I have always had problems getting samba to work well. I am in a wireless home network and I want to share my mp3's and movies, I want to do this from my Mandriva computer. I want these directories to be readable/writable by guests in the network. I want my computer to show up in "Network Neighborhood". After screwing with this file, I gotta come here for help. Well this is my last post because I really don't want to keep this thread at the top, I never though it would get a big reaction. My IP keeps fricking switching because my DSL modem sucks (*kick *kick). Anyways, you might not want to try and do anything to the IP above because it is no longer me, and there is a slight chance that, the IP is someone else who may actually be angry if you delete his system. Just thought I should say that.

"Personally attacked" nah... the troll stuff I kinda found offensive, that truly was not the purpose of my original post. Also I would never troll this board because I quite often get excellent answers from it. I just thought I had enough experience to call this not such a bad idea. I see why the Linspire guys are defending themselves so much. My ports are closed, I have shorewall on, I have a router with not ports forwarded. If thats is not secure enough I will be very suprised as well as angry with my router, shorewall, and whatever process opened a port without me knowing. Oh yeah by the way I'll probably manually switch my IP friday because when my girlfriend gets back in town I dont want her windows box magically disappearing. I only have one computer running right now, and the data HD is disconnected so really, have fun till fri night. (*cross my fingers and hope im right) Hanes

Hi, My ip right now is 216.26.208.148. Please leave port 80 alone as it is not the linux box anyways (its actually a hardware camera server, should be fine) behind a NAT. My servers are very well firewalled and are not on this ip range anyways, they are at work. This desktop has some important stuff and I would be sad to have to reinstall from backups, but I guess thems the breaks. I am not trying to be a troll, I love linux, and I have always hated typing in a pass on my desktop... I haven't had any problems lately, and I doubt I will. By the way I am not a complete idiot as some of you wonderfull people have commented, I have an MSc in Comp Sci with a thesis in Public/Private Key encryption and suprisingly its many vulnerabilities. This is not to brag, I am sure there are many of you with MUCH more experience/qualifications than me and admittedly theoretical knowledge proves little about practical knowledge. Simply browsing this board will find many posts of my many silly questions. But calling me a troll, just cause I made a simple post with my opinion hurts. I think posting how your opinions are different are fine, but insinuating that I am stupid is rude. I know many of people who would never switch to Linux if they had to type in their pass to change their time. Root passless will work for them while still being compromised MUCH MUCH MUCH less than the alternative (Win XP). Anyways my IP should stay the same till my provider tries to switch it (weekly?). If you succeed (I admit its possible) please leave the data alone, but I dont mind having to format my OS to learn the lesson I will check for later this week. Hanes

Hi all, I just removed a password from my root account the other day (passwd -d root) and I feel so free haha! I just wanted to say this because of all the nutso posts I see against this. I avoided doing this for a while but then it occured to me that: a) I run Win XP / Win 98 on most of my machines , they are ALWAYS running as root! At least on my Linux boxes the virus/hacker has to type SU b There arent a lot of viruses running around on Linux (yet) c) there just freaking desktops anyways! I backup important stuff! d) I format my computer quite often anyways to try out different distros e) Entering passwords is ANNOYING, especially for meaningless trivial things like changing the time, adding new wallpapers (into /usr/share/wallpapers, connecting to wireless networks, adding a printer, adding new fonts, loading the control center, and deleting fiiles Anyways if any newbies are annoyed by passwords I wouldnt worry about it, I know you hear tons of people say things like "but you can DELETE ANYTHING", but guess what you can do that with most OS's out there.... I have yet to mistakenly delete my / Obviously my servers have passwords that I change monthly, but thats another story. Even the computers that are somewhat public (ie others use them) I use passwords with... On a related point it would be neat to have a password wizard, which asked the user what he DIDN't want to enter a password for, this way users wouldnt feel the need to remove passwords, which if EVERYONE did it, might encourage virus writers. I have a drive, /dev/sda1 that I mount as /mnt/data (fat32), this drive has worked for a long time, now all of a sudden it is read only for everyone but root. Windows can write to it just fine... I can chown it to the right user, every time I try to mount it right (with umask=0) I still can't get regular users to write to it. Anyone know whats going on? Hanez

Hi, I am a teacher and I am supposed to pick a computer mag. to subscribe to. I want it to be a general mag (not linux only), but it would be nice if it featured some linux articles (5-40%). well yeah I guess. This is my desktop, and I have always felt slow HD speeds. Why? How do I increase the speed? EG when I am copying gigs of music to the HD the computer is mighty slow. When I do it in windows it is noticeably faster.

You can also instal aMSN messenger, works just like MSN, and its in the repositories. Go to a command line, type "su", give your password and type "urpmi amsn". You should find it in the internet category....

Does that mean the hardware is UDMA2? Or is it a setting? Here is another computer (a desktop, athlon 2500, newer computer) and again I really notice a slow hard drive. uh, this is a regular pc. No scsi (no money for scsi drives). No SATA just IDE. I guess I could go software raid... but I would think timed backups are just as good right?

IBM has a weird Bios utility... But I can say I did not find one option that had the letters UDMA in it... so no :) Anyone other tips?

Hi, I have two HD's on a server and I want to back up everything, weekly. I am using the mcc backup tool, but I cannot figure out how to backup EVERYTHING. Should I not bother? (is /etc and /home good enough in case of a crash?). I guess in the other tab I can just say back up /. This is a regular desktop PC (ibm netvista) posing as a server... pretty serious server though that is in use every business day. Also should I be using a different tool for this, or is the mcc one dependable? Hanes

I am talking about feel. It FEELS slow. So if you tell me that windows loads the image before, that makes sense, I guess that is why Windows feels a bit faster... Nevertheless I dont reboot very often, only when I go into windows to play a game then come back...

Wow. I uninstalled KAT, still Konqueor is not even close to explorer. Boot up isn't even comparable to winxp (I dual boot), winxp beats it by about 2 seconds.... Notepad is much faster than kwrite, firefox(xp) has a slight edge on firefox(linux). I'm not complaining, cause I will take the speed hit to legally use the apps I need but... I can't beleive it. Everyone I know who uses Linux, has the same speed issue as me... Only people I have met through this board diasagree. This is really the first time I have considered I might be doing something wrong. PS I have 1 gig swap, 700 megs ram....

hmmmm.... I find trouble believing you guys :( I love linux, i am very comfy with it. But if you guys telling me it is actually faster than explorer then I am doing something serioulsy wrong.

Hi, I have used linux for the last couple of years. Mostly mandriva, I love the distro. Anyways, last month or so I have been using XP, simply because I want to play Star Wars Battlefront 2. But anyways here I am using this OS and slowly all of a sudden I am USING it .... and heres what I notice Mandriva ROX in most categories except speed. I can open up explorer, browse to a file and open it WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY faster then I can in KDE. Why? I know there are other visual managers but most of em are not visually apealling enough or are "weird". Anyways have the people on this board noticed this too? Hanes
