  1. My only guess is that f you have a 3 color + black cartridge that the images are accually being printed using a mix of the three colors to make black and white images And the text since it prints in a different way uses just the black part of the cartridge. So the black part of the cartridge is either dirty or running out of ink or the contacts are not working right. Try everything and post back. The new drivers might have changed how the ink is used a little in order to try to save more ink. Try converting the text page to a graphic page and printing that. Try to print a color page then the same page after converting to BW. Also try to print the color image directly to BW. Also try printing a BW image using the color drivers. IF you see a change in these images then its the way the cartridge is being used. They should all come out looking the same.
  2. Dang everything sounded great untill the last bit. That part sounded like a warning about another "funding" drive.
  3. Nice long winded article. But the basic premic is still flawed. how is the update done? Since it MUST be done online then all the computers in the world that do not have the chip and ALL the chips made outside the US will NEVER get the updates so ALL the codes and serial numbers will still be on the trusted list.(There won't be a list to update) I.E. I can copy and modify then till my heart is content. I will ALWAYS be able to buy a chip from outside the US no matter what law is passed. The ONLY groups this will effect at first will be the in the buisiness sectors. So as soon as ONE application that they want doesn't make it to the list or is dropped for ANY reason then you will see this law tanked faster than it was made. Now since linux runs or will run almost half of the internet servers and many of the office machines in the next few years whats the first and second OS the BIG companies will want? And do you really think that they will be denied the right to use it? And what about the Xbox/linux problem? Exactly what chip can't be replicated and replaced in a computer? I realy do hope this law IS passed. It would be tantamount to taking my guns. They can have them when they take them from my cold dead fingers. America is NOT Great britan, Australlia or China. The market outcry will make everyone deaf. Oh and I don't think our Prez or administration had anything to do with the M$ verdict. The whole case was a pile of junk writen up in a sloppy fashon. I'm not saying M$ was innocent of anything but even I could have shot holes in the case from a mile away. I see it everyday in multitudes of smaller cases, the prosicuters case is valid but weak so they take a lesser penalty just to get something for all their effort. So in the end I don't think HE or the administration will have anything to do with making this come about. Anyone in congress who is talking about this is really just looking to shake someone down for a few million in campain contributions, no one wants this. No one BUT the recording industry and M$, who think of themselves as a publisher. If you want to find out who MIGHT vote for this look to who goes to who's parties and hobnobs.
  4. In my opinion. Palladium or anything like it will fail totaly. No because of any philosofical belief but in the plain fact that " if man makes it man can break it". You have to think of this as a type of lock. Given time( something we know we'll always have) the code can and will be broken or emulated. So since it can be( all things can be)hacked then the thing will have to have a way of being updated by software on the net. And since it can be reprogramed then it can be turned off or rendered useless. I don't think a million computer users in china are going to let this work for long. Just look at the Xbox. Even M$ is starting to give up on securing that one. And they have a billion dollers to just throw at the problem. As soon a hack is out for it, and the company that is supposed to keep track of and update the code can't block the hack, then every corporate user out there that thought this was going to keep them safe will rethink their choice. Can you imagine the lawsuits coming out of this," Use our chip and code and you'll never be hacked again". I for one would sue the pants off of the chipmaker for failing to keep their end of the deal. Billions could be lost if just one bank is hacked or just one credit card company is intruded on. Let alone if a code can be found to shutdown or lock up everyones computer with this in it. Go online, get your e-mail and BAM your computer is shut off untill you change the chip. And M$ thought the slapper virus was bad this weekend.

    MDK5sums

If you are truely worried about the md5sums that come from the mirror sites then you could easily compare the the md5sum numbers. If the download ISO's are the same then the numbers should be the same from site to site. Just make sure your comparing the same ISO version.
  6. No problem! I knew we could get it worked out.
  7. Everything is in a gui. Basicly i've run into problems with Mandrakes expert setup. If I choose expert setup and choose alll of my partitions no matter how large or what order i place the partitions in Mandrake NEVER gets the right size and stops my install. If I tell it to autoallocate it finds the right size of the partitions everytime. More than likly just my disks or hardware. You'll have to remove the 10gig partition otherwise mandrake can't find any empty space to autoallocate. It might try/ask to use the whole disk if you don't. By the way. None of this accually changes the hard drive at all untill you tell it to write the new partitions. So you can change anything you don't like at anytime and the old partitons are still there. Basicly your making a new map for the program to use.
  8. The cable should have come with either the cdrom or sound card. If not then find a local shop that does computer work, the cables are cheap and they probobly have few laying around. You will need to install it from the back of the cdrom you want to play audio from to the input pins on the sound card. Linux needs it to play directly to the sound card so your computer does not slow down playing music.
  9. I might be wrong but I think that since the US GOV is putting out the game they can't charge for it since your tax dollers have already paid for it. I got 2 copies of the windows game for free. I would think that all you would have to do is download the linux stuff from their website or ask for a linux copy in the mail. The US Army produced the thing out of their promotional budget, it was cheaper than 30 seconds of airtime during the super bowl, even including printing and shipping.

