  1. But it could happen: http://devloop.lyua.org/blog/ Good advide; definitely don't ignore bad signatures, it is a bad idea. So true!! Not long ago at work, I setup my WinXP PC with usefull tools (text editor, CD/DVD burner...). Sure, there is a LOT of "free cost" software; people keep telling that in favour of windows. But 90% is crap, if not more! I wanted to download only Free Software (as in freedom): I barely managed to find a decent burner, and a decent text editor! And thanksfully some Linux software exist in win32 version, else I would have found NOTHING for some categories of software! (except crap shareware of course) Sadly, yes... Free software/Open source licenses are what gives quality to this software. I agree with you blin. Now on topic (Mandriva 2007.1). I tried Metisse yesterday; it's awesome! :) :) I immediately found usefull features: - I was sorting my photos; I had Nautilus and Eog open (one above the other) and placed a "to delete" emblem on photos/movies I decided were not worth keeping. So I rotated both windows as in the Metisse demo, which allowed me to "follow" files with my finger on the Nautilus window while browsing photos in Eog, in cases where many photos looked almost the same! - I checked my bank accounts. I usually try and resize/move my Gnucash and Firefox windows so that I more or less can both read FF and write GC on the same screen. With Metisse, I selected the account entries area in the web page, created a "Facade" out of it, then selected the input area in Gnucash, and dropped it into the same "Facade", and voila! I had both areas in the same window, and interactive of course! - While browsing my photos/movies, some movies were really small (digital camera low resolution); instead of hunting for the zoom feature of Xine, I just moved the mouse to the titlebar and rolled the wheel until the movie was the size I wanted :) And everything without a crash. Very stable. Great release. Yves.
  2. But still no webcam support :( Yves.
  3. That is weird! It never happened to me. I use official mirrors listed from Mandriva's site. When I downloaded the DVD, I got disconnected if connection was too slow (150kB/s or so), but once I found a mirror at more than 500kB/s, download went fine. Anyway, always check your downloaded ISO before burning it! Yves.
  4. Hello! As you probably know, this board is not officially affiliated in any way with Mandriva; we're just users of Mandriva. Yet thank you for sharing. I also have an EPIA board, currently running 2007.0, and I was wondering if upgrading to 2007.1 was worth the effort. Is there any improvement with 2007.1+k2.6.21 over 2007.0 for running a media/living-room PC? off-topic...: I would be interested in knowing what software you use. I tried Myth but it was way too heavy for the M10000N, then I tried VDR, but couldn't find how to configure it. Now I'm just using plain Gnome+Nautilus+Xine. Yves.
  5. There's something strange here. It's been a long time since I last used a PS/2 kbd, and I never had any problem with any bootable CD or DVD on any of my PCs at any stage of the boot process... Not that it gives any answer nor any hint towards one... That was just to highlight the fact that maybe this is a hardware issue (maybe a failing keyboard controler on the mainboard), or maybe a badly burnt media. Yves.
  6. Welcome back ncb :) Mandriva was still Mandrake up to version 10.1 IIRC. Then Mandrake 10.2 came under the name "Mandriva 2005 LE" and it's been Mandriva ever since (and will remain so). Since this release also, numbering is done after the year (the next year actually). Yves.
  7. For KDE, I recommend K3B. For Gnome, I recommend Brasero. Both will allow you to burn anything to any CD or DVD (not HD, yet). Neither will allow you to author a SVCD or a DVD (or if it does, it will be very basic without a menu). For authoring, vcdimager (SVCD) and dvdauthor (DVD) are needed. You'd then probably use a GUI front-end of your choice. Yves.
  8. mencoder is indeed very good at conversions. I use it almost every day :) It is not suited however for actually making an ISO. For that I use dvdauthor, but any GUI front-end should do; according to jaraeez, DeVeDe seems to be good. Yves.
  9. Although it is never mentionned (yet available through easyurpmi), I recently abandonned all other burners in favor of Brasero. It so simple my grandmother could use it! And it just works :) Yves.

