  1. Easiest way to do this is not use the upgrade option, but the install option. Upgrading the packages has caused many headaches. Easiest way IMHO, providing you've created a /home partition, would be to do an expert install, let it keep your existing partitions, and when it asks which partitions to format, choose all the partitions ecept for the /home partition. Leave the /home partition unchecked, that way during format, your /home partition will be saved. When Mandrake finishes installing, you'll have all of your preferences and data saved. On'y thing you'll have to reinstall would be some previous programs that are not on the discs. There are other ways to do this, but this is the one I use.
  2. Providing you haven't upgraded your kernel, you get kernel-source-2.6.3-7mdk. To find out which kerenl you're running, just open kde control panel and it will tell you on the right hand side. But with Mandry 10, the source I believe should already be installed so it may or may not be neccessary.
  3. B4 you attempt to reinstall the driver, make sure you have the nvidia card selected in XFdrake. Maybe not having the right one selected is the source of the problem. If it's already selected, then start your internet connection, drop to runlevel 3, restart the installation process of the driver, when you get that message saying there's no precompiled interface kernel, etc and asks if you want to download it at teh webiste, say yes and it will download it and installation will proceed. If the installaer is unable to find the required file on the website, then it will need to compile the kernel interface for you, for that you'll need to have kernel sources if you don't already have them. You'll know you want them if installation fails during compiling. If that's the case, if you go into your software manager and do a search for kernel-source and you get the one that matches your kernel version. Then once installed, restart the nvidia installer. Install the driver, go back to run level 5 and hopefully should work.
  4. Not going anywhere yet. I've decided to build the rpms for the maintanance release of kde 3.3. Reason being is because there have been many grave bugs found which has caused some people to revert back to kde 3.2. So might as well do it for a better release.
  5. Have you tried changing the location of the cradle to dev/usb/tts/0 or dev/usb/tts/1? More likely it will be located in either one of those.
  6. Defraging is not neccessary in Linux. No need to worry about getting a defrag utility.
  7. Did the files you downloaded end in .iso?
  8. If you are using kde, I suppose just add it to your autostart folder located in: Or if you are using Flux or another kind of WM or DE, add it to your startup script.
  9. Check out this link for making your screensaver into your background.
  10. If you're going to be an asshole, then you're better off not saying anything. It wasn't obvious to him. I seem to remember a few of your posts were about basic issues that's been posted hundreds of times as well. Give the guy a break.

    It happens, lol.
  12. It sounds like to me your user login got corrupt somehow. When you try to log in as a normal user, does it complain about an incorrect password? Try this. I normally don't recommend logging into a root desktop, but do it in this case. Login into kde as root since only that is working. Go into userdrake and edit your username and change the password. It's all prety self explanatory. Log out of the root desktop, and try to log into kde as a normal user. If the problem still continues, log back into a root desktop, go back into userdrake and create a new username. Log out of the root deskop, and log into your new username you created. I am confidant it will work.
  13. There are a couple of ways you can do this. First thing would be to add some ftp sources to urpmi. Please read about urpmi in the faq's. This will explain in great detail about the function of urpmi, adding sources, and how to instal software with it. In summary, those files that Mandrake complained about that are needed are called dependencies and they are required to make some programs work. Urpmi will install the rpm you want to install plus whatever dependencies required. Next, you can either follow the suggestion in the previous post regarding upgrading kde, or you can download the kde rpms yourself from www.kde.org. Create a folder just to store the kde rpms. Then from a console as root type: This will install those rpms in order plus whatever dependencies requried.
  14. Sorry if I am going to go over the obvious things so please don't take offense. We have to start w/the easiest and move up. Could it be you have your cdrom jumpers set wrong (i.e. jumper is set to slave instead of master). Do you have a cdrom and burner? If so, have you tried the other one? Will the Windows disc boot from cdrom or will another pc boot from the Linux cd? It doesn't appear to me an issue with the Linux cd. BTW: How are you guys coping in FL? I use to live there.
  15. I'm not able to duplicate the error and google didn't yield much, but I think maybe when you save the file it is getting overwritten by a back up when you reboot. Can you copy that XF86Config-4 file to say your /home? Do it as root of course. Then make whatever changes required in the copy of that file in your /home directory and see if it gets saved. At least that tells me it is getting overwriten some how and we can figure it out. Or maybe, the driver is actually not installed, in which you may have to get the kernel source to install the driver. I'm judging by your posts you have installed the driver successfully though, but try the first thing I suggested and let us know.
  16. Also themes from kde.org will come with instructions on ow to install them, but I agree to check urpmi first and if you don't find any you like then go with the other method.
  17. Choosing to upgrade as opposed to a fresh install are problamatic with any version.
  18. Strange, and I see you're using Mandy 10. Apperently it is doing some kind of saving. The file with the ~ next to it gets generated when a file is saved. It's a duplicate, a back up copy. Let me see if I can duplicate the error and report back to you.
