and roll in the next version of mplayer has. mplayer is now 0.90. head to you local plf or start thee compilers. new plugin .7 is available too. achiesteel i have developed same prob too. i've given up on trying to fix it cause it really isn't that big of a deal for me.

and decoding doesn't seem to be the problem (at least open office can read .doc files just fine), encoding is. It's hard cause microsoft try to do their damndest to change their format around do only their software (and by same token, their OS) gets used.

i see no point for this. first of all as far as i know crossover plugin doesn't even work with 9.1 because of glibc reasons and secondly crossover plugin isn't free. If you're talking about using it with that annoying banner that pops up every ten seconds that not a better alternative either. Let's now combine that with the fact that wine apps are every bit as stable as their windows counterparts and we haev yet another vote over crossover. The fact that quicktime works way better now than it ever did on windows (for me) is even more reason to use mplayer and NOT crossover. The fact that all this is now in rpm format now makes kramset's argues invalid (which is why i posted this, you out there still kramset :)) and your comments unneccesary. the mplayer plugin is miles ahead of crossover's AND it free. Didn't mean for this to sound like an attack on you but i'm just trying to discourage anyone out there who'd be incline to use substandard software when something better is being offered. That only leads to more of kramset's linux isn't ready for the desktop arguments and ... well i'll end my rant now.

doin some brainstorming and came up with an ad hoc solution to my sound problems. Since it gets better with cpu usage i decided to use more cpu power so i compiled slicker with make && make && make and it work. Sound came back to normal! it is rather counterproductive as since you're making the cpu work harder it's going to raise the temp :) ok back to thinking up a better fix ...

well like i said i'm not near the box and won't be for a while but when i get the chance i'll do those commands. The pc is pretty old (4 years) has a 350 mhz processor but the network card came with cable service that was recently acquired (a year-ish) so i'd think that it's a pci card as well.

But my temp did go down by a whole degree celsius Well a lot of other people have had success if the mobo is listed and the sound is some which happens to older athlon cpus not athlon xp's. You more lucky your mobo is listed and you not using < athlon xp cpu oh yeah i forgot to mention, the sound gets better as cpu usage gets higher. for anyone feeling lucky or looking for a good tyme these are the commands setpci -s 0:0.0 6A=0x19 enable weirdness setpci -s 0:0.0 6A=0x18 disable weirdness

i can't post any errors i'm nowhere near it right now and won't be for a while. i don't know if it's isa or pci which is why i used both drivers. As a matter of fact, i don't even know what an isa card looks like.

plf does it all now! they have the new mplayer rpms rc5, all the plugins AND an mplayerplugin rpm is in contrib. It doesn't get easier than this folks. get your quicktime fix TODAY !

I'm trying to convert someone's pc to linux and i've tried mdk 9.0 and 9.1 and had the same problems with both. The problem is that i'm trying to get a ne2000 network card to work but i can't. It isn't autodetected by mdk 9.0 or 9.1 and I've tried both the pci and isa drivers for it. The message that i keep on getting from the network tool is the the driver cannot be loaded. Any suggestions. I have googled and know how crappy this card is but no suggestions on just buying a new network card. It's just not going to happen.

i didn't say that this was the kde default i said that i thought it was a feature. I know for one that suse puts the permissions so that it's unreadable by others. I also know that debian has a nice feature (which would make everyone here happy) to make the home directory world readable or private at install time. bookmarks, history of websites, and cookies aren't things i consider to be private (although i see how this could be :D ) and the passwords are encrypted (not just in a file anyone can read like, say, what gaim does) But i see how this could be a problem. I used to be paranoid about all this stuff when i ran windows. Since moving to the light however i've had more trust in my OS provider. For people who actually have more than one person using a computer, it does pose a potential problem. i don't know how important ssl certificates are but i don't give a rat's patootie about 'em but as you said, that's just me. I have been puzzled as to why only root view the things in /var/log though. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

i don't see it as a bug. it's more of a feature. i wouldn't want stuff in my kde directory to have the perms you listed because (1) there is nothing in there that important; so what if someone steals you're desktop config and (2) all important private stuff, kmail for e.g., has it's own protected directory. I'd rather be able to have one user see another users directorys since i use more than one distro but want the desktops to look/behave simlarly

you can get the src rpm and rebuild it for 9.0, otherwise i'd say check plf (no i haven't). :lol:

Well, unfortunately i proved myself right. i actually got past installing ut2003 but playing it is a whole 'nother matter. It freezes EVERYTIME i play the game.

well, everyone learns at some point :-) it's just one of those things that doesn't always go wrong, just goes wrong when you least expect it. and just to put an opposite spin on things i installed the drivers from within X and they worked too (but i had to reboot my computer)
