    K3b

The speed can depend on the CD-R / CD-RW quality. k3b detects at witch speed the media is writable and tries to burn at the fastest posssible speed. But if the media is slow it burns .. slow. If you try to copy a disk, it also depend on the speed of the source media. Burning an image is always the fastest as the HD is much faster to read than a CD-Rom.
  3. If your box's name is mtweidmann.local.network, the domain name of your network is local.network. The only other domain name I know is in Samba::smb.conf:
  4. I've tried Limewire, mldonkey, Gtk-Gnutella. Imo, Limewire is by far the best. Unfortunately when its running my PC is so slow thats its almost unusable. My config is old (PIII 733, 128Mb ram). If you have a "normal" config that should be fine. Install this JAVA Runtime environment first jre:much easier to install than the Sun's one and run the installer in a X console, NOT in a pure text console. As Limewire is not good for my box, I use Gtk-gnutella but I think that the GUI is really horrible. Not a quality interface.
  5. Intel P4 takes its power from the 12V, AMD Athlon takes its power from the 5V Edit: more exactly, of course, that's the Mobo that convert the 5V or 12V to 1.8 V or so. (see the capacitors and self just near the CPU). I've read in a magazine yesterday that the P4 voltage comes from the 12V and the Athlon voltage comes from the 5V. Thinking of it, if its true, I don't know why Mobo manufacturers decided to make the cpu voltage from 12 or 5V depending one the CPU type. 1.8V is 1.8V, whatever from witch voltage its made.
  6. For me it's one of the best joke on the web.

    bittorrent

Yes, that's so simple that I didn't know how to do at first. Always worked fine for me ... except with the 10.0 OE. I have "got bad file info" message. I tried several time without success. Then I tried with an other .torrent file, the CE one, to check, and it worked. So it makes me think that the OE .torrent file that is bad. Does somebody else had the trouble ? Thanks roland
  8. At home since ML10.0, k3b take a long time to launch (around 1 or 2 mn), displaying the same message. See if it's really crashed or only long to launch.
  9. Ok got them through FTP. Well I liked the torrent idea. I've done the 3 downloads simultaneously. 178 KB/s for CD1, 188KB/s for CD2, 151KB/s for CD3, simultaneously, in proxad.net. I couldn't believe it, that gives a total of 517KB/s, around 4Mbauds/s ! B) . On less than 2.5 hours that was done. I knew my connection is quite special but it's supposed to be 2Mbauds/s.
  10. The .torrent files don't work: I have "got bad file info" message. I've tried with an other .torrent file, the CE one, to see if my config changed by itself, but no it works with the CE .torrent. must be the OE .torrent file that is bad :o Does somebody else had the trouble ? or better does the .torrent file for OE worked for somebody here ? Thanks roland
  11. I think OE is just the first CE with bugfixes. Then CE continued to evolve. I started with the CE but updated it with the OE RPM's from the beginning. Now, If I do an update with the OE RPM's I don't have any update to do. If I try an update with the CE PRMs I have plenty (that I don't want to install). So: Is my CE an OE now ?
  12. SD Ram I guess... or EDO. If it's EDO I have some too (I still use the SD...) If you can put 64Mb or more, I think 10.0 is better: its faster than 9.2 witch was faster than 9.1 with... 8.2 ? I think so. Anyway 8.2 was very good too.
  13. If you updated your CE with the CE tree I don't think you can update your CE with the OE tree now. They are NOT compatible. CE is more bleeding edge. Ugrading to OE ? I don't know. I've heard that Mandrake's upgrades are better now, I was quite satisfied with my upgrade from 9.2 to 10.0 CE (thought I've made a fresh install since then to see if there is a difference: didn't seen any). But an upgrade from 10 CE to 10 OE ? I don't know as 10 CE is more advanced. Fresh install 10 OE ? I'm asking myself the same question thought I've promised myself (and my wife) that I'm not going to break my 10.0 CE that runs perfectly well :deal: ... but I'm curious........... Anyway: from the beginning, I've updated my 10.CE with the 10.0 OE tree. So I think my 10.0 CE is still OE compatible and even is a OE. Am I wrong here ?
  14. my comments: your right, better go slowly, step by step: 1: I agree, the OS is the last to change, 2 & 3: I agree, the browser, e-mail client and address book are the first to change. Personally I think it would be enough for a first step. IMO, the next step is: ask the users to use .PDF file format for attached document. They can use Open Office for that. If they prefer, let them work with M$ Office as usual, but ask them to use Open Office to convert M$ Office document to .PDF Open Office is still slow to launch but if the PCs are powerful enough it can stay on the background. And I tell you, Open Office version 1.1.1 is very good to import M$ Office files. It's ready. Easily match M$ Office 97. Then the users are going to get used with Open Office and perhaps are going to switch by themselves. Then the big jump ? switch to Linux ? (probably depend on the other apps they are running on Windows) Ok I'm late. but well that's the occasion to speak.
  15. generally, when you install Linux, you have 3 partitions: - swap: don't care, for virtual memory - /home: where datas are. If your account is blabla, your datas are in /home/blabla - /: called root. all the rest are there. When you do a fresh install, you reformat / do NOT format /home and you'll keep all your datas simple like that :)
  16. Be aware that with DrakX partitioning you can NOT move the beginning of a partition. For partitionning a disk with valuable data, I advice you to use something like Partition Magic. DrakX partitioning is fine but for simple things. Carefull with it (my experience)
  17. point 1: What is your file system for / and /home ? I've had my young childrens wildly switching off my computer numerous time but never had problem any more since I used a journalized file system: Ext3 or ReiserFS. If you use one of the 2 file system above and had all messed then I tell you: bad luck. Else, having to use the hard reset button or do a wild switching off is extremely rare on Linux. In fact I don't think it ever happened except at the very beginning. Do you know how to cleanly kill a crashed app in Linux ?
  18. here is a flash plugin for Mandrake ftp://mandrake-forum.org/pub/Misc/flash-p...0.81-1.i386.rpm your talking about something else I guess ?
  19. In the beginning of the week, I've e-mailed at least to 10 MEPs of my region, with a little text of me and the Mandrakesoft text. Not any answer so far :( There is a little article in the The Economist english newspaper, may 22nd - 28th, p70. It's a newspaper that has influence and it's against Patent on software. "...The matter is controversial because the intellectual property of software is typically protected through copyright. This prohibits plagiarizing code, but allows competitors to devise different code that achieves the same end. Patent law in contrast, outlaws any other software that achieve the same effect, no matter how. Dubious software patents abound: the best known example is the American patent awarded in 1999 to Amazon for the "one-click" shopping model used in its online store. Although software patents are already allowed in most European countries, they are awarded and enforced unevenly. The Council of ministers approved the draft directive, but, crucially, in a form that lacked amendments made by the European Parliament last September that restricted its scope. The two versions thus differ greatly, reflecting two sides of a polarised debate. The council favours software patents, a boon to big technology firms and intellectual-property holders. The parliament opposes software patents, and generally favours smaller firms and open-source software developers. From here, the directive will grind through the EU bureaucracy, getting tweaked along the way. It will be at least a year before it comes to final vote, assuming it gets that far. Clearly there may be cases where a better digital mousetrap is worthy of a patent. But if software patent are too easy to obtain, they may stifle innovation more than promote it. ..."
  20. I'm glad to hear that. As I've never used IE in my life I can't compare :)

