  1. sorry about the late reply... yeap i got the command all figured out... :) thanks!
  2. This may not be the perfect solution >>> you must have set the security settings to paranoid. :P there is a configuration utility called the mandrake control center which you can get at by clicking the K start button -> configuration -> configure your computer it runs as root and you'll be able to see the services running and whether you would like to run them on boot and all the other stuff including security levels ... you can lower them to high/normal :D cheers!
  3. so i have all this stuff running >> i know that the webserver is on port 80, but what are all the rest! tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:32768 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:997 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:3306 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:111 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:6000 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:631 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:443 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN -

  5. what's APF and BFD? There has been some kind of script out since late July that does the SSH scanning liike that. Changing the SSH port seems to take care of the problem. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> arg i have the same problem should have read this thread first :P anyways, so i have a nice fat list of hosts and ips who were trying to root login ... anyone have any experience in reporting abuse? (I was looking throught the var/logs/messages file and this one fellow tried a bunch of usernames too don't think it's a virus

  7. thats a good tip... that's how i have it setup .. .a 40GB hd with crapdows and mandrake 9.2 and 120 gig drive thats FAT32 to store all my data :D this way if i need more space for linux then i can easily format one of the partitions on the second drive as ext2 or something... but for now i'm good as it's better securitywise... i mainly use linux and some partitions i just don't mount ;) hehehe
  8. yeah that's an option ... but i don't want to delete any files that i've named with a ~ :P i work off a FAT32 partition that I share with windows ... so i have a bunch of those files that i need to get rid off :D PS: i use kwrite the most :P ... i'll look around in the options of that! :D
  9. hey guys is there some sort of a utility that will clean out the backup files created by the editors... i hate having to deleting the ~files ... any help appreciated :P :D

  14. yep it's working ... i ssh'ed to the university server and then ssh'ed from the server back on to my pc ... lol ssh is amazing ... just hope that noone's sniffing my packets :-S
  15. that was perfect ... i had to install it ... and i'd rather start the service myself :D :P however i dont have any command called checkconfig :( weird ... no man entry either !!! THanks for the html directory tip! also, is there any way that i can test this out right here on my pc? :P Just another quick question... my professor says that ssh is not at all secure, without a licenced key; i might as well be telneting... is that correct?
  16. hey guys ... i just read the whole thread thanks for helping out... if you could also kindly let me know how to start ssh ... i got my webserver working (well to put files into /var/www/html/ i need to be root and that sucks lol) and we are using unix at the labs at my school ; so all i need to do is start ssh server :P need the command for that ... and the forwarding settings if any ... (i gather that it's port 22 :P?) thanks and cheers!
  17. hey guys I just got mandrake 9.2 installed on here and it's working great! even picked up my via onboard sound :D heheh well anyways i know i should be using the search function but i cannot search for anything less than 4 characters and I have also gone through the faqs :D WEll I have looked it up on google as well and by the looks of it; I'll end up changing a bunch of files which i really don't want to do ... ifconfig would work ; but I need something permanent ... and netconfig won't load for some inane reason ... getting to the point my question is that is there a cool little gui utility that will let me change my stuff around... im running mandrake 9.2 thanks!
