    Solved

I didn't had to do anything. no link to make, no $JAVAxx to add. Btw, like devries says let's make it clear we are speaking of j2re, NOT the j2re-plugin

    Lmule

I'm with feralertx: you should at least try aMule

    Solved

Sorry but I think this package ftp://mandrakeusers.com/pub/Misc/j2re-1.4.2_01-1mdk.i586.rpm is easier to install than the sun's one: nothing to do. [at least it's the impression I had the last time: I tried to install the sun one, it didn't work, then I installed the one above, it worked]
  4. does that mean there is other solutions than smb (Samba) to make Linux servers / Windows clients communicate each other ? or do you mean the French state should switch the servers and the clients as well to Linux, all in a row ? ;)
  5. wasn't there some patent issue for example about Windows network protocols that are going to be impossible to emulate any more (Samba) ? That would make communication between Windows and Linux/*nix more expensive. That's just an example, I think there is many more, even on the server area.
  6. An other good thing is that the more the French state uses some free software, the less worried I am about software patent in Europe: Frankly I don't see the state to accept being bugged by anybody for a problem of software patent...
  7. Nice move. ok I was too pessimistic about french government. but that's servers right ? Next step is when it will try to install some desktop Linux or some free software like Open Office or Mozilla. It's more complicate. Lets see how it will do then when the basic civil servant is going to be involved and will have to change some habits
  8. http://www.digitalmars.com/ believe me there is no better one : compile fast programs that run fast .... and it's a little company, they are friendly, the main programmer, Walter Bright, is almost a genius -_- Also the forum is very reactive. afaik it's not open source .. (yet ?) but it's free. If you want a good idde, buy the cd: cheap for what it'll gives you. I hope you'll try, please report your impressions. Edit: forgot to say that DM C++ was the Symantec C++, witch was the Zortech C++, the first native C++ compiler for x86 ever.

