  1. LLABB (looks like a bad burn), Install went fine. Update: Sorry, I guess you meant a checksum on the CD after burn? No I didn't.
  2. Won't boot on hp Celeron . Will retry the burn then retry the download.
  3. Well if you mean md5sum, yes checked via k3b and via konsole - both OK
  4. 2009.1 (md5sum checks out) on Presario CQ50 boots to a point where I receive message to the effect of : SQUASHFS error: cannot read block ... Warning: could not open an initial console 2009 loaded on this laptop but I also remember getting similar errors but I just let it set and it seemed to load OK. No go this time. Another thing. In the past when a kernel option is selected, it usually lists all the kernel options such as : uuid=hf8dhf48493hf splash=silent, etc (and you add options here) Now the options line is blank. I'm assuming this is to type in additional commands, but why has this changed? Do I have to type in all the commands I want to pass to the kernel? This seems too much. Any way I have tried several options with F4 such as default, no local apic, no acpi (they are all blank) and have let it set for 10 minutes with no luck. I have also tried the trick listed in errata for some CD readers with no luck. I have read that the SQUASHFS error may be due to the DVD reader being SATA but there is no way to change its mode in the BIOS. Also why would 2009 work and 2009.1 not? Any ideas? Thanks
  5. Thanks guys. It's entirely possible that I should NOT have named the acct guest as it may be used as a temp user directory in certain releases. Fortunately most of my important files were in user2 account so not all is lost but was scary nonetheless. Something odd here. Konsole for user1 opens to : bash-3.2$ Whereas all other user accts open (in Konsole )to: [userx@localhost~]$ Any significance? Thanks
  6. MDV 2008.1 with about 5 desktop user accts, one of which is user1. while logged in as user1 I added a new account (named guest) in MCC. Upon logging out I was un able to login as guest - error was not "enough space " or something to that effect so I deleted the guest account ( I included delete home folder of the guest acct). I had taken extra precaution to make sure "guest" was highlighted in manage users of MCC. I'm certain that I deleted "guest" and NOT "user1" from MCC Tried then to login as user1. error is "could not start kstartupconfig check your configuration". So logged in as user2 to look around and when I cd to user1 there are no directories, no files, nothing! Then "chown -R username:user /home/user1" and I am now able to login to user1 but it is a fresh account with all the default empty directories assigned to a new user, but all my files that were originally in user1 are nowhere to be found. I am able to login to user1 with the original password ( so the system must remember something about the old user1 account!) Any ideas what went wrong and where these files are? Does "guest" have any special meaning that would cause this to happen? Thank you for any help
  7. After running these video apps from the command line I began to get errors related to what appears to be insufficient memory. This is a brand new Compaq lappy with 2gb RAM so I began to get google hits relating to either disabling compiz or any other 3d desktop effects (wobbly windows etc) that might eat resources. Also got hits to modify xorg.conf due to a supposed bug in relation to intel graphics. Did this several times to no avail. Finally shut down 3d acceleration in the MCC hdwr graphics card configurator and that did the trick! Now here's the catch. Just for grins reenabled hdwr acceleration and videos are still playing! Ironically, mplayer which at least displayed something (even if broken) when the others didn't is now the player that doesn't work. Dragon, VLC,Xine and Totem all seem to be fine now. Thanks for the help. We'll see how this holds up. Any thoughts ?