    Internet annoyances

I believe the IrDA connection is your Infrared Data Access port(or something like that). And since you didn't know what it was that meens you probobly don't have any infrared devices, so you can turn it off so that it never gets started. The shutdown problem is realy not a problem but just the computer waiting for the isp's return signal. If the computer knows its not connected then it never asks the ISP for a return signal. I.E. no wait at shutdown. As for the "connection at start up problem". I can only hazard to guess that something between your computer, the ADSL modem or your ISP is causing a fuzzy signal. If your computer doesn't get a good return signal from the ISP at start up it assumes your not connected. Check for loose/bad wires and ask the ISP if they know of a way to test or clear up the signal from their end. They might send someone out to fix things if they can. You pay more for ADSL so expect more.
  11. Do you have the small cable attached to the cdrom and sound card? Which cdrom does not work to play audio cd's? have you tried the other? If Kscd runs but your getting no sound then it found the audio cd but the problem is in either getting the sound to the sound card(need the cable or the app cdread)or getting the sound out of the card to the speakers(cheaking the mixer app)
  12. What errors did you get? You're going to have to help us out here we are not at your computer.
  13. Are you trying to same any data on this system? Doesn't winXP have its own boot loader? I don't have it so I don't know for sure. What partitions in your setup are used for what? You need to find room first in order to install linux. You can loose boot magic because Lilo does the same job. Does all of your hardware work with linux? Look up everything first. You might find that half of your stuff doesn't work.
  14. Setting up a connection using a router is easier than in windows. Just set your connections to DHCP and default and evrything should connect right off the bat. Routers like the Linksys are designed to be invisable to your computer if set up the right way. As for using the partition for linux. Use the expert disk drake partitioning utility in the GUI installer of Mandrake. Remove the NTFS partition. The make a 10 gig patition formated fat32. Then format the rest of the drive fat32. Now since you have a NTFS(winXp) partition, a 10 gig fat32 partition and a 30 gig fat32 partition remove the 10 gig partition and tell diskdrake to autoalocate the 10 gig space. This will make your 3 linux partitions and give them a good size. When it asks tell Mandrake to mount the 30 gig fat32 partition and you'll have access to it from linux/Mandrake. Just tell the boot loader that you choose to use(I use Lilo) that you would like to be able to boot into the windows os also. Then you can boot to each.
  15. Its a real good game. And since the US Gov is putting it out, its FREE. No ads no problems. And the game has had all of the playing problems worked out already. Now to see if all the linux problems can be worked out.
  16. I think I might. I didn't at first because i thought my brother would be logging onto this pc also and would want to setup everything himself the way he liked. but since he has since said no to that idea then its all mine to modify anyway I like. So I probobly will be doing that latter today. I've tried icewm and gnome but just didn't feel comfortable with them then. Now that I feel a little more comfortable modifeing them I'll try them more often.
  17. To the best of my knowledge (which is little) Putting the starting scipt in xinitrc starts the xscreensaver when xstarts and placing it in the Autostart directory starts it when KDE starts. Both do almost the same thing. but since I almost never use a desktop other than KDE i don't need it to start when X does. But I might change it eventualy. And thanks for the corections!
  18. First you'll need to get the RPM's from freshmeat. Or just look up Xscreensaver on the net. Second you'll have to make sure you have the GLX drivers installed. If you have Gnome installed then the GLX drivers are in already. You'll have to turn off the screensaver in KDE. I use KDE so I can only tell you how in KDE. The others are probobly the same. Install the Xscreansaver RPM from an xterm screen. You'll have to make and edit a file to auto start it when KDE starts. From Xterm screen change to root mode. Change to directory /home/(yourusername)/Autostart/.kde/ I use VIM to edit and make files. So type vim /home/(yourusername)/Autostart/.kde/launch-xscreensaver This makes the file and starts vim to edit it. Insert this into the blank file. #!/bin/bash xscreensaver -nosplash Write and exit the VIM file. You might have to look up VIM comands but they are easy and simple. Now you'll have to make the launch-xscreensaver file exacutable. Still as root, type chmod +x /home/(yourusername)/Autostart/.kde/launch-xscreensaver If I remembered everything the right way and you got through all this ok then the next time you start KDE the screensaver will automaticly start. You can edit everything about it by editing the xscreensaver-config file that extracting the RPM put into your system. Of course all of this is also in the readme files and on freshmeat. If anyone sees that I have screwed something up or forgot something then please correct my post. It has been several months since I did this.
  19. just install the new distro right over the old one. reformating the partitions is easy and you shouldn't even have to change their size. You can just edit your boot loader to point to the new distro and at the same time edit out the old one.
  20. Get a windows boot disk for Xpee. Use linux to reformat all of the linux partitions and remove them. Use the windows disk to remove the linux boot loader with the comand " MBR R " this remakes a windows Master Boot Record. I think thats how you do it. I have never wanted to ever remove linux so i've never done it.

    Burning a CD

Maybe the Slave/Master pins are not set properly? Having two cdrom devices on the same ide cable causes problems sometimes. One reading faster than the other confuses the IDE channel. Maybe you tried all this, I haven't read all the replys.
  22. Have you tried looking up the camera on the web. It might need a specific driver for the camera, not just an app to see its picture.

    DVD-RAM?

    Are the cables connected correctly?

    Burning a CD

I don't think you can mount a blank disk. Don't quote me on this though.
  25. I'm running Mandrake 9.0 and the scanner was hooked up when i origionaly loaded mandrake. Since then i updated sane and Xsane. Don't know if the update did much since the scanner worked right off the start. It even gave me the desktop icon in KDE.