    The OpenCD

That's funny, I've just started to give around me some cd-rom of a compilation I've maid yesterday. Well not all free but my main goal for now is to make them switch from IE/Outlook to Mozilla: - Mozilla 1.6 fr - Open Office 1.1.1 fr: it's ready now I think. the compatibility with M$ Office files is very good. The main argument I give is that it can import M$ files and export in .PDF format - java: j2re-1_4_2_04: for Mozilla and open Office - flash plugin: Shockwave Flash 7.0 r19: for Mozilla - ad-aware 6: a very good spyware killer (free for personal use) - Antivir: a very good virus killer (free for personal use) - Acrobat Reader - md5sum: a Win app to check md5 sum - and several scanners against different virus
  22. Pffffff :( Me I thought this was over and thought the problem of Patent on software was solved. Big mistake. The big guys were soft until now as they didn't want to show how bad Patent on software is before it was adopted. Now they are going to have fun. The bad side effect of the patent on software are starting to be obvious in the States and I bet they are going to soften it before 5 years..after Longhorn is released. Then Europe will stay with the most restrictive law of the world .. before as usual we do like America with 5 years delay and then soften it too.. when we would be completely trapped with Longhorn and all those "trusted" computing. Now what ? In my little company we make (proprietary, Windows  ) softwares. I'm sure we use some patented things without knowing. We made a meeting and decided we are not going to change anything. Business as usual. If we got some trouble, let's see. For now I just continue to keep any assets away from this unstrusted state. After I've stayed like a clandestine in my own country for more than 2 years because I didn't wanted to pay some fines, I know we need to be able to move on a week delay. back to the topic: Yeah gowator, you are right. let's continue to do all we can. It's not over. I'm going to meet the candidates for the European elections and talk with them.
  23. hello ! no. From memory: if CD1 does not boot, insert CD2 and then insert CD1 when asked. then type F1 key for more options and type "expert" for expert mode. Not really, expert, easy but you have more control. When it's time to set the partitions, go custom partitioning. Just create 2 partitions: / and /home (I guess your hd already have a swap partition as Knoopix is installed on the hd, you can use the same swap partition. Thats all no. In fact you are in the best forum oh, and welcome :)
  24. problem of name resolution: DNS. you said that your DNS address are listed in resolv.conf. ok. what is the search order ? is your pc standalone or also connected on a LAN ? can you post your resolv.conf ? can you post the result of ifconfig -a ? can also be routing problem. see the "route" command. I'm don't know much about network but I post here all the questions I may ask to myself if I were you. hope this help
  25. finger crossed. According to Mandraksoft Flash link it's tomorrow ! They say it's not too late, I hope it's true. Anyway I've sent a e-mail of all the MPs of the area where I live with a copy of the nice MandrakeSoft text. almost all the french important politicians said they they are against patent on software. How could they let it go now ?