  8. OK, this DVD plays in XINE on Vector Linux 5.9 .Light on an older Plll with DVD drive. Downloaded xine-ui onto the laptop and it just closes immediately upon opening. I have the files in Lexicons last post. Any thoughts? Thanks
  9. Well, man sdparm shows -d is a changed parameter to: -d, --dummy when set inhibits changes being placed in the DEVICE's mode page. Instead the mode data that would have been sent to a MODE SELECT command, is output in ASCII hex to the console. This option is mainly for testing. compared to this in hdparm: -d Disable/enable the "using_dma" flag for this drive. This option now works with most combinations of drives and PCI interfaces which support DMA and which are known to the kernel IDE driver. It is also a good idea to use the appropriate -X option in combination with -d1 to ensure that the drive itself is programmed for the correct DMA mode, although most BIOSs should do this for you at boot time. Using DMA nearly always gives the best performance, with fast I/O throughput and low CPU usage. But there are at least a few configurations of chipsets and drives for which DMA does not make much of a difference, or may even slow things down (on really messed up hardware!). Your mileage may vary So not sure if this is what i want. Anyway libdvdread4 and headers are installed from MCC. I have not yet tried older DVDs. -tail has not produced any messages other than what appears to be network traffic and me going into MCC to check/download the libdvdread4 pckg. Will give it a go and let you know. Thanks
  10. Sorry, not quite sure what you are trying to say. I have read other forums indicating this drive does have some firmware that may make it difficult to play DVDs on systems other than Windows. Someone suggested executing "hdparm -d1 /dev/dvd" as root because linux is DMA checking all drives and looking for data packet flaws. Link here. Have read hdparm man but too much of a newb to decipher. Does this sound reasonable? I don't find a /dev/dvd. I can only assume I would replace this with /media/cdrom because this is what I have listed in fstab for the drive. Thanks
  11. drive working in Vista. Drive does read and write data discs and will play audio under mdv, so I guess either my video codec are not set properly or there is some DRM firmware. thanks
  12. I don't watch DVDs much on the lappy either but it would be nice. Just wanted to make sure I don't have some DRM'd firmware on this optical drive that would only work with the original OS (Vista).
  13. Not yet. Will have a go and let you know. Mplayer did display video but very broken (not choppy).. looks more like one of those paint by number images. Disabled compiz and other resource-hungry stuff but no luck. Installed vlc (plf version from MCC) but upon playing disc, video window opens (black) for about 2 seconds then whole application shuts off. Another thread indicates firmware flash to disable/reset region lock on the optical drive. anyone heard of this? Thanks
  14. Mandriva 2009 on Compaq CQ50 with Optiarc AD7580S DVD drive. Cannot play dvd's. Tried: Dragon player Totem Mplayer Kaffeine According to MCC libdvdcss2 and win32codecs are installed but no luck. Most players get the audio but no video except for mplayer which does display some badly broken video, but I have to open each file in the media/cdrom folder I keep thinking that there is some firmware DRM/region lock on the dvd drive . Is this possible and how do I find out? Also, why is this drive referred to as a cdrom and not dvd drive in fstab? Any help appreciated
  15. Hmm. Downloading phonon-xine now allows KsCD to work but it seems very stripped of conguration. Have followed every advice in 2009 errata and still no video in Dragon, Totem or mplayer. Have d/l libdvdcss2, win32 codecs, all the gstreamer stuff...nothing. In fairness I have never got totem or kaffeine to do anything (audio or video) going back to MDK 10.0. Now totem just closes after I hit "play disc". Dragon Player crashes. Mplayer has worked in the past but now just sits there. I'm still wondering if there is some DRM'd stuff in the optical drive firmware, but still am able to read and write data to CDs and DVD. Any help appreciated.
  16. Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I missed some stuff in the errata about kde4 apps not playing audio so will give that a go and post back.