    Init strings

Does this help you? https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtop...mp;#entry204253 It describes a working PPP configuration, wrapped by two commands: pppon.sh and pppoff.sh, both of which can of course be called by buttons, menu items... as you want. Yves.
  11. I come here a little late, and haven't read all previous posts, so I'm sorry if this has already been asked. Couldn't it be that your sound volume is set to 0? It often happens (it happens to me at each install), so maybe all you have to do is turn the volume up... Yves.
  12. Hello, I use BincIMAP and it just works :) Just intall, then start xinetd and that's all. BincIMAP is based on the Maildir format, that is your mail is stored in "~/Maildir/". Postfix can easily be configured (a single line to change) to use this format too. Yves.

    Init strings

I guess you'll need to tell us more about your modem, especially the brand and model. However, as far as I'm concerned, I'd be at a loss to deduce the init string from this information. For my own modem, I deduced the init string from what I could gather from the .INI file of the windows driver. Yves. [edit:]Could you put your windows driver files somewhere on the net? I may have a look if I find time, and if it is not too difficult, however I can't promise.[/edit]
  14. I can't find anything on Google, but I know it can be done. There's an option for /etc/urpmi/urpmi.conf that is the equivalent to the -noclean option. It might be as simple as adding this at the head of your urpmi.conf file: { noclean } Yves.
  15. You can actually do the same with EasyUrpmi :) Copy-paste the given commands from your browser to a text editor (check there are no superfluous line-breaks), then save in a file, eg: /tmp/update.easyurpmi, and: - either execute the command: sh /tmp/update.easyurpmi, - or GUI way: navigate, right-click, execute permission, double-click, wait... Yves.
  16. In fact it might be possible to sort-of "refresh" mount options for at least some mount points. I've never tried it, but you may want to try the "-o remount" option; see mount man page. Yves.
  17. Playing in any standalone DVD player (leaving apart media reflexivity issues) implies either DVD or SVCD format (forget about plain VCD). Either format is based on the MPEG container, which supports subtitles. However, while I've been able to add subtitles to a DVD, I've not been able to do so with SVCD so far (well I did, but I don't know how to view them). Basically, all you'll need is spumux, which uses an XML file for instructions, and is able to use many existing text-based subtitles formats to some extent (conversion is needed because MPEG subtitles are transparent bitmaps). Yves.
  18. I don't know this product. What do you mean by "merge"? Do you want to merge the subtitle bitmaps with the video frames (sort of "copy-paste in gimp"), or do you want to merge the AVI file and the TXT file into a single file using a subtitles-enabled format, such as MPEG or newer alternatives (Matroska...)? Yves.
  19. I know it does not show much, but what I wrote indeed takes an AVI for input and outputs an MPEG. In the simplest form, this converts an AVI to MPEG: mencoder FILE.AVI -of mpeg -mpegopts vaspect=4/3 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:aspect=4/3 -oac mp3lame -lameopts vbr=3:br=128:q=0:aq=0 -ofps 25 -o FILE.MPEG Note however, that contrary to AVI, the mpeg format doesn't accept all aspect ratio; only 4/3 and 16/9. Besides, you cannot put anything inside an MPEG container; here I choose MPEG2 video and MPEG1-layer3 (aka "mp3") audio. Yves. [edit:]All else I added in the previous post was to ensure a compression factor suitable for SVCD, or was directly related to the SVCD constraints.[/edit]
  20. True, however those "Add..." buttons add sources with "synthetic" metadata, not full metadata. If you often use urpmf, or if you'd like to see the description of packages in rpmdrake, then those buttons are totally useless. It's a shame they didn't add a small checkbox to choose between partial and full metadata :( Yves.
  21. Hello Peezee, Instead of asking the same question again: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=40460&hl= could you please tell us in what way our answers don't answer your need? Yves.
  22. In the future, you might prefer to use checkinstall, which basically transforms a non-RPM install into an RPM one. Yves.
  23. I don't know for the one you mention, but I've bought this one: http://www.trust.com/products/product.aspx?artnr=14736 and it really works well :) out of the box! Yves.
