    fixing a hard disk

This is a drive out a dvr721 which is based on Linux (older). The drive said it failed and I want to run a program on it to make sure that a)its not fixable or b)define, and fix, the problem. Thanks for the reply.................
  2. I have a hard disk that I would like to check/fix for errors. What is the best way to do this under linux? Thank you..............
  3. I have been trying to compile, and install, gdl-0.7.2 (need it for anjuta). As far as I can tell I did everything right and make gave me no errors. then I did the make install, the last part look like: make[2]: Nothing to be done for `install-exec-am'. test -z "/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig" || mkdir -p -- "/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig" /usr/bin/install -c -m 644 'gdl-1.0.pc' '/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig/gdl-1.0.pc' /usr/bin/install -c -m 644 'gdl-gnome-1.0.pc' '/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig/gdl-gnome-1.0.pc' make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/greg/Download/gdl-0.7.2' make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/greg/Download/gdl-0.7.2' This led me to believe that I now had it installed. However, the control center tells me that I have gld-0.6.1 installed and not the 0.7.2 Obviously, I am completely confused and have no clue and have done something wrong. Any thoughts? 4. I did a clean (new partitions, reformat, etc) install of 2007 and chose GNOME as the desktop. I tried and that really failed. I am now running with, I believe (on a different machine right now) 2.02 which mandriva had on its list and installed. I am also now trying to run with glade3 and have been told that I should re-compile anjuta with glade3 if I want to do that. I am going to make a run at that in the next couple of days. Thank you very much for the reply.
  5. I have been trying to do some programming. I tried anjuta only to find that it doesn't seem to want to deal with glade and help does not work. Then I dropped back to glade itself and tried that and the help does not work. Its obvious to me that I do not have a clue. I am spinning my wheels trying to find documentation and I can only find online documentation and nothing for any programs (for some strange reason I can't seem to get help to work). I can, I guess, go with online and switch back and forth but I am sure that I must be doing something wrong (due to ignorance I think). I can only assume that Glade, for instance, is properly installed as it comes right up and one can do things (except see the help file). Can ANYBODY tell me where I am going wrong here? It would also be nice if anjuta actually worked but, when I try and do a tutorial, or even read the documentation, nothing seems to match up (when it says, for instance, "and this will start glade" and then nothing happens. I suspect that all of my problems are going to boil down to a setup issue but, for the life of me, I cannot seem to find solutions! I am, incidentally, coming from windows and have been messing with computers for a long time and, so, have some small knowledge of how they are supposed to work.
  6. I am running with 2007 and am now trying to get anjuta up. I want to do programming with plan C. I have a number of problems and I have posted them on their forum but nobody seems to be home so I hope somebody here can help. I cannot seem to get help working as it tells me its not installed although it seems to be (must have been automatic as I cannot find where to download help files although mmc tells me its already on my system) I was trying to run a tutorial (hello world) and it tells me to goto view->edit gui and there is no such place (this was supposed to start glade) I can, however, run glade, outside of anjuta, so I know that is installed (v 2.? although v 3.? is available - perhaps I should be running that?) Am I spinning my wheels trying to use anjuta and should I drop back to glade and an editor and live with it? [moved from Software by spinynorman]

    update help

I think the system is down. easy urpmi says that there are no mirrors for 2007. I have tried to add w/mmc and have clicked on every url and it flunks. It did this incrementally. First it gave me a whole series of update media (through 7) even when I tried to get sources (main, contrib, etc). It is simply screwed, I fear................ (its been on, and of, for a week) If it gets fixed I hope somebody posts that as I am giving up for now.
  8. Now I am seriously thanking you. I did as you suggested and then re-booted and it worked! You might post this someplace for all the other poor devils with the same problem (there are a number of them). Thanks again!
  9. I do have midnight commander up as that is how I got the info for you. I will try the change and see if it does any good - thank you!
  10. I would like to do that. However, I have nothing but a command screen (I am writing this from a windows machine). The load section look like: "dbe" # double-buffering extension "v4l" # Video for Linux "exlmod" "type1" "freetype" the load libglx.so (and it is there) "glx" I should add that this also seems to be, now, a known problem (along with lots of others. I guess I will just wait, along with others - no big deal). Thanks for the reply..............
  11. I just did a clean 2007 install and am running GNOME. When it was setting up the only thing not configured was the display (I have a TNT2 (Nvidia)) I clicked on that one, it said there was proprietary driver available, did I want that and I hit yes (when installing I just hit the defaults). Anyway, it asked this question two times and two times I said yes. I continued to do its thing and then told me to reboot. I did that. and THEN I got the x server message. I then went to XFdrake and ran that . When tested it said: X server is disabled and to run gdm after its fixed and then: Found an error: (EE) Failed to Load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia-legacy/libglx.so (EE) Failed to Load Modules /usr/lib/Xorg/Modules/Extensions/Nvidia-Legacy/libglx.so (LoaderFailed, 7)

