  1. Let's try that again!!! Hey - it looks like it worked. It is just a pity that the instructions seem a little vague.
  2. Strange - it should be here. Well here goes again.
  3. I was only using .mpg as an example of different formats for the same thing. Anyway here is one of the photos that won't open - it is only 1.18mb. I have checked my gimp preferences and they all seem to be ok.
  4. The photos in question have all been copied to my HD (in my Home directory) and they all open perfectly in firefox, kuickshow, showfoto and konqueror and I believe that they are still in the camera's memory. I have checked other smaller photos from last year and they all opened ok. Just as a matter of thought - how many variations are there for .jpg format. I ask because I have seem various .mpeg and .mpg formats that seem to be different. Maybe it is the camera itself that is the problem - all the other photos were taken on other cameras and, in one case, my cellphone, with no problems. Is it possible that the camera is using a different .jpg format that is not recognised ?
  5. The photos in question are in jpg format as they came from a digital camera. I am using Gimp 2.2.8 and I have not even considered upgrading to a later version - are there any benefits?
  6. I am trying to open a picture in Gimp2 but I am told the 'Plug-In could not open image'. I have previously opened and altered photos of about 200k size but this photo is about 1.5Mb. Is there a size limit for photos in the Gimp2 ? If there is a size limit how can I reduce the size down without losing too much detail ? Cheers ps I am using 2006 powerpack
  7. BINGO. Thanks Greg - that worked ok. Now I just need to find a way to convert the videos to avi or mpeg so they are easily viewable. Medo - I looked at updating to Firefor 3 but decided against it when I saw how many other things I had to update or install. I have not had a lot of luck with bz2 installations so I just decided to stay with what I already have. Several months ago I tried to update my system to 2008 but found that it was a piece of rubbish when I was unable to even configure my desktop graphics - 2006 is far better for me. Thankls for your help
  8. Greg - I am using Firefox 1.5.0.7 and I am running 2006 Power Pack. I think that it might have come standard. Medo - I did as you suggested but what do I do now? I retried the download without success. Cheers
  9. I am trying to install an add-on into Firefox but when I press 'add to firefox' I get a notification telling me that software installarion is currently disabled and to edit my preferences to allow it. I have been through my preferences but have not yet been able to get it to co-operate. Am I missing something really obvious or am I just haveing a bad day - any advice is welcome. Thanks
  10. Hello all. I am trying to install Firefox 3.0.3 on Mandriva 2006 and I am unable to install it. I have unpacked it but am unable to use './configure' etc as it will not accept the usual commands. Is there a new method of installing tar.bz2 files or maybe something I am missing out on? I have searched through many different places and have found nothing to assist me with my dilemma. Mind you there are indications that I might need to update GTK+ and other things to make it work anyway. On the other hand is it availablke as an RPM from somewhere to make life even easier? Thanks
  11. I managed to fumble my way through to get Opera on the K menu and it works ok there. I would prefer not to update Opera at this stage - 9.52 works ok for me. I only have it because Mozilla and Konqueror do not seem to be able to display IE 6 exclusive pages. Many thanks
  12. Hello all. I have just installed Opera 9.52, as an rpm, and it works well but something strange has happened. It is all installed but there is no entry in the browser section of K Menu and so I am having to use konsole to start it. How do I make an entry in the kmenu it get around this minor glitch? Thanks in anticipation
  13. I have just found another option - in the address book - which lets me decide how the receiver will receive emails Maybe I should have set that option to html as well? Go to edit - preferences - composition - send options - text format section. Maybe I should just set everything to html?
  14. I changed the preference to 'in-line' and retried the emails. A couple of them arrived with the text parts ok but the graphice were just large grey squares where the pictures should be - I rechecked and the squares correspond to the original pictures. When I tried to foward the emails a pop-up asked me if I wanted to send them as plain text, HTML or both - I just chose html only and sent them. One thing is that fowards with attachments worked ok but not when the pictures were actually in the email. Maybe this has something to do with it?
  15. I have three choices: of just fowarding them, or fowarding in-line or as attachment. It does not appear to be set to any particular default - I just choose one from the menu.
  16. Hello all I use Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 for my email and I have been sent some humourous joke emails (with pictures) by a friend. My wife wanted copies of them (she uses XP) so I fowarded copies of them to her. The problem is that she can read some of them but others are apparently just blank or have rubbish in them. Some of the emails that I sent her had pictures in the email and others had attachments. Because I just fowarded copies straight to her I can't understand why she can't open and view them correctly. Is anybody able to cast any light on what has happened or why? Many thanks.
  17. Thanks for the advice. I kept trying different mirrors and eventually it worked. I have no idea why the others wouldn't work but now it is ok. Very strange Once again thanks.
  18. Hello all Recently I tried to install a package using urpmi and got a response to the effect that 'plf free' and 'plf non-free' were not available. So I went into MCC, deleted both these entries and tried to use easy-urpmi to install new media entries. In the end I tried about half a dozen different hosts from the list and always got the same response as follows :- "problem reading synthesis file of medium "plf-free" (also for non free) and "unable to update medium "plf-free". Is there a problem with the plf system? I have just tried again and got the same answer again. Any advice or cure will be gratefully received.

