  1. Well this was just "food for thought", as the saying goes… Actually, I don't really understand what your problem is. Could you post a screenshot? Yves.
  2. (I suppose this is a question about my previous post) Yes and no :) Tutorials, how-tos and software reviews would indeed be the kind of content I propose, but I prefer to retain the Question/Answers method, instead of contributions/articles. For example: or: I'm sorry if my idea is not clear enough. I'll continue to explain if needed. Anyway, it's just one idea among others. By the way, I like ilia_kr's suggestion too. Last summer, I setup a laptop with Linux for my son (6yr old, has reduced "agility/motor" skills), and I was very surprised to discover a wealth of great software for children! Yves.
  3. I mean I have the feeling that most questions here relate to installing/updating, configuring, or repairing a Linux system or its hardware support. So I propose that the new site doesn't deal with those questions at all (although some stickies for common things are more than welcome), and relates instead to using the OS: use the GUI, the CLI, discover Linux applications, and so on… Yves.
  4. Given it will be a companion site to this one, what would you think of a site about everything Linux except things not working, I mean not: - This or that peripheral does't work; how do I configure it? - Upgrade broke my system! but rather: - How do I obtain this or that effect in Gimp? - What software exists for cloning a system? Yves.
  5. Could it be perhaps some sort of confusion between internet adresses and disk adresses (eg: /usr/share)? Yves.
  6. I've done this using Gparted (using "System Rescue CD"): - partition destination disk: same layout, different sizes, - right-click » copy on source partition, - right-click » paste on destination partition, - and so on… Or a carefull "copy" of all files using tar. This latter method also works accross the network, the destination PC running sshd from a live CD :) Yves.
  7. This is a little old but it may help you still: http://yves.gablin.club.fr/gablin.php?page...le=config_mouse Yves.
  8. I don't have an explanation, but hopefully this trick may work for you: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?s=&...st&p=381954 Yves.
  9. One never knows… I'm sorry if I upset you. I'm afraid I won't be able to help you. I'll let you know if I have an idea, though :) By the way: Welcome to this pleasant place :) Yves.
  10. You didn't type the '#', did you? (that's root's shell prompt) Network devices don't appear in /dev. That's OK. What does the following command tell (as root)? # modprobe via-rhine Yves.
  11. via-rhine has been suported for a very long time, so it may be that the driver is already loaded. What does the following command tell (as root)? # lsmod | grep -i via Yves.

    2008.1rc2

If 3D is enabled, it may be the cause. Yves.
  13. Maybe VMWare would better fit your needs. Anyway, here are usefull links I gathered: - https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=51074 - http://oopsilon.com/Running-a-Windows-Partition-in-VMware - http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=333 - http://mesbalivernes.blogspot.com/2008/01/...m-existing.html Your main problem will be Windows activation. I set up VMWare (almost) as explained in the second link above; unfortunately, the first link below did not work for me: Windows works fine in the virtual machine, but when I boot it with the real hardware, it demands activation again. - http://w3.cs.jmu.edu/arch/schol/sysadm/hdvm-instl/All.html - http://communities.vmware.com/message/623365 - http://www.microsoft.com/france/technet/pr...te/xpactiv.mspx By the way: - The Parted "set 1 boot on" command doesn't work. Instead, you'll have to open MCC, change boot configuration to "text LILO" with windows as default OS; then you can run "dd if=/dev/hda of=WindowsXP.mbr bs=512 count=63" (or similar) as explained. After all is done and working, you can revert to graphic Grub with Linux as the default OS. - Be extremely carefull ! The Windows partition must not be used twice at the same time, for example both booted (VMWare) and mounted (Linux), else you can destroy your Windows filesystem. The Linux partition must not be used twice at the same time, for example booted both for real and in VMWare by inadvertance, else you can destroy your Linux filesystem. Yves.
  14. And now for Metacity: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=526119 Yves.
  15. Oh! Sorry, I thought 3.1 was the latest… Simply ignore what I wrote, then. Yves.
  16. Mandriva is by far my prefered Linux distribution. However, it is definitely targeted at new hardware and just won't run on older hardware; that's why you have to use such an old release. I suggest you try Debian instead: - Latest release (3.1) ships with a 2.4 kernel (see "nomade" in my signature); - It is much more up-to-date (than Mdk 9.1) where drivers are concerned; - It is after all a mainstream distribution. Yves.