    Curious

I am curious. I am also running with GNOME. I would appreciate some recommendations for a PIM (Personal Information Manager) Don't need anything real fancy just someplace to store stuff. I also wonder if there are any programs that will sit in a panel and let the user know if the hard disk is being accessed and the CPU load (find this information interesting in certain circumstances) Thank you.................
  13. Thanks for all the replies! I want to run GNOME as I want to do some Plain C (not C++) programming and that seems to be the way to go to do that. I have not installed firefox yet as I was shooting, exactly, for the directories suggested but that means I must be logged in as root and I do not know how to do that outside of the terminal. If I call the unzipper from a terminal (logged in to root) would that work? I did install forefox sucessfully one time. The problem was that I did not like where I had stuck it. I suspect that if I install it in the right place that the system is going to have less problems recognizing that its there?
  14. To copy and paste I just select the text and then press the middle button of the mouse ( or left and right at the same time if I don't have a 3-button mouse ) wherever I want to paste it. (I'm using KDE though, don't know if it's the same in gnome) Amazing! I right click and copy comes up and if I do it again paste comes up - thank you for pointing the way! Which version of Mandriva 2006 are you running? (free?) I reinstalled 2006 christmas edition and caused my disaster. Have you set up the repositories using easy-urpmi (link at the top of this page)? Several times. A .tar is an archive, so it shall probably be opened by fileroller. Yep - then I can unzip it but only in the home directory - I was shooting for \usr You shall not login as root other than in a terminal! Doing that you can easily ruin your system If there is a way it is well hidden, probably for the same reason you mentioned. I am on a learning curve here (kinda steep) and really do not care if I trash the system as, then, I would simply reinstall and that just takes time. Thank you for the reply.
  15. Then, after I do that there is: konqueror / sub menu preference or option it is called then change the settings in konqueror for files association type txt (then subtype html) to point to new firefox version) this add application, then make it top of the list My problem with this one is that konqueror is a kde application and I am running with GNOME. This, therefore, is a complete mystery to me.
  16. I am running with the GNOME desktop. To cut and paste I have been right clicking and choosing. I am coming from windows. Sometimes ^C, ^V works and sometimes it does not. I have read the GNOME documentation and it says that this has to do with text shortcuts and then gives directions. The problem is that 'text shortcuts' do not appear and I have no idea, therefore, how to set these shortcuts. Any thoughts? Because I am using the GNOME desktop I seem to be running into a bunch of problems that, possibly, I would not have otherwise. I am not sure. For instance, when I try and do the mandriva update thing it tells me that my machine is already registered and that it cannot update this system. If I run the applet it says it cannot connect and to contact mandrake online. Sometimes, when I am trying to use mmc to install it will tell me simply that it cannot do that (no explanation). In addition to all of that my update media is not acceptable no matter what I do. I am getting a little frustrated. then there is the problem with .tar files. If I click on them I am immediately taken to the unzipper (file roller). If I try and put something in /usr it will tell me that I can't do that as I am not logged in as root. How do I login as root through a gui? (no problem with terminal). Thank you................
  17. Luck is exactly what seems to be in short supply. I reinstalled linux and have opened a real can of worms. Things are simply no longer working correctly (I have posts all over the place). I fully expect to keep on moving ahead but, for the time being, I am busy learning more and more (getting more and more dangerous). I am currently dropping back to read everything I can on rpm and then I will forage ahead. Thanks for the reply..................
  18. thank you for the reply. I have to assume that I will need to install konqueror to make this happen? Just looked and cannot find that program. I am, however, using gnome for a desktop and that, I fear, is perhaps making things difficult? I just wish that I could somehow fix my 'updates' file (mmc) so that it worked. I have done the easy urpmi thing (several times - different url's, etc) and also updated inside mmc to no avail. Now, the command: rpm -e --nodeps firefox_name_ofprm.rpm is interesting. I think that "firefox_name_ofprm.rpm" is supposed to be the name of the package in question? I did a query and what I have is mozilla-firefox-1.0.6-16.4.20060mdk - will that work? thanks again.............
  19. Thank you. I did that and I can run firefox (latest and greatest). The problem is that mandriva does not know its really there. For instance, when I went and tried to remove firefox 1.0.6 I was told that it also had to remove GNOME and Epiphany. I really want my desktop to be GNOME so I cannot do that. I also added firefox to the menu for easy access and there is no problem there. Something is very strange I fear.
  20. This might have confused you,; you should already have everything needed installed. Just go ahead with the download and install firefox. Unless I do not understand something Konqueror is a web browser (as well) you can also install opera before you delete firefox if that worries you I would really like to install firefox. I have downloaded the tar file but there is no install in that package (from firefox.com) and I have no clue where to go with that one. When I try and install from MMC (this happens automatically when I try and update Epiphany) I got the age old (for me) error that my update file is possibly out of date (I have run easy urpmi many times, choosing different url's each time to no avail, I have also followed any and all suggestions - to no avail - my system simply refuses to do it). All this started when I re-installed mandriva from the december 2006 dvd. Perhaps I should download the 2006 core cd and reinstall all over again? (this is no big deal - just takes time) My only problem with that is that I am not sure it just won't make the problem worse.
  21. I do have 1.0.6 on my machine. I thought to delete it but, if I do that, it will also ephiphany and leave me with no browsers. I then went to the firefox website. Read what I need to install. One program is called xfree86 This seems to be a handler for video cards. I am running with a tnt2 (nvidia). I then did a little search on xfree and nvidia. Seems that there might be a problem if its done wrong. In my list of xfree86's I could not find one specifically for the tnt2 (nvidia). Now I am stuck. Any thoughts on this one? (other than to swap out my video card) Thanks..............
  22. I just noticed that they have almost fixed the mirror thing with: URPMI Media Configuration Command Please copy and paste the following command in a terminal, replace the string "PASSWORD" with your Club password and run it as root: urpmi.addmedia "club.club_x86-32_2006" https://drufus2002%40yahoo.com:PASSWORD@dl....ub/2006.0/i586/ with hdlist.cz In case you encounter problems downloading RPMs from this media, add the urpmi option --wget. Once you have run the urpmi.addmedia command, all the packages from this software repository will be listed in the Mandriva package manager. The only problem is that it cannot find the file (even with the --wget (I put it right after urpmi and also at the end of the command - no difference)
  23. I have reinstalled and now am updating. I found "urpmi --auto-select --auto" and did that. It promptly updated 34 programs. It also told me: medium "updates" uses an invalid list file: mirror is probably not up-to-date, trying to use alternate method I have run easy urpmi - for everything and for updates by itself. In each instance there were no errors and things seemed to work just fine. On the other hand I get this invalid list thing no matter what I do. I also wonder what 'alternate method' means. It also tries to update firefox 1.0.6 (which is installed on my machine and the screen is really messed up) to the latest and greatest. In this case I am told: Installation failed: mozilla-firefox = 1.0.6 is needed by (installed) yelp-2.12.2-2mdk.i586 I went out and tried to find 1.0.6 but it seems to be not available. This is all very mysterious to me. I am assuming that easy urpmi simply 'knows' where the valid list files are and downloads the proper files, based on the chosen url, into this machine (I have, incidentally, tried at least 11 different urls but assume that should not make any difference as they should all be valid?). Then, when the control center is run that program goes out, reads the easy urpmi approved file lists, updates its information and determines what needs updating based on what is in the file list and what is in the machine. Anything that needs updating is then updated. The files needed for the update(s) are determined, again by the list file and then downloaded into my machine and installed. This seems to be pretty straightforward. There are, however, some details that are a little fuzzy. the control center, for instance, updates itself anytime it is run. It updates itself on the net. It uses the list file to know where to go on the net? If one has just downloaded the 'valid' list then what in the world is it updating? (one would think a simple crc check against the existing file would do the job). All that being said - I cannot seem to get past the up-to-date error. What was truly interesting is that the urpmi --auto-select --auto command did a much better job than the control center in that it charged ahead and did its thing inspite of the up-to-date problem. Whoever posted that one has my gratitude. Thank you.............

