  1. get kdeartwork from texstar, he has kmatrix and all those other screensavers
  2. it didn't make it in time for the release so they aren't on the cd.
  3. It works! It works with konqueror now (knew it was only a matter of time). Somehow those fine lads and lasses at kde central have found a way to make it (the mplayer-plugin) work with konqueror. I'm using kde 3.1 btw (mandrake cooker rpms, use at your own risk).
  4. Heck yes. at the install screen just type rescue and you should get the option to boot along with others things you mandrake partition.
  5. I think that what bvc and I are both trying to get at is that you shouldn't need to be updating so often so whatever problems you're having that causes you to update maybe we can solve. As for the menu there is AFAIK no "fix" for this. You see it's not a bug, it's a feature. Having said that I'm sure there's a way to backup your menu config and then overwrite the default mandrake menu after you update (if you insist on doing so). I don't know how this would be done because: a) I don't know much about the mandrake menu system and B) I don't know if you want to save the kmenuedit menu config or the mandrake menu config. Something that may help you however is the fact that all (most?) kde applications store their configuration in the .kde/share/config directory in your home directory. Maybe fiddadling around with that will help you.
  6. because dma access is faster than pio. If i'm not mistaken my cdrom uses pio but dvd play is still pretty flawless
  7. you sure your speakers plugged into the right port? Are you testing the sound by trying to play cds? Have you configured the sound with mandrake's provided utility (harddrake)?
  8. To answer your last question first, i think that most people here would tell you that Lindows is the demon-spawn and to stay as far away from it as possible. It's mostly because of a philosophical difference why the linux community has deemed lindows a sort of black sheep. I personally think it's the devil-spawn that you should stay as far away from as possible because of its price. At $99 a pop I could get a home version of XP or a professional upgrade of XP. To answer your other questions: yes the basic or the advanced yes
  9. You're welcome. That's what we're here for. The config messages do tell you what you need by the way. Yours was telling you for example that you needed libavcodec. You could have then search for that in google or rpmfind.net (which is how I usually find dependencies out- really useful when compiling something like kde) If you want to know more about compiling software and troubleshooting error messages I'd recommend the mandrake help files. They have a section on this and it's by reading it that I figured out a lot of this stuff.
  10. you can reconfigure it in harddrake to use alsa instead of oss emulation. I think you'll find that it sounds better (mdk 9.0)
  11. Well we'll just have to make it work :D Does your floppy drive work otherwise? what type of floppy drive is it (brand)? Have you tried using harddrake to configure the device. Is it listed in you're /etc/fstab/color] file?
  12. i'm using 9.0 too. mplayer compiles fine under gcc3.2 and I put up a tutorial in the tips and tricks section which is pretty much useless now since plf mirrors have mplayer rc3 packages. buut for those who want to compile from source ...
  13. hardly ever use the command line rpm command. Hell until a couple days ago I didn't even know there was an update command. So as for rpm -f no I'm not suggesting it's better cuz I've never used it. If it's worse than cooker (and I can't see how) how so?
  14. yah. http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=2644
  15. it's in cooker:!: muh-whahahahahahaha it's cooker time :D
  16. I don't understand what you're trying to say. You menu is fine until you use the update function in the mandrake 9.0 install? If so, the most obvious solution would be stop updating I'm sure you're problems can be fixed without updating everytime something goes wrong. Or is the update you refer to using mandrake rpmdrake tool?
  17. huh. ON to the first post: How's you X config file look. is 3d hardware acceleration enabled (post your config). This happened to me when whenever I was using my overheating processor but The whole desktop and mouse would freeze. Sometimes alt+control+backspace would work sometimes it wouldn't.
  18. next time I won't have to reinstall the whole OS. I think this should be put in Tips and Tricks. mods? anyone?
  19. doesn't look like you're compiling kdenetwork. looke more like kdeutils (cause it is!). If you ever stop a make for whatever reason you don't have to do make clean it will start from wherever it left off when you stopped the process.
  20. as for the ogle problem a fix for this is http://www.trylinuxsd.com/dvd/pages/page6.html. As for xine its probably not using XV as it's input plugin or you video card may be too slow. I have a 16 mb rage 128 and used to have this problem with my 533 MHz K6-2. Since you're specs are vastly better than mine you should definitely be able to get smooth playback. I usually fixed my prob by going into xine's directory and changing a couple letters. 1. Open up the file ~/.xine/config 2. Search for the line that has either Xv or Xshm in it. should look like this # video driver to use # string, default: auto video.driver:Xv if it looks like this # video driver to use # string, default: auto video.driver:XShm change it to this # video driver to use # string, default: auto video.driver:Xv For some reason it changed back to the XShm plugin every once in a while. Sometimes it was when I played a file with KXine and it crashed (damn porno) or recently it just did and haven't been able to hunt down why (use mplayer mostly now cause it can play quicktime) but whenever it happened i'd restart the computer (not init 1 then init 3) which solved the problem. so maybe that's you're problem. Hope it is.

  22. because Too much cooker is a bad thing. It's better to use the stable packages when possible which is why unless I want something specifically from cooker I disable it in the rpmdrake sources. The cooker packages since they are newer are automatically chosen as updates if they happen to be dependencies of an older package. Sometimes this is good and sometimes you restart you system and wonder why your fonts don't show up any more and why X is "respawning" too quickly.

    kdm (login prog)

AAAAAHHHHAAAAAAAA! If it's in /usr/local/kde/bin then the OS is not going to find it by default. You need to either add /usr/local/kde/bin to you're normal user's path too but you probably did this already since it's in the installation instructions for kde.
