  1. Here's what I got, Arctic: "error unmounting /home: Device or resource busy."
  2. That seems straight enough, Arctic. I did wonder what a second /home was doing under root. It had occurred to me to see if I could do anything through the control panel of PCLOS, running live off a CD, which is identical to that of MDV; but I don't think that should now be needed. Thanks. Keep that rope handy.
  3. Arctic, I'm generally happier working from the command line. Besides, I don't know what you mean by logging in as root. Things are set up so that I don't have to log in as anything. Will it not do to go straight into MCC? If I remember, that asks for the root password. As for backing up /home, I had in mind zipping everything and storing it on Windows D:. Adding PCLinuxOS to the Mandrake (or maybe it's called Linux) and the Windows on the MDV boot loader seems simple enough. Thank you. I may yell for a rope when I'm drowning.
  4. A related question, Arctic. I've had Win 98 SE and MDK/MDV for long. Just downloaded the "Minime" or bare bones version of PCLinuxOS. Am in it right now, running the CD live. Thinking it might be an idea to install it on hard drive and see what it's like. First, I shall have to create a partition or two on the /home of MDV. Don't know if MDV 2006 has a tool for that, and worry a bit about the PCLOS tool. Second, If I get the thing installed, what about the boot menu? I expect I shall have to edit the LILO config in MDV, assuming that PCLOS doesn't make its own LILO.
  5. Messy business, Ian. Density OK at right edge, low (but text still quite readable) at left edge. Printer works as it should in Windows. It gave no trouble in MDK 10.0 and 10.1 either.
  6. MDV 2006, Win 98 SE. My main printer, a Samsung ML-1450, works as it should in Win but not in MDV. The lines it prints are of the correct density at the right edge of the paper but become faint at the left edge. Removed and installed again. Got the same result with Foomatic + pxlmono, which is recommended, as with Foomatic + lj4dith. In MCC, the message "Could not install the CUPS printing system" was followed, without any action on my part, by "Restarting CUPS". How can something re-start which is not installed? In StarOffice 7, CTL-P brings up "Generic Printer", though the ML-1450 is an option. Both behave in the same way. In the same software in Windows, no trouble.
  7. Good show, Arctic the Earthling.
  8. You might find something if you search on this forum. All I can think of is another clean install, this time making sure to put in user name and password. Root (SU) will also need to be defined.
  9. Here's what I did, Sopwith, with MDK 10.0 and 10.1. Didn't need to do it when installing MDV 2006 since the partitions were there already, but did it on a friend's computer. Defrag C:, D: and any others used by Windows. Adjust their sizes with a partitioning tool so that they have the space they need and there's enough space for the three (at least) Linux partitions you'll need. There are several such tools, including some free ones. I used a quite remarkable piece of work called BootIt NG. After that, just shove in the first CD of MDV and keep going. Or the DVD. Best to go slow and think ahead at every stage. I cannot agree or disagree with the statement about GRUB, since I have always used LILO without trouble.
  10. Several months ago I downloaded Gaby, which described itself as a small and flexible data base program. I have tried intermittently to put my phone book into it, but haven't got anywhere. The help is remarkable in that it specifies some files' locations but not what their extensions should be, and speaks of tools (an example being the "Druid") which do not seem to exist. The phone list is part of my addresses file, which I keep in Foxbase (virtually the same as dBase III+) format and for which I have a form and queries in StarOffice. I'd like to have it quickly accessible without firing up StarOffice. Gaby actually opens with an address book and offers to import phone data in dBase or CSV format. Every time, though, it stops with the flat statement that the CSV file's format is no good. I shall appreciate advice from anyone who has worked with this program.
  11. Sopwith, all I can think of is that having saved text as text, you save the individual graphics one by one in whichever graphics format they are in: right clicking on each should give you this option. Once all are done, recombine them with the text in a new file in a word processor. There is the alternative of screen captures of the individual graphics, but you'll get low resolution.
  12. The world has changed, Scarecrow. Only an electrical engineer can change a light bulb.
  13. MrMandrake, OpenOffice 2 was not on the MDV 2006 I downloaded, nor Thunderbird 1.5, nor Firefox 1.5. Not so difficult to remove old versions and type "tar xzvf <filename>" to get moving with the new ones. In Thunderbird and Firefox, you might like to look at one of the options in the Help menu. KAlarm

Nothing seems to be wrong, Devries: all the alarms I set, work when they should. Just that I don't want a listing of all alarms displayed on booting, I want to set colour once and not bother each time, and so on. I'll see what happens if I change settings in kalarmrc (for H600 and W800, of course). Incidentally, kalarmrc was not to be found and I had to download it separately. This seems to be routine or at least common, since there was a special link to the text file.
  15. MrMandrake, if you are a Windows person, have what you need there, and are short of time, it's probably best that you stay there. No "intricate keyboard commands" are needed to install on Mandrake/Mandriva the software packages you name: of those, I have StarOffice 7, OpenOffice 2, Thunderbird and Firefox. All installed without a hitch, and I don't think any came as RPMs.

    KAlarm

The question is, Devries, if I start KAlarm from Konsole, will I be able to get to where I want to go, Preferences -> Konfigure KAlarm? I doubt it: as I said, the configuration window just doesn't fit on the screen. I cannot scroll up or down in it, I cannot re-size it, so I cannot click on "OK".
  17. What the devil might be going on in there, Daniewicz? You're quite right, Polemicz: after I removed Kat, things began to zip along. The removal took a while. I assume the index files also needed to be deleted.
  18. Thanks, Polemicz and Daniewicz. Off now to battle.

    KAlarm

Devries, I haven't ever started KAlarm from Konsole. All I want to do is configure -- oops, Konfigure -- the thing. I'll go look for the files in the places you name. Thanks.
  20. I understand, Isadora and Daniewicz, that removing founts *used by the system* leads to catastrophe. There's a whole lot of them, though, strangely called "decorative". I don't think the system uses them, so zapping them can do no harm. If only I knew where they are tucked away, I could simply rename them and see what happens. Daniewicz, I'm on the verge of removing Kat. Thing seems to think I have no memory.
  21. Hullo, Ian. No, I'm not sure, only paranoid in a pathetic sort of way. I'll do what you suggest and see if it makes a difference to speed. It won't do anything, though, about my having to wade through two dozen to find one I want.
  22. There are many founts (well, all right, "fonts" in Yankese) in my MDV 2006 installation which I wouldn't dream of using. They make it difficult to find the ones I want and, being suspicious by nature, I think they may be connected with the fact that 2006 runs a good bit slower than 10.1 did. When I go to remove any of them, I am confronted with a list of locations or files (four, I think). I cannot understand what I should do without ruining my installation. Help appreciated.

    KAlarm

I could configure KAlarm as I wanted in 10.1 but am unable to do that in 2006. The window goes off the screen, so buttons like "OK" and "Cancel" are not visible. I was and am on 800 x 600 and have tried other resolutions too.Is there a way to do the job in Konsole? Snooping about didn't bring up a configuration file.
  24. Hand me my light sabre, please, Alloh. You *have* recharged its batteries?
  25. Ah, Ian, there you are. I knew the monkey must be lurking somewhere. What you say is a relief; though it does make one nervous when things don't do what they're meant to do or what they pretend to be there for.
