  1. I have found on Mandy 2010.2 that some packages appear to install and then I cannot find them. For example, I installed kdewebdev and I cannot find Quanta Plus anywhere. Anybody else having these problems?

It is good to see some traffic on this forum again.

    Thanks,

    Banjo

To me it seems kdewebdev4 does not install much more than:

    ‎/usr/share/doc/kdewebdev4

    ‎/usr/share/doc/kdewebdev4/README

For Quanta i can't give you any information, for i cannot install it through MCC.

    I am using Mandriva 2010.2-64bits.

  2. Same experiences here.

Use Mandriva and KDE for many years.

And together with KDE KMail got introduced.

My wife still used it until lately, when big troubles arose with KMail.

I have a workaround, i translated for you from Dutch into some kind of English.

It was the way i converted mails from KMail to Thunderbird.

In KMail create maps for PostIn, Sent items, Archive and/or others (depends on what maps you have)

Be aware, these new-made maps must be of type "mbox".

Next step is to copy messages from the original maps to the new-made-ones.

In Dolphin (or whatever filemanager): copy the mbox-maps to the thunderbird-profile-map:

(/home/.thunderbird/pkh8vohu.default, or some name similar ) of Thunderbird.

You can find the mbox-maps in:

    /.kde4/share/apps/kmail/mail

Addressbook imported by use of LDIF.

Wish you all good luck and a shiny Thunderibrd-experience.

  3. Installed here as well, no problems during installation.

Updates during installation works , as expected ;-)

Flash-install went smooth after clicking link in Youtube-video for installing Flash, very nice.

Rock-stable so far, and great expectations for the official.:thanks:

  4. John,

Using your webcam in VLC, the following workaround should work:

    In VLC->Media->Open capture device...

...under "Device Selection" fill out for "Device name": /dev/video0

(In my case it was /dev/video1, because there is another webcam integrated in

    my laptop).

    When done, hit the "Play"-button.

  5. John,

Maybe something else you can take a look at, is v4l2cup.

Nice tool for fiddling around with different settings, and testing.

  6.

The only disappointment I have with Mageia is that a number of my preferred applications are or seem to be missing, namely......knemo, xmms, apcupsd plus gapcmon, and mahjongg3d. There may be others and they may all still appear in the final release.

    Cheers. John.

You are absolutely right John. There are still many packages waiting for

    introduction.

Anyone is encouraged to fill out a "New RPM package request" through Bugzilla:

    https://bugs.mageia.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Mageia&format=guided

As for knemo, there has already been placed a request:

  7. John,

When i connect my webcam, no activity-light is shown on my webcam neither.

But when opening Cheese (for example) instantly the activity-light on the cam

is showing up. And the cam produces pictures.

In MCC->Hardware the webcam-information showing up, is as follows:

    Identification

    Vendor: ‎Logitech, Inc.

    Description: ‎QuickCam Pro 9000

    Media class: ‎Video|Video Control

    Connection

    Bus: ‎USB

    Bus PCI #: ‎2

    PCI device #: ‎3

    Vendor ID: ‎0x046d

    Device ID: ‎0x0990

    Misc

    Module: ‎uvcvideo

  8. Have no similar configuration at hand, but would guess one could tweak

configuration-settings through NVIDIA X Server Settings -> X Server Display

    Configuration.

At beforehand i suggest to check first through Mandriva Control

Center under hardware in set up graphical server that "Enable duplicate display

    on external monitor" is set.

Now you should be able to enable TwinView.

  9. Downloading through Ktorrent mageia-1-Beta2-DVD-i586.iso went pretty smoothly,

    approximately two hours.

Installation in a virtual machine (VMPLayer 3.1.4 build 385536) went without

    falter.

The familiar rituals that everyone knows by now.

Configuration used for the virtual machine:

    * RAM: 1500 MB

    * Hard disk: 50 GB

Installation to reboot, including updates (only 4 packets) lasted 24

    minutes.

Reboot went smoothly without errors in desktop.

Ready-to-use desktop (all starts) in Alpha 2 in 77 seconds.

For the Beta 2 was 53 seconds.

When installing a package message appeared, saying that the CD-ROM

    CoreMedia could not be found.

Have this medium disabled via "Software Management" now.

installing Flash Player plug-in went without difficulty through "Software

    Management ". Flash worked flawlessly.

And then just a short test for libre-office.

It took 35 seconds before I could begin in a text document.

In a second attempt I could start using a new text-document within 12 seconds.

And a libre-office calc document I could use after 12 seconds.

So far very pleased with this next version in the preliminaries.

  10. Hi John,

    Have a Logitech webcam myself.

For Windows i had to install a whole bunch of things, but in Mandriva it worked just out-of-the-box.

Need to say, i have another type/model, Logitech Pro 9000.

Very nice cam this C910 HD.

    Good luck,

    isadora

PS: And a little something to read.

  11. Don't think one can say "MandrivaUsers-forum" is dead, no.

But i can tell, activity has been greater in former periods.

Same thing is happening to the Mandriva-forum, especially the English part of it.

And also the Mandrivaclub.nl-forum, in my own country, experiences a drop-down.

For where it concerns Mageia, this distribution does not have a forum yet.

Topics are set up for Mageia in the aforementioned forums, and are neither over-populated.

On the other hand, one could say, all Mandriva-users are quite satisfied with their distribution, and don't have reasons to visit.

But your idea about changes of population since the overtake of Mandriva S.A., i also could second.

Let's hope for the best, and maybe the introduction of Mandriva 2011, later in the year, will spark things up.

    Edit: Mageia has a mailing-list-forum.

  12.

If I regularly perform updates is it worth using?

When updated 2010.1 regulary, you're system should be at 2010.2 right now.

It is no more and no less then an 2010.1 including all updates for it.