    IE6 compatibility

Thanks all for the advice. I have managed to get Opera 9.5 beta 2 to do the trick. I attempted to install a user-agent for my firefox but could not get it to download. John - the person in question is a co-worker who checks all our pays and remuneration etc. I reckon that shw is just 'blinkered' because she only ever uses a windows system all day and maybe just doedn't know what is available out there. I am not going to let it get to me. As an aside I have come across several people who have never heard of Linux and who think that Mac is just another brand of machine that has windows installed on it. A few of them have been a little surprised when I explain the major differences but because these people work for companies they can be rather ham-strung by the type of programs that they need and use - especially if what they need is already available on the market in windows. It is pointless getting new programs written just to change systems but then again maybe there are more programs out there that we just don't know about.

    IE6 compatibility

Thanks Tyme but I tried 2008 and could not get it to work properly on my system. I was unable to configure the graphics and ended up doing three installations in two days just trying to get it to cooperate. So I went back to 2006 Powerpack. The site that I am trying to view is: http://www.mainchain.net It contains details of my pay cheque (work done) and is used by the largest trucking company in New Zealand. If you can tell me what is going on I would be grateful. I suspect that this system is Windows exclusive because an IT person that I have spoken to told me that some systems will only recognise Windows - I don't know if this is correct or not. Mind you one of the office ladies who monitors this system and inputs data etc replied, when I told her that I used Linux, "you should get a modern system". Any advice is welcome.
  21. Hello all. I am currently running Firefox 1.5.0.7 on Mandriva 2006 and I have found a need to use an IE6 compatable browser. Are there currently any browsers out that will allow me to view 'IE6 and above' sites ? I don't want to upgrade Firefox to 2.0 if it won't work in this situation. Many thanks
  22. So, if I understand correctly, the receiving party gets the choice of whether to send the receipt back. This is not what I wanted to hear. I was hoping that it would be sent back to me without their knowledge. Oh well I will just have to try a different way. Thanks anyway.
  23. Thanks Reiver. I have found 'return receipt' in the options menu jast as you said so I will assume that that is what you were talking about. I also assume that the receiving party has no control over this return receipt - they can't block it or cancel it etc and it is sent back to me without their knowledge. This seems to be just what I was looking for. Cheers
  24. I would like to know if Thunderbird has the facility to send me a return message to tell me that a particular email has been opened and read by the reciever. I have been sending emails to a person who says that they have not been getting them but I am beginning to doubt them a little. If the 'email read' return option is available I would like to use it - if only for my own piece if mind. Is anyone able to tell if it is an option and how to activate it. Cheers PS. I am using Thunderbird 1.5.0.7
  25. Thanks all. Greg when I tried XFdrake and used 'test' my system went blank and so I had to reboot my system twice. I also found that XFdrake put resolution at 800x600 with 16 million colours - I originally specified 65,000. I assume that the system knows best. In the end I decided that I don''t have the time to mess about trying to get it set up to actually work so I have reinstalled 2006 and everything suddenly works correctly and at the first attempt. I am currently playing Doom3 and Quake4 in all their glory. I am sorry to waste your time but I just got fed up with all the problems that 2008.0 was causing and I will seriously think twice before I update to a newer version. If I ever do upgrade it will be to a paid-for commercial version and not a free download one. I do have a niggling suspicion that some of my graphics problems might (just might) have been caused by the graphics card selection - 2008 grouped my ATI card in the Radeon group with some other cards while 2006 instantly recognised my card (Radeon 9700 Pro) individually and set it up accordingly. As I said this is only my opinion. There were also some other things that were starting to get up my nose but, as they say, 'it is now history'. PS: I have just done fgl_glxgears as you requested and here are the 2006 results. [rowan@localhost ~]$ fgl_glxgears Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer 3630 frames in 5.0 seconds = 726.000 FPS 3899 frames in 5.0 seconds = 779.800 FPS 5010 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1002.000 FPS 5019 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1003.800 FPS 5025 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1005.000 FPS 5015 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1003.000 FPS 4997 frames in 5.0 seconds = 999.400 FPS Broken pipe [rowan@localhost ~]$ Once again thanks for your help.