    reinstalling mandriva

I did put them all in. I did it a couple of times just to make sure (between problems). When I deleted a previous group they were all there to be deleted so I have to assume that I got all the current lists. All five also appear in the control center. If, and when, 2007 appears it may fix all my problems?
  25. I decided to reinstall mandriva (2006.0 - december, dvd) I did that (strange christmas theme) I did this so that I could be running with GNOME and it just seemed simpler. Then I went to easy urpmi and did that thing to make sure of my sources. I then went to the update program section and it went out and found over 75 programs that needed updating. First I tried to update them all at one time - flunked. Then I started with fewer and fewer. I am now down to one. It wants, for instance, to update the gnome browser which also means it wants to install firefox 1.5? (now has 1.06 which is pretty screwed up). When it tries it then tells me that my update sources are flawed. I then go in and choose yet another site but, yet again, the source is suspected of not being up to date. What I am now doing is picking and choosing which programs to update and some will and some will not. I think I may be getting myself into trouble although everything seems to be working (except the updating which is a disaster). I can just keep picking away at this thing or can do something else. My basic problem, in all of this, is that I have no idea what that something else might be (although I do suspect there is a better plan of attack). If anybody has thoughts on this one I would REALLY appreciate those thoughts. There is, incidentally, nothing on this machine worth saving so I will not feel any loss at reinstalling again, etc. I also have a good internet connection. If I saw a newer system to download I would do that but I cannot find one that looks any newer.