  17. Since nobody seems to know anything about those bugs, I decided to report the Compiz ones, for a start: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15321 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15322 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15323 Yves.
  18. As this theme is very Gnome-centric, and one of the very few to show the new abilities in Metacity-theming (as far as I can see), I decided to submit it to art.gnome.org too. I'll see... Yves.
  19. Thank you very much for sharing! TV cards are a pain to setup. Yves.
  20. Be aware that those receipts can be disabled. I always disable all kinds of receipts in my email, for two reasons: - Many people turn automatic receipts on, with the effect that I am expected to send the receipts back even for the most insignificant emails. - Those stupid email softwares (with NO exception that I'm aware of) ask that I confirm that I have read the emails BEFORE I actually read them, whereas often I just skim over it rapidly, or even skip it (because I'm using the up/down arrows). Yves.
  21. Wow, FX, where did you get that background picture? My son likes cars a lot, I'd like to setup his desktop with this one. Yves.
  22. Here's my current Compiz-fusion setup. - Metacity: Light Stones YG 2.0, my own theme, exploring newer Metacity theme features. - Gtk: Glossy with colors changed around blue and gray. - Background: Yet Another Rose from art.gnome.org. - ROX desktop. - Icon theme: Noia from art.gnome.org. Yves.
  23. Updated for better usability :) I am quite sure I encountered 4 bugs, one in Metacity, three in Compiz. Do you know of them, are they actual bugs? 1 (Metacity): With standalone Metacity (no 3D), using my theme, each newly drawn window's titlebar is colored the default gray, except where the title is, where it is correctly colored after the gtk theme. However, I just need to slightly resize the window, or shade/unshade it, for the titlebar to become thereafter as it should be: entirely colored after the gtk theme, with no gray, and it stays correct until it is closed. 2 (Compiz): Extra Metacity buttons don't work properly (I haven't tried the "above" button yet): - shade: It works when clicked, but it remains the "shade" button, instead of becoming the "unshade" one. - stick: It works when clicked, but it then disapears and is not replaced by the "unstick" button. 3 (Compiz): My current setup tells the focus to follow the mouse; this usually works. But whenever the mouse goes over a shaded window, focus is locked to this shaded window: moving the mouse over any other window (and even clicking those windows) doesn't change the focus. However, opening a new window resets the focus to a correct behaviour... until the mouse goes again over a shaded window. 4 (Compiz): A metacity theme defines a style-set for each of the "normal", "dialog", "modal_dialog", "utility", "menu", and "border" kind of window. With Compiz enabled, the "normal" style-set is used for all kinds of windows, and the window decorations aren't even drawn for detached menus ("menu" kind, in Gimp for example). For better understanding of why I think the 1st item is a bug, you have to know that my theme defines focused windows this way: - Frame background is colored "gtk:bg[sELECTED]" with alpha "0.0" (invisible in compiz, plain metacity ignores alpha). - Titlebar is not defined (not drawn). - Title is written on top of a "gtk:bg[sELECTED]" background the same size as the title text. What do you think? Yves.
  24. It depends... I don't want to appear to tell you what your needs are, but look at it this way: there's no such thing as a "stand-alone drive". It actually is a stipped-down PC, but much smaller than what you'd achieve by yourself. By bying a NAS, you actually buy a special-purpose PC (as are many modern routers and modems, too). Let's assume this NAS is $10; on the other hand you can have an equivalent IDE/SATA drive for $4 and make a minimal PC for another $4, which makes it $8 in total: you save $2 in the process. I don't know actual prices. Then there are the other things you'll want to consider: size, noise, and electric consuption. Were I you (but again, I'm not), I'd actually compare the prices between a "stand-alone NAS" and a fan-less mini-ITX setup with an equivalent hard drive inside. Now it's up to you :) Yves.
  25. Configure sudo to allow you to start and stop this software, and then create shortcuts. Yves.
