After much wailing and gnashing of teeth it looks like this may be a linux kernel bug which affects some Asus motherboards.

I tried various acpi apm options. Tried lilo vice grub. Here is a cut of the syslog from shortly before rebooting. This seems notable but I don't know what to do with it or if it is the problem. My HDD with Mandriva 2010.2 died so I purchase a new drive and decided to install 2011. Install went fine and I managed to get updates after using easy-urpmi to find working update servers. Also got rid of that butt ugly Rosa simple launcher. Anyway... When I restart my computer after shutting down with 2011 my MB BIOS reports a boot failure and to reset BIOS to defaults. Doing so is the only way to get the system to boot again. With my Windows 7 HDD installed I have no problems shutting down and restarting. Where should I look to fix this? ACPI or APM settings? Somewhere else? Are there logs I should be looking at? ****Warning: System BOOT Fail **** Your system last boot fail or POST interrupted. Please enter setup to load Default and reboot again. Hi John, There are numerous bug reports with regard to column views and column resizing in kmail on the KDE bug list. Many of them are marked as 'fixed' so I guess we just need to wait on Mandriva to update.

I had an orphan notice shortly after a nearly flawless upgrade from 2009.0 to 2009.1. There was a menu entry for Helix player (or maybe it was Totem) which would not run so I used MCC to remove it and upon completion it gave me a very long list of orphans. A quick perusal of the list showed an awful lot of important looking 2009.1 packages so I saved a copy for later examination. Having previously been bitten in the ass by long dependency lists when removing things has made me cautious.

I typo'd the nvidia-settings. Went back and fixed it. I was actually referring to 'usr'.

Not trying to be a nit picking *hole or anything but that should be: /usr/bin/nvidia-settings I'm sure daniewicz knew that but mistyped. I do that with 'usr' fairly regularly. :D

Heh heh. I've had this book, dog eared and bookmarked like crazy, laying open on my computer desk directly between me and the monitor for at least 3 years now. Its a great reference when you need it. I haven't really gotten any smarter when it comes to linux though. :unsure: My fault I'm sure.

Nah. I had lame selected. Just now I uninstalled grip 11mdvg and deleted the .grip files in my home dir and reinstalled grip11mdvg. Now I see the proper commands in the encoder command line. Just checked it out and it works fine. Edit: I went into my other user dir and had the same behavior. I then deleted all the .grip files in /~ and ran it again. This time it came up with the proper encoder line for lame. Seems I just needed to delete those files and all is well. Thanks Greg. angst

Got it. Checking it out. Hmm. I can't get it to write v2 tags unless I put '--add-id3v2' in the 'Encoder command-line' box. (which would be the behavior of the official repo version :huh: ) Maybe I am doing something wrong? Please don't spend too much time and trouble on this, Greg. Your efforts are appreciated but there are so many other ripping/encoding options I don't want to see you waste your time on a program that may be used by very few people. You probably have better/more interesting things to do. Plus I now know how to make the repo version spit out the proper tags. Thank you. angst

Regards, Götz Where Götz writes 'lame writes id3v4 while id3lib only supports id3v3', are id3v3 and id3v4 synonymous with id3v2.3 and id3v2.4? I guess the gist of the above is if you want want the repo version of grip to write id3v2 tags you need to go in Grip to the Config/Encoder/Encoder tab and in the 'Encoder command line' text box add the appropriate id3v2 option to tell lame what or what not to write. If you tell it to write a idv2 tag it will be id3v2.4. If you use Gregs Grip rpm then Grip (using id3lib) will write an id3v2.3 tag. Greg, Your Grip package seems fine. Installs, runs, removes, and reinstalls ok. And it writes ID3V2 tags as it should. I don't know if there is anything else I should for. Some kind of RPM or Error log maybe? Thank you for your time and effort. angst

It kind of surprised me when I realized Grip wasn't doing v2 tags. I have been using it for several years (ripped my whole CD collection with it) and then going in with easytag to clean up tags. Easytag was automatically converting them to v2 for me. I only noticed because a certain windows jukebox program was choking on the lack of v2 tags on a CD I had recently ripped and not yet edited. Getting it fixed up in a future release would be fine. Thanks.

Does anybody here have any insight into why Grip in the official 2009.0 repos doesn't have ID3v2 support compiled in? Just curious.

New to KDE4 but here is what I have figured out. I don't think you can have an icon directly on the desktop without creating a folder view widget. To get your menu entry back try this (from my settings. Yours may vary): Right click on the menu button and select 'Menu Editor'. (Mine is on the bottom left) Left click on 'Internet' and then select the 'New Item' button at the top. Type if 'Firefox Web Browser (Web Browser) and hit the ENTER key. In the right hand panel enter the following: Description: Web Browser Comment: Browse the Web Command: firefox %u Right click on the icon button at the top right of the right hand panel and select "other icons' and browse to /root/usr/lib/firefox-3.0.5/icons/mozicon128.png. In the menu view you can drag your new entry around to where you would like it to appear in the menu. Then left click the save button at the top of the menu editor window to save and update the menu. You should now have your menu entry back. Hope this helps. Edit: seems I found a way to get a desktop firefox icon. If you have an application launcher widget on your desktop (mine is in upper left corner) you can navigate application/internet/firefox and right click and select 'add to desktop'. Your widgets have to be unlocked for the 'add to desktop' option to appear. You can then position the widget as you like. There may be other ways to do it.

I was having the same problem with flash objects coming up blank on web pages when first loading but found that a page refresh would fix it. I'm not sure when it started as this is still a fairly fresh install of 2009.0 but I had upgraded the flash player from the Adobe web site. Anyway, I ran across a post which said if you had upgraded your flash player then you needed to remove libflashsupport. After doing so I had no more flash problems. Sorry I can't remember where I found the post (probably this board) in order to give props. Check to see if it is installed: rpm -qa | grep libflashsupport remove it: urpme libflashsupport Hope this helps. Harry

Just want to add a note that I have been running WoW on Mandriva 2008.1 with Wine 1.0 RC5 (I know there is a newer version) for a little over a month a month now and it has been rock solid.

daniewicz, Yeah. 2 cpu server version of yours. Old school motherboard but it was a looker back in it's day! :D Just trying to milk a couple more years out of it without spending much money on it before I go for a complete system upgrade. adamw, I will look into the BIOS settings. Hi all, I just upgraded the cpu's on my Asus A7M266-D motherboard from Athlon MP 2200's to MP 2600's and was wondering if there was anything I needed to do for the system software wise, ie reinstall the kernel or anything like that. Mandriva 2008.1 I wasn't expecting any really noticeable performance improvements and running HardInfo seems to confirm that. In fact in some of the benchmarks I seem to have lost a little ground and others slightly improved. Maybe normal variation. Maybe not. Anyway, one of the reasons I am asking is because Firefox has started randomly freezing up on me when loading web pages. Had it happen here and on the AVS (Audio/Video Science) forum. So far I have only seen this in Firefox. I played WoW for several hours last night and had no problems. Thanks, Sean
