possible is somebody able to walk me through the process ? On the other hand maybe I should download 2007 and just do an update of the whole system. Would an update overwrite all partitions or just update what is necessary while leaving the 'home' directory alone ?? Many thanks
