  1. my problems are similar but i have tried changing contrib repositories but the errors persists. ciao!
  2. reads familiar since the contrib and contrib_updates are the ones with the huge hdlists. i also get segmentation fault with urpmq and urpmf. i have also tried changing mirrors but the same result. i wonder if i can mix urpmi and smart? ciao!
  3. this has been a problem since last night. i issued a urpmi.update -a that was interrupted when we experienced a temporary black out (the router died but not the laptop). i resumed it this morning and now when it starts to do the second pass to compute for dependencies it dies due to an out of memory error. i tried rebooting and running the update on its own but the same thing happens. urpmi --update still works but urpmf and urpmq is borked. i already tried removing and re-adding the internet sources but the problem does not go away. any ideas on how to fix this? or is it time for me to start reading about the smart package manager? :D followup question, i dont know if this is related but this has been happening way before yesterday but every call to urpmi.update -a causes my mdv installation to redownload the hdlists/synthesis files even if nothing has changed. is this normal? ciao! 4. if that media is burned from the MDV free version then you can get the sum from any of the mirrors. if that is not the case then you could ask the magazine where they got the source they used for manufacturing those CDs. the caveat just means that if you get a different hash if the installer was burned with padding bytes. if not then the command would return the same hash if the media is good. ciao!
  5. doesnt the tips here work? ciao!
  6. try restricting access to the pan reader executable to only a certain group that your children do not belong to[1] and then removing the execution bit for the others [2]. you could also explore using sudo to facilitate executing it for yourself. [1] chown or chgrp can help you here, just check the manpages as i am not on a linux machine right now. [2] chmod 550 /path/to/executable ciao!
  7. isnt there a ff2.0 package for mandriva? i was thinking about this last night because urpmf is not showing any package that closely resembles the 2.0 release. i already have contrib and 2 plf repos in my installation sources configured properly. ciao!
  8. BLASPHEMER! OFF with y'er HEAD[1]! im with ian here. as long as my linux needs are addressed then google+mub is enough for me. and i still use mandriva on my main machine so it is only logical that i stay here. :) [1] [root@lala]# head Artificial\ Intelligence | cut -f1 > /dev/null ciao!
  9. slowly but surely kiwi grasshopper, slowly but surely. tangent input: its not about the numbers, but the community spirit. i have never been in the ubuntuforums but can it offer the same addictive fix as this board? :D ciao!
  10. ah, i had enough of tikiwiki. i uninstalled it completely. now its either drupal or phpwiki... and for those wondering about the choices, those are the ones offered by my webhost. :) ciao!
  11. personal use. i dumped a lot of information on that wiki but i cant fault paul for decommissioning it since it has been quite some time since i visited it. right now i am aiming to use a wiki to dump some of the interesting stuff that trickles to my inbox. wordpress is not a good vehicle for that. i should really start understanding how drupal works... :( ciao!
  12. ok, i finally got one tikiwiki doc page to load and according to that page it might be a permission problem (as an admin?). i dont have those items in the right hand corner of the screenshot so permissions might be the culprit. lets see if i can do something about it in the demo site... ciao!
  13. since paul has already decomissioned his old wiki and I have a small hosted space I decided to install tikiwiki. the installation was very smooth and i managed to login as the admin. now, the big question: how do i add a wiki? i think i have clicked every possible link and still no dice. i tried using the opensourcecms demo to see if i just messed up the installation and I also couldnt figure out how to do it from there. just to show that i am only dumb and not so lazy, i have visited the tikiwiki site to see if they have guides for idiots but the whole site is too slow. for the meantime i am uninstalling the tikiwiki in my site until somebody is kind enough to point me to the right direction. or maybe i will just try phpwiki. or figure out drupal wiki. or maybe ill just quit pretending that i understand anything. thanks. ciao!
  14. open letter of Novell to the OSS community: http://www.novell.com/linux/microsoft/comm...pen_letter.html interpret it anyway you want it... :) ciao!
  15. i started using linux for a very evil reason, i wanted to teach our new pompous, techie-wannabe network admin a lesson that he barely knows a fourth of what he claims he knows so he should stop flaunting it on my face. ok, so it lasted for 2 days. after that i liked what i can do with linux and as my dependency for pirated software (i live in a 3rd world country, earning almost basic wages since i was just fresh from college) dwindled so i liked it even more. almost everything i can do in windows, i can do in linux so it has been my main system ever since. and i still cherish the distraught look in our admin's face when he as looking for the rogue machines (yep machines, i had a colleague who dualbooted with solaris) in the network. oh and the fact that when a worm infected everybody in the office, my solaris buddy and me were the only ones whistling while continuing to work. ciao!
  16. as tyme said, you have to be root (or superuser) to kill all urpmi processes and remove those files. since you have rebooted then the processes should be non-existing so the second one is the only task that needs completing. if you cant remove those files as root then this might be a bigger problem (but i doubt it). one option would be to go into rescue mode, open a terminal, and then delete those lock files. but i doubt you would need to go that far. you could also try going into single user more (init 1 ?) before going to rescue mode (using the installer discs). ciao!
  17. my bad. i got my process terminologies wrong. zombie processes are those that are waiting exit confirmation from the parent. i was thinking of orphaned processes since gnome-session is the culprit, you migh want to check with the gnome issue list if this is a handling bug. it does not hurt (that much) but this is an issue nonetheless. ciao!
  18. of course. my employer is a ms shop so i dont have a choice on that either. cdbxp is a great app otherwise i will be stuck on the bundled sucky burning suite with the company's external dvd writer. :) my laptop has nero oem but i seldom use it. i prefer using k3b especially since nero mucks up the spaces in the compilation. i found the correct option combination once but when i reformatted it was too much of a hassle to figure things out, plus only my wife uses windows. rebooting to burn something is not very efficient. :) ciao!
  19. i have never tried imgburn but i am using CD Burner XP (dont mind the xp, its a hype thing). granted that cdbxp has not been updated for quite a while but 3.0.1* is very much uasble on my tests. granted that i burn more cds here in the office than dvds. just giving more options but thanks scarecrow on the imgburn tip. :) ciao!
  20. would the pstree help? it should list the process genealogy but since those are already zombies then the parent is already 'reclaimed'. just a thought... ciao!
  21. good. this is the first mandriva installation i have that setup my wireless almost painlessly. i had to use the firmware on a package for another distro (noarch). the ndiswrapper pointed to a dead link so i am not sure why they cant offer the firware on plf? nevertheless, installation was still good in my laptop. ciao!
  22. i have a question on the amulet, will those who dont buy one be handicapped on later part of the game. i know there are some weapons that can only be used if you have a dragon amulet but will there be a time wherein i cannot use any level x weapons without buying an upgrade? i can pay the 19.95 but i dont have a credit card so my options are pretty much restricted. :( ciao!
  23. could be that the mirrors you selected are currently getting hammered due to the latest release of fedora and ubuntu (plus mandriva a while back). try selecting another mirror and see if its the same. i would go as far as suggest a mirror that is on europe or asia so you will benefit from the timezone difference. ciao!
  24. what does the bookmark function do? i spent a lot of time on the lumbermill quest but the whole thing was doggone slow. then it hung when i was battling a seed spitter (or whatever that mario pipe plant lookalike is called) then had to close the page. when i logged-in again i was in the town instead of the bookmark i created when i already cleared half of the plant infestation. bummer... ciao!
  25. while i already have urpmi configured using the easy-urpmi site, i cant make urpmi bypass the installation media even if i have unchecked them in the rpmdrake gui interface. this is a pain if i only need to get <100kb from the disc. :( ciao!