    SPAM

At home I'm 100% Linux and I receive less than 5 spam/viruses a week. I had 0 spam/viruses for 2 years until I lended my e-mail address to my wife. She's part of a pupils's parent organization and gave it to some colleagues, all Windows and really basic users. The next week I had almost 40 spam/viruses :o It slowed down since but I couldn't completely get ride of that. At work, spam/virus are around 100 a week. The ICS server is Linux but the clients are Windows. It was worse before we changed our isp. We have our own name and our registar redirect this name to an other name at our current isp. The surprising thing is that when we changed of isp around a year ago, when we changed the redirection at our registar to the new isp, the number of viruses/spam was divided by four.???
  10. I believe there is, unless it has already been mentioned... No afaik it doesn't had been mentioned before in this thread. It should: thanks to be the first one. Isn't what we were talking about ? Is Mandrake Linux LSB compliant ? what is LSB legitimacy ?
  11. hmmm.. why don't we all switch to slackware then? ;) If everything is configurable with standard low level command or config files (the back end), that doesn't prevent distro to include some wizards (the front end) to deal with the back end. If there is a lot of different front ends, ISP or hardware manufacturers have trouble to make howtos for all of them. But they can bypass the front ends and deal directly with the back end witch should be standard. So a lot of different wizards are not a problem if they respect the work done by hand on the back end. I don't know YAST and used Linuxconf a while ago in RH 7.x so I don't know. Concerning MCC the trouble is that it often don't read the change done by hand on .conf files, and worse, it has its own config files and Mandrake often overwrite the standard .cong files at startup. That is the real problem IMO.
  12. I agree with that. everything must be configurable with cli or editing the same .conf file. At work it happens I have to do some hot line for software. I often work for complete newbies that at the beginning I had to tell them "hit enter" after you had entered "cd system", or often didn't know how to edit a text file. With them, and for everybody it's easier to explain by phone or with a howto, how to do things in CLI or editing a text file than "put the mouse on the Wizard icon, double click on it, select in the right windows the components you want to modify, keep the ctrl key pressed if there is more than one, right click still pressing the ctrl key, release the ctrl key and click on Configure, now click next, put the mouse on the text line at the bottom, click on it, Carefull do NOT change the line at the top, enter this number and this number, click on apply, then ..........." you see what I mean. Me I'm in an ISP that support Linux (Free.fr ;) ) The way they explain how to setup a connection is low level, cli, text file editing. Ok that' not very sexy but that works ........ well should work for any distro. That would already be a good start.
  13. Well, in this case, there is a lot of things that can be helpful for Object programming. Take electronic: each class is a component, and the main program is the board that links the component each other. :P Is is C++ that is helpful for discrete math/electronic or discrete math/electronic that is helpful for C++ ? Well discrete math knowledge could not hurt. But z transform, digital signal filtering, all that come with discrete math can be a little discouraging and not always useful for most of programs. VHDL or any Hardware Description Language could not hurt either as digital logic, as computer hardware knowledge. Concerning the question: me I've learned C++ with the Borland 3.0 Programmers guide. That was the good old time when the software were delivered with real paper books.
  14. ??????? :o ah tyme is kidding again :D you're kidding tyme isn't it ?
  15. No and No. If everything works out of the box as it's more and more often the case or if Linux come preinstalled, the answer is definitly No, If something don't work, just ask. To fix things, it's generally not a question of knowledge but a question of will. (imho)
  16. Hello ! I'm curious: how is it going ? does it started ? Are you going to try to understand the code ? do you find the entry point for each wizard ? is the code comented in english ? lot of questions
  17. Roland, I don't think you have to install Limewire as root. In fact, I think you have to install it seperately for each user. ok I should shut up sometime .... .... but he should install jre before and the one I linked, NOT the sun's one: the mandrakeusers one is better: it set the $JAVAxx things and everything needed.
  18. I've tried a lot of P2P progs and I agree with you about Gtk-gnutella :D For me the best are: Limewire and aMule. I use aMule because Limewire is java and use a lot of resource of by little config. [sorry if I repeat some things that had already been said] To install limewire: - first install java runtime environment (jre) there: link - then run a X console as root, cd to the directory where the .bin is and run as root: sh limewire<bla bla>.bin That's all To install aMule: a little more complicate: it seems the quality of the rpm is not very good concerning the dependencies, at least for me. It's on PLF, you must know what it is now ;) It will probably ask you for dependencies, you'll may have to install some manually.
  19. Hi, What's the name of the program ? A) if the name finish with ".rpm" that means it's a packaged program: easy to install: just type: urpmi <nameoftheprogram> on a console as root. To go to a console, you can do Ctrl-Alt F1, type "root" as login and enter the password. To navigate on the disk directory tree, type: cd <nameofthedirectory> You can just type only the first character of <nameofthedirectory> and type the tab key to complete the name. Very convenient :) cd .. goes one level up. cd / goes to the root directory (not the same as the root user ok ? ) when you're finish type Ctrl-Alt F7 to go back to X B) if the name of the program finish with .tar or .gz, that means you have the sources of the program and you have to compile it. - put the file on a directory - type: tar -xvzf <nameof theprogram> on a console as root (see upward) read the readme or install file. generally you just have to run make install If the program is a rpm, it's possible it puts an icon for you on the desktop and in the K menu. Else, the program must be in /usr/bin You just have to cut and past the shortcut on the desktop and double click on the icon to run it. The doc of the program must be in /usr/share/doc/<nameoftheprogram> See also: the Mandrake Control Center (MCC) -> RpmDrake
  20. ................. Thinking of it (the topic, not the monitoring thing ): finally even if the state don't do anything, that's good because it gives credibility to open source and that's a lot.
  21. other former civil servants ??? Certainly not: they know better than us how it is .... Well I'm half joking but I should stop before I go too far  I know there is a lot of nice person on the administrations (I know some) In fact overall they must be quite good as the system still more or less run despite it is very badly designed. But it is so discouraging, there is so much inertia that a lot got a negative mentality. That's not there fault but they forgot that they are here to serve, not to decide: it's the people (the president, the parliament) who are supposed to decide. Back to the topic: ... that's the reason why I'm quite skeptical: going open source is a change. In the French administrations they use to resist any change. [me slowly going to a political discussion without problem so far :P ]
  22. Since when you work for the state ? Carefull, that seems comfortable for now but that's dangerous: it's virtually bankrupt and when there will not have money any more you're going to be fired, and you're going to die of starvation: who is going to hire a former civil servant ?
  23. What you mean you cant seel that car ..... So fat it looks like code documentation is in English.... and I can probably get through the French ;) if I persist.... but hopefully you could be on hand to at least write up the basics in French for us sometime in the future ? My problem is I can't have one day or even half a day doing only one thing. I know by experience that it's impossible to code one hour here, one hour there. The time you get concentrate, remember what you did before, even if it's well documented, you start do be productive and reliable after one or two hours. I you have to continue a project you stopped long ago it's even worse. So, if you have some atomic things, one hours here, one houre there, and if my latency time is not a problem, ok I'm volonteer but I doubt that exist. Translation ? I'm afraid I'm not good enough. Well I can ask my wife :D , ok try me and lets see.
  24. NOT ME ! ... but you can't imagine how I wish to be we you. But I can't :( For those who have some spare time and some programming knowledge: GO WITH TYME and Gowator ! That's a nice idea, seems a project not too big, helpfull for everybody and Mandrakesoft and good start to make yourself a name on Linux world. ;) I can't help with time I don't have nor with money I don't have but I wish you good luck and success.
