  1. Arctic - thanks for your response but I am a total newbie. How do I do what you suggested? Thanks, C
  2. Hi, I am trying to add a launcher to my panel that runs the command "ifup eth1" The problem is that I need to be root in order to run that command. Is there any way to create a launcher that runs as root in the terminal? Mahalo, Craig
  3. Hi, Every time I try to browse to my /mnt folder, there is a long delay before the items appear. I may have caused this problem when trying to mount a diskonkey usb device or a couple of external usb hard drives. Is there any way to clean up some settings so my system doesn't continue to look for these devices when they are not plugged in? Mahalo, Craig mandrake 10, gnome [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  4. I hope by posting this message I save someone the 3 hours it took me to figure out what was going wrong with my attempt to export a document from open office as a PDF file. I had a large (45 page) document with some intricate formatting and inserted graphic files. When I would go to export it as a PDF a couple of pages would look really wierd with text and images moved to strange locations around the page. I thought I had some strange formatting issues surrounding the images I had inserted and tried every different solution I could. The trick that finally made the export work smoothly was to remove a couple of fractions that were included in the text (e.g. I changed 1/4 to 0.5 and 3/4 to 75%). Stupid bug with the export program. Hope none of you have ad the same problem and given up before figuring it out. Aloha, Craig [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  5. Answering my own problem here, had to edit /etc/lilo.conf to include the following: other=/dev/hda3 label="WindowsXP" table=/dev/hda hda3 is the location of my windows partition. Hope this thread helps someone else. Thanks to all of you for helping me....
  6. Well after playing around for a while I got it to install windows. The only explanation I can think of for the initial problem of it not liking the install location was that it was too small. I made it a 5 gig partition at first and it wouldn't work, but when I gave windows the entire remaining 35 gigs as one partition, the install went smoothly. Now I have another problem. I got windows working, then I rebooted with my Mandrake CD 1, went to rescue mode, reinstalled the boot loader, and now I don't have any option to boot into windows. Do I have to put some code into the lilo config file for it to know windows is another option? Mahalo, Craig
  7. Hmmm... Not working. I tried creating 2 new partitions with diskdrake - both fat32. Then I go to install windows on the first one and it won't work. Tells me that the partition is not windows compatible and I need to reformat it. I try that and it still doesn't work. Does windows xp need a different file system to be installed on? can I create it using diskdrake?
  8. Wow you guys are fast at responding, great Liquidzoo, I have the CDs so it sounds like it will be easy. MadDog - I am a newbie and am not really sure what a Linux extended partition is. Here is how my hard drive is et up right now: / - a 5.8 gig partition that shows up as journalized filesystem: ext3 swap - 494 mb linux swap partition /home - 14 gig journalized filesystem: ext3 and finally 35 gigs of empty space How would you recommend I set up the windows partitions? It would be nice to have a fat32 partition that could be accessed by both operating systems. Should I do this with Mandrake disk manager or during the windows installation? My /home partition will not be visible in windows right? Thanks so much for your help...
  9. Well I am a total newbie and it looks like I screwed up. After I had a complete windows failure and lost a whole hard drive full of info, I decided to give Linux a try. After struggling through and learning how to get Mandrake working with my wireless card, external hard drives, cameras, and everything else, I have grown to really enjoy linux. But, I need windows on this computer too. All of the dual boot posts I have seen on the linux forums say to install windows first. Is there anything I can do to save all the settings and files I have for my smoothly operating linux setup before starting from scratch? I have a large unused partition on my hard drive that I could install windows on, but the posts here seem to say that is not the right way to go. I'm using Mandrake 10 and Win XP pro. Mahalo, Craig
  10. Thanks Fahd, it worked - you are my hero
  11. I have been led to believe from posts here that I can read files off of an NTFS formatted external hard drive. I can't find any detailed instructions as to how to do this. I have 2 external drives, one is FAT 32, the other is NTFS. When I plug either of them in, they are recognized and an icon appears on my desktop. The problem is that both of them show up in /etc/fstab as vfat. If I click on the icon for the FAT32 drive I can access it no problem. The NTFS drive appears to be blank (although I know it isn't). Is there some way to teach my system how to distinguish between these two file systems? I've tried connecting through USB or firewire with no difference. I'm running 10.0 and am a total newbie. Mahalo Craig
  12. how do I find out what type of network config I have?
  13. I just tried another user and nothing loads at all - just a blue screen and then it freezes.
  14. I recently had to do a fresh install of Mandrake 10.0 and now after booting there are no icons on my desktop and nothing happens when I right-click on it. I can't add anything to it either. I can run applications from the menu bar but the desktop ain't working. I'm running GNOME 2.4 Any suggestions for this newbie? Mahalo, Craig
  15. Well I finally got my wireless network working which is a great bit of progress. Unfortunately, it is very slow. When I do a speed test at the bandwidth speed test website, the very best results I have ever gotten are 200kbps when wireless and I typically get 1.3Mbps when connected by ethernet. It seems the longer I am online, the slower my wireless connection gets. I hate to say it, but this doesn't happen when booted to Windows 2000. Any advice? Oh yeah - I am a new new newbie so if you have suggestions it really helps me if they are spelled out in the simplest terms. Mahalo, Craig Linksys WPC 11 ver. 3 Mandrake 10.0 GNOME 2.4
  16. Yeeeeee-Hawwwwwwww I am sending this post from my wireless connection!!!!! Just for everyone's info, I ended up having to reinstall Mandrake. I must have botched something up somewhere along the road while playing with all the configurations. Steve, thanks for your input. Linux and Linux users are the best!!!
  17. Newbie question here -- Is it possible to set different wallpaper for each of my 4 desktops on GNOME? I'm running 10.0. Mahalo, Craig
  18. Howdy, Everything was working great with Mozilla until this morning. I had a bunch of bookmarks that were all organized into convenient folders, but now they have disappeared. And my e-mail folders and rules are all gone too. Anyone know how to fix this? Mahalo, Craig
  19. Didn't work Steve. Here is the output after typing dump_cis Socket 0: no CIS present Socket 1: no CIS present What to do????? Thanks
  20. Hi everyone, First let me say these forums are incredibly valuable. I am amazed at how much time people spend helping other folks with their problems. I am a complete newbie having just installed Mandrake 10 (my first foray into Linux) last week. This is my first post to this group, so I apologize if I am not following proper procedures. Now my problem. I have been trying to get my wireless LAN to function and have been having no luck. The hardware I am using is: Dell Inspiron 8100 Laptop Linksys Instant Wireless 802.11b Ver. 3 So far I have done the following (and believe me I take great pride in getting the following steps to finally work since I had been using nothing but Windows for the last 10 years): Successfully compiled and built my new kernel (2.6.3-15mdk) Installed the PCMCIA package (pcmcia-cs-3.2.8) Installed the wireless tools package (wireless-tools.26) All the installs have finally worked without any errors reported and I have followed the instructions on the included readme files as closely as possible. When I install the card, the 2 green lights on the card are lit and steady. I don't hear any beeps or get notified of any new hardware or anything. When I follow LiquidZoo's instructions from LT-01 and type "/sbin/cardctl ident" I get the following output: Socket 0: no product info available Socket 1: no product info available There must be some configuration I have missed somewhere that is prohibiting my card from being recognized. Please help me. Thanks in advance, cmus
