  1. thanks adamw, i will try scrounging for my usb hdd enclosure and connect a spare cd-rw on it. when you said "mostly work", does that include the crappy realtek wifi card that the original Wind comes with? Btw, this is the second distro that doesnt support booting from disk. OpenSuse aborts the installation since it insists on finding a CD/DVD drive. the only thing going for the aborted installation is that OpenSuse gives out a user understandable error message. ciao!
  2. That is for the Eee PC but I think I will give that a whirl as I am now distro-whoring just to get some wireless connectivity on the Wind. My last resort would be to replace the wifi card, or buy an external dongle. :( The Wind is perfect that my Fujitsu Amilo Pro V7100 is now delegated to be a Windows game machine for my wife. I have a beefed up 10" unit though since I have 2GB on it to allow me to use some Eclipse-based development tools. Right now it is booting mostly in Windows since I use it for work (I am employed in a MS-biased shop) but I am not giving up on my quest to go Linux for those times that I just need a computer. Keyboard is great even with the misplaced function key which doesn't have any effect on my typing speed. I have pretty long fingers but adjusting to the keyboard didnt take long. The trackpad is a little small but manageable. I have oily fingers so my trackpad is not that good to look at right now. Most of the function keys were working when I was using Xubuntu but right now it has the PCLinuxOS minime installed and I haven't really tried testing it much. The weight is perfect since I bring it everyday. The Amilo is breaking my back before since it weighs around 3kg without the brick and the backpack. My only gripes (which might be Windows related) are that I cannot leave it downloading overnight since I will always find it rebooted in the morning, and if Windows hangs and I force it to shutdown then it sometimes fails to boot up unless I first visit the BIOS menu. ciao!
  3. I already tried with the 2009 beta and rc1 but didn't get far. I already logged a ticket but based from an earlier comment from adamw, i dont think they have a wind available for testing. :( ciao!
  4. i only have one hdd and one external for backups. and i also backup to dvd so except for preparing for possiblities of filling up one partition, i really dont have much to gain from LVM but the experience. :) the examples are good but i was suggesting it can be made better with some highlighting or excerpt for quick references. :) ciao!
  5. nice. i am meaning learn lvm but didnt really have a need for it (single-user, with a separate partition for static (dowloaded) files. one question though regarding the posting, is there an option to highlight portions of the code quote? if not can you create a separate code-quote containing only the commands? sort of a quick reference. thanks. ciao!
  6. i hope this will have a better chance of getting the wifi to work on the msi wind. i am sick of booting into windows just to get some wireless connection. :( ciao!
  7. this has been discussed before and the consensus is that mandriva the company might perish but while the distro serves its purpose and earns the loyalty of a few dedicated geeks then it will continue to survive in one form or another. PCLinuxOS would be a great example. it began its life during the period when some of us ( ) hated the direction the company is going but stuck with the distro because we loved it nevertheless. or was that just me? ciao!
  8. and there is no reason not to be. even if it sounds trivial to some, if its your first time then bask in the elation it brings on being able to do something exciting. :) congratulations! ciao!
  9. nice tip, i think i will add a new root alias tonight: alias update='urpmi --auto-update --noclean --no-install --force && urpmi --auto-select' or something like that. im lazy. ciao!
  10. i think paul[1] references the fact that compiling the mandriva kernel source does not result to an identical kernel that is officially shipped for MDV. or the fact that MDV kernels are already applied with various kernel patches that patching them with something intended for a vanilla kernel may produce unexpected results. [1] i never thought i would defend paul. its much fun to heckle him. ciao!
  11. +1. well i am studying them on and off depending on what i need but it is not uncommon that i bang my head on the table whenever i try something simple and it does not work. having different kind of regex engines does not help, as well as windows and *nix quoting conventions. ciao!
  12. did a quick search for a gui for renaming and found the metamorphose project. the gui seems steep as far as learning curve goes but it might fit for those looking for a gui-based solution. ciao!
  13. precisely, although having too little partition for logs can also break some services who needs that facility. @kyzzar: if it isnt too important topreserve the logs it would be better if you implement a log rotate mechanism that rolls the logs in a weekly/daily basis, compresses them, and/or deletes old logs (say a month or so). you say you don't know why you have that much http logs? do you run a web server on your machine? is it accessible outside? are you expecting heavy traffic on your web site? it might be that you are already being targeted by probes that attempts to find vulnerabilities in your web installation. a sample of your logs (say 1000) might be useful[1]. [1] head -1000 /name/of/logfile > /tmp/first1000lines.txt ciao!
  14. if it were me, i would pay close attention to the contents of /var/logs. a stray application or daemon might be having a logging spree which is filling up your root partition. ciao!
  15. oh well. it was a nice break from the monotony of staring at too many spreadsheets. ciao!
  16. nero has a linux version so that should solve the nrg issue without any workarounds being implemented. :) you asked for support for a proprietary format which unless nero would grant approval will make it illegal and open the K3B developers to litigation, and besides the international standards are already way enough for the needs of the general populace. virtualcd might have licensed the format or just thrown Ahead's IP into the can. if they did the latter then its their call. the true test of being popular is if it is being used outside your immediate circle. my dvd and cd rw drives comes with nero oem but i dont use nrg since i don't want to be locked in. i want to be able to read my iso images by any burning application, in any operating system. heck i use nero as a last resort and prefer cdbxp or deepburner (both are free for personal use) when burning CDs/DVDs while in Windows. and if hq197's post about skipping the first 300 bytes (its id header) is to be taken as proof, the format does not provide any real value from the standard ISO format so why bother? let me hazard a guess, majority of those "popular" nrg images are in that format because the people who made them have nero oem in their computers and/or they don't know any better than to select the default (or only) option. ciao!
  17. a quick search for linux and truncate revealed this links: http://linux.about.com/library/cmd/blcmdl2_truncate.htm which according to pbone.net is either in the ltp package: http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idp...0.i386.rpm.html or in the embutils package: http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idp...1.i586.rpm.html based on the description it does not move the file so it seems like what you are looking for. ciao!
  18.  if that is the case then i must be speed reading again. ill try to post a screenshot when i encounter that dialog windows again. for now i don't want to mess the network setup as it is already working fine (even if bootup seems to be a bit on the long side). thanks. ciao!
  19. that looks like it. so i was redoing a possibly already working installation? ciao!
  20. yeah, i misread the description from the project page about the sentence about SoftMac firmware. but having it on the non-free repository puts me in a catch-22 situation unless i hunt down a network cable and start exploring the cable jungle where my elusive wireless router resides. :) right now i am happy with the ndiswrapper but a rpm would have been nice if the actual message said (you can get it from prism54 OR in the non-free repositories). :) ciao!
  21. i like links. especially when i am here at work and i need to look professional while slacking off. ciao!
  22. me too. my laptop mdv installation was getting old so either this one work or i go ask ianw for distro ho-ing tips. :) and before i forget, the upgrade/reinstall option does not work if the target partition contains the same release. i was getting a perl-like error that has the word uniq in the end. sorry i was already cozy enough pulling my remaining hair while in the bed that i wasn't able to get a pen and paper to write it down. i just restarted the installation and wiped the partitions clean. ciao!
  23. with the two failed installations, I mentioned here that if Mdv doesn't behave properly on the third try then I am putting it in the last place for laptop reentry. Fortunately the third time is a charm and I have a 2008.1 installation with working wifi! :) Good things come to those who are too stubborn to quit. ciao! [moved from Talk-Talk by spinynorman]