  17. Running mdvOne 2009 on presario CQ 50 laptop. This DVD RW drive does not recognize DVDs or audio CDs but does see data disks and was able to burn a data DVD in k3B. MCC sees the drive and lists options as umask=0,users,iocharset=uf8,noauto,ro,exec but there is no entry in fstab or mtab None of the media software can find media ("no media present") KsCD, Amarok, Totem, Dragon video player. Could this have to do with the sound driver? DRM? Drive works in Vista. Any help appreciated. Thanks
  18. Reasonably familiar with dual boots but never done it on a lappy (Compaq CQ50 139WM) with Vista (home basic) and with a recovery partition. Also new to 2008.1 ( 10.2 user for the past 3 yrs) I'm tempted to just wipe Vista (already annoyed by the nagware/ legal threats /crippleware/trial versions etc.) and install MDV like I have on all my other PCs, but this laptop is for daughter who might want the webcam or some other junk ......hence the dual boot. Laptop is brand new and has not even been used (configured) yet, but I will make some restore disks for her. I believe I can use Vista disk mngmnt to resize the large partition ( rather than use mdv installer), but have never done this with a recovery partition involved and want to make sure I don't have to use the recovery disks. Am assuming that the recovery part is at the end of the disk (will run fdisk -l) and won't be affected when I install GRUB to MBR and also assuming that MDV installer still recognizes the NTFS partitions and adds them to menu.lst. Is this correct? Also is it still necessary to create a FAT partition for common access by both OS's to files? Any advice welcome. Thanks
  19. I have experienced the MDV ambivalence, and some other distros might have one or the other area covered, but none has the best all 'round marks for installer/partitioner hdwr detection package selection urpmi package installer (repos could be a little more clear...... even with easyurpmi)) stability and to me the two most important The MCC the user base IMHO no other distro comes close to fulfilling all these to the extent that MDV does. I have loaded MDV on over 40 random PCs over the past 24 months and MDV nails everyone of them including dual and triple boots and dual HDs. I have loaded all the other major distros (*buntu, FC, Slack, Mepis, CentOS, Xandros) and about 10-15 smaller ones (pup, DSL, SAM, Zen, Austrumi, Kanotix, Linuxmint, sidux, etc) on these same PCs with mixed luck. Sorry, but for all the hype I have had more installation problems with *buntu than any other distro. Mandriva will load onto almost anything including my roto-tiller. My only requests would be: a cleaner website (which I believe they're working on) easier to understand repositories (some packages/descriptions are not where/what a newb might expect them according to the MCC). a little more PR to help push MDV along
  20. As time draws on, I have come to appreciate community help over "cool" features. Having used MDK 10.0, 10.2 and now MDV2008, just wanted to thank all the regulars here, MandrivaClub and PCLOS forums who have allowed me to run my business using Linux and become Windows free for close to two years now. Having futzed around with most of the other major distros (while remaining faithful to MDV), I have found that these forums have added immeasurable value to my MDV and PCLOS experience and when any prospective ex-Windows user asks me about which distro to try, my first recommendations (in order of importance ..at least to me) are to: 1. Determine which desktop they want (KDE, Gnome, etc.) 2. Check out the user forums to see which user base seems to provide the most comprehensive, courteous and responsive help 3. look for a balance in cutting edge / conservative approach to version releases and package selection There are other things to look for such as Mandriva's great installer and hdwr detection, the MCC or great package availability, but even barring that, Mandriva and PCLOS seem to have the best combination of all the necessary ingredients for a robust and useful PC experience. I intend to post this at the other two sites mentioned. Thanks again.
  21. Will try your suggestions as well. Is there a good tutorial on the differences and/or overlap of permissions and file sharing? Thanks
  22. I use [solved] very loosely in that I am still somewhat new to sharing and assumed that I could share some user1 directories so as to have access by user2 (on the same mdv2008 PC). However, due to my inexperience, I was having issues where I could not setup scanning (xsane) from user2 to the 3 folders in user1 directories. So I decided to just copy the 3 folders into user2 home folder and let user2 scan into them. Now I still had a problem in that there are several folders nested in these 3 main folders that I do not want user2 to have access to, so I just individually selected these nested folders, changed ownership and rights back to user1, and that seems to have done the trick. Maybe this was the messy way to go about it, but will give it a go and report back. Thanks
  23. Not sure if this is technically networking, but would like to block access to one user's home folder on the same PC. I have poked around with permissions, ownership, sharing, etc. Google returns file sharing between Windows and linux which is NOT what I'm doing. Under Konqueror's navigation bar in home folders: when logged in as user1, user1 has no access to user2 home directory when logged in as user2, user2 has complete access to user1 home directory and subfolders. I want user2 to have access to his own folders but no access to user1 home folder. In addition to access to his own (user2) home folder, I want to block access to 3 of the subdirectories, but no luck. I thought about encryption but it seems excessive. Any help appreciated. 24. I think Konq may be doing what I need, but have just installed Krusader which apparently has a synchronization feature. Will check that out for a while. Thanks
