  1. OK, I feel stupid...but how do you get the fonts within eterm a different color? If I missed it in all the previous posts..please excuse my moronic nature! Though...I have a blue-ish background as it is, and the blue standard font for folder archives just isn't readable. Thanks!

  2. Hello everybody,

I just installed the trial of VMWare, which is completely awesome! (for those of you who don't know...it allows you to run a virtual machine instance of windows on your linux box, or visa versa. This allows you to run -any- windows application within linux, as it's really running within windows...which is within linux...)

However, two questions have arrised. Does anybody know of a way to allow the windows VM to make use of the hardware acceleration of my 256MB video card? The driver that installed through VMWare is just a weak one...and even counter strike won't allow me to use anything but software acceleration. No OpenGL Or D3D will work.

Secondly, my mouse sensitivity is OFF THE CHARTS! within the windows VM, it's fine. But in Counter strike, even when set to the lowest sensitivity, even the slightest move of my mouse will jolt my gun to the sky. Any fix to this?

    Thanks!

  3. This happened to me about a week ago on my MDK10 installation. Here's how I fixed it:

Rebooted in failsafe mode. Everything booted up fine.

Rebooted in normal "linux" mode. Everything booted up fine.

It seems that booting in failsafe repaired whatever font directories were not present, and allowed me to boot again in normal mode.

Give that a whack, if you havn't reloaded everything yet.

  4. By the way...tip for all you who may not know...

When installing a game/application which uses multiple install cd's, have two terminals open. One to run the .sh file (or whatever it is) from, and the other to unmount the cdrom drive. For some reason, I could never unmount from the same term I started the install from. only when I opened an additional term would it let me unmount from that new term.

UT2004 works awesome in linux :)

  5. Awesome, thanks!

One last question, can I get rid of the "dividier" lines that are in between each section of the taskbar? IE: in between the application icons and the multiple desktop section, there's a line dividing the two. Any way to get rid of it?

  6. Hi,

I'd like to add a "workbar" or "second taskbar" if you will, for icons such as folders etc.. which are on my desktop. I've seen them before, but am not sure how to make one. It's just a standalone bar that holds icons, nothing else, and can be positioned at any edge of the desktop desired. I can't find an app with Super Karamba for it, nor anywhere else. Help? Thanks

    :thanks:

  7. Hi everybody,

So Firefox is all installed and working well, however it's not being assigned the icon set that is included with the package. Is there anyway I can make it recognise the icon set, and to manually specify the icon to use?

    Thanks in advance :thanks:

  8. You said you tried setting one up manually, which did not work. Did you delete the previous network profile configuration first? Try deleting all network connections you have from the Mandrake Control Center (mcc from terminal) and then set a new one up. That will stop the network service and restart it with fresh settings. If this doesn't work, what type of connection do you have? What type of network card (if it's cable/dsl that is), if not what modem?

  9. Hey everybody,

So WineX won't run any of my programs, as explained in another post. I tried to run counter-strike using wine, which opened it, but Cstrike wants the CD key agian. No problem, however I can't type anything in the prompt that wants the cd key! I click on the window, start typing, and it types it in the terminal. How do I get it to allow me to type the cd key in?

  10. Hey everybody,

Thanks for all your help in getting my system working! I've got everything re-installed and working well. The only thing that isn't (besides my firefox not showing up in my app list as mentioned in previous posts) is that when I'm playing a DVD or CD, the system sounds don't play anymore. They do without a DVD or CD being played though. I have the arts sound system enabled, everything is turned on and functional in that respect. Any other ideas you may have to get kopete, or any other system sounds to play while DVD/CD's are playing?

    Thanks

  11. Turns out that even though my onboard audio was dissabled...linux still was trying to use it as the primary source. I took out my SB LIve 5.1 and re-enabled the onboard (which surprisingly turns out to be better...) and everything works great again. Though, I still can't get the mozilla firefox icon to be associated with the app...anyway to specify the icon through term?

  12. Thanks for the suggestiont!

However, update-menus -v didn't do much of anything. All the newly installed software still will not show in the menu, even ones that mandrake installed from it's own cd.

On the sound issue, I know how I got it to play CD's and whatnot, but I was never able to get it to play system sounds and application sounds. It shouldn't have a problem wth my soundcard, it's only a SB Live 5.1. I also have onboard sound which I've dissabled through the motherboard, but maybe I'll unplug the SB and try just the onboard It's weird though, when I booted with Knoppix, the system sounds played just fine. I don't know.

The third suggestion....I've been using that for the past 10 years...I really don't want to have to be doing that anymore! hah

  13. Alright, so I re-installed (even chose to format the entire disk and start from scratch). First boot...no audio again. Furthermore, all my applications installed (even from the mcc software section) don't show in my application meno on the desktop. Firefox won't show in the browser section also, I installed that to the default directory, as well as /usr/lib and /usr/share.

Maybe with my higher-end hardware, linux just isn't the option for me.

  14. Yeah, as seen in my post about not being able to mount a drive in knoppix...my system is very hosed. I did as the readme instructions said (from the nvidia drivers) to fix an OpenGL problem, and my system won't boot into linux anymore. I'll re-install tomorrow when I get home from work...right now I need to get some sleep :) I'm just glad that the webserver I've implemented at my workplace isn't hosed! It's working great, just loaded the .mdb database today and everything is working like a charm. (mostly with the help of mandrakeusers.org!)

    Thanks MDKusers.org!

  15. Ok, so I had a problem with OpenGL (as stated in my post: http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=18805 ) and the readme told me to delete the line in /etc/security/console.perms relating to <dri>. So I did...and now my MDK 10 won't run. It says it can't mount the superblock, errors in the console.perm file. etc etc etc.

Beforehand, I made a backup of console.perms, of which I can't revert back to because even as root, it won't let me overwrite (saying it's read only).

So, I put Knoppix on a CD to mount the drive from there and overwrite, but knoppix won't mount the drive.

    root@ttyp0[knoppix]# mount /mnt/hdg1
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdg1,
or too many mounted file systems

    Whats up with this?

Anybody know how I can reload my console.perms.backup file back to the console.perms file, or at least just edit the console.perms and add the deleted line back in without giving me a "read-only" error? I even CHMOD the file from root...no luck.

  16. OoooOOOOhhh wonderfull... The readme file that the error brought up told me that in order to fix the permissions problem, I needed to delete the line associated with

    <dri>

within the /etc/security/console.perms file. What a can of worms that opened up!

Now my superblock can't mount the drives, and says my filesystem is not working as it should. As this is the only change I've done, I'm sure that's the cause of it. Good thing I backed up the original file before editing it...now I just gotta download and run Knoppix to reload the backup over the main. Cross your fingers....I hope this works...I really don't want to have to reconfigure my whole linux install again....
