  1. I just had my wife check the kernel information and my kernel is 2.6.3. What should I do now?
  2. I tried Kmix last night, but I couldn't find anything that was muted. I also couldn't find any settings for front and rear setup. I tried installing alsamixer gui and here's what happened...it asked me to insert disc 2 so I did. It installed some stuff and then asked for disc 4, so I put that one in. After examining disc four, it said "this package contains bad signatures. Do you wish to install anyway?" I chose no because I didn't know what would happen if I had installed it. What should I try now? I've got an awesome multimedia speaker setup and want to enjoy it on Linux.
  3. Actually, the retail version is 6 CDs...if you're referring to Mandrake 10.0 Powerpack. I don't know how many Discovery comes with. I bought it a little over a week ago. The retail version also comes with third party software, and lots of plug-ins. It also comes with manuals in case you get lost, and it has free tech support for one month. I realize some people absolutely hate the idea of having to pay for software, but I don't mind supporting Linux. It is after all, much cheaper than Winblows. :D
  4. I wonder if that's my problem? Is there some way I can change it to where I or my wife can burn CDs without logging in as root? I guess the first thing I should do is check to see what kernal I have. What command do you use to find that?
  5. The burner is about 2 years old and still works great under Windows. I have 512 MB of Ram. As far as the steps, I open up K3b, leave the default burniing speed at automatic, and the Write at the default option DAO. I uncheck burn on the fly, because that doesn't work at all. After dragging all my songs to the list, I click burn. The computer then scans all the songs, preparing the image for burning. Immediately after the scan is done, I get that error message. The burner doesn't even seem to initialize, since it doesn't even have time to. A friend of mine was telling me that a newer kernel caused burning problems with K3b. Is anyone aware of this? Could it be a glitch? Before anyone asks, I've already tried different burning speeds and writing methods and still get the "cdrecord did not exit cleanly" message. EDIT: I ran across this post in another thread and I'm wondering if it has any relevance. "Yes, it is a permission issue that I've had as well. You could do what illogic-al said. 1. Check to know you belong to which group or add you to a group, eg. "cdwriter" (Control Center - Configure Your Computer - System - Users & Groups) 2. Open k3b and run k3bsetup 3. In the box "Burning group' (the first box at the top of the window) type the name of the group to which you belong, eg. "cdwriter" 4. Click apply button and OK. K3B should work. Hope this helps" I am not currently a member of any group. Should I create a group and assign myself to it? Could that be the problem?
  6. Everytime I try to burn a CD with K3B, it fials right after it prepares the files for burning. Immediately after it finishes, it says "cdrecord did not exit cleanly" and it stops. It happens every time. What's the deal? I've tried recording at different speeds and tried the DAO and RAW write types. Linux recognizes my burner as a TDKCDRW5200, which is correct. This is driving me nuts.
  7. I have two accounts on my linux machine...one for me and one for my wife. If I want us both to be able to access the same files, like music for example, which directory should I place the folder in?
  8. I've always been curious about Linux. I've always heard how much better it is than Windows in terms of stability and reliability. Plus, I really resent the way Microsoft wants to patent EVERYTHING computer related. Some friends of mine told me about Linux and they recommended I try Mandrake, since it's easy for beginners. I got a couple of beginner Linux books and both recommended Mandrake for beginners. So.....I ordered it about a week ago and now I'm running Mandrake 10.0 as my primary OS. :) I like it a lot so far. I'm going to go for my Linux+ and LPIC level 1 certifications so I will understand Linux on a deeper level. The Linux community seems so much friendlier than the world of Windows. I'm glad I made the switch.
  9. XP is still there and I can boot into it just fine. If I wanted to have that fat32 partition for data files, what should I do so I won't make the same mistake again? If I create the two ext3 partitions, what will that affect the fat32 partition in any way? I guess what I'm saying is, how should I set it up?
  10. I have a Belkin UPS that I've been using for a couple years now, under Windows XP. Since I recently switched over to Mandrake 10.0, is the UPS just a useless device attached to my computer now? I checked Belkin's website, and they don't offer support for Linux. Am I just out of luck?
  11. Ok, what's the real differences between Mandrake and Linspire? I realize they are different distros, but does anyone have any experience with Linspire? Is Mandrake more powerful, or are they both about the same? I have both of them and I'm trying to figure out which one would be best to run as my primary OS. Any and all inputs welcome. 12. YES!! THANK YOU!! YOU ROCK!

    cdrom

Wait...what was the fix action? What did you do?

    "System freeze"

Someone said this exact thing in another thread, but it was regarding a Compaq USB keyboard. Once he replaced it with a PS/2 keyboard, the problem vanished. Does Mandrake have issues with USB devices or something?
  15. I have a Soundblaster Audigy sound card and I get sound from Mandrake, but only through the front two speakers. I have a 4.1 speaker set up. How do I get sound from my sub and rear speakers?
  16. Have any of you ever read Linux Magazine? It looks pretty cool. The only downside is the subscription costs $85 because it's a European magazine. I read in a book last night that there is a US version of the magazine, but I haven't seen it. Do any of you guys know what I'm talking about? Any good magazine would do though. I'm looking for the "Maximum PC" of Linux magazines, if ya know what I mean (show off the latest software and hints and tips). However, I don't want one that writes on an Engineering level, like Linux Journal. Does anyone have any good info for me?
  17. Get this guys...when I installed Mandrake on my laptop, it automatically recognized and installed the ATI Radeon driver, but in Windows, it sees it is installed, but won't install a driver for it. I even went to the driver site and tried to install it from there and it won't install because it keeps giving me a "missing file" error message. Go figure, huh? Windows sucks sometimes.
  18. I'm confused about something. When I installed Mandrake on my Laptop, what I had intended to do was install Mandrake in the Windows partition so I could dual boot and have another Fat32 partition for data files. When I installed XP, I formatted 20 GB of the 40 GB hard drive and installed it there and left the remaining 20 GB unformatted. Once XP was installed and ready to go, I installed Mandrake. When it asked me where to install to, I chose the Windows partition. Well, it installed root there, and everything else was installed on the other unformatted drive, so now I don't have a partition for data files. What did I do wrong?
  19. I just installed Mandrake 10.0 a few days ago. I have a 30 GB drive. When I installed the OS, I let it partition everything automatically for me. Out of curiousity, I looked at the root folder and looked at the properties and it's using 3.4 GB out of 5.8. Is this going to be a problem soon? Did it partition itself right, or sholuld there be much more room in there?
  20. Thank you!! This totally worked for me. :D All is well now. Thank you guys so much for helping me out. I hope one day I'll be as knowledgable as you guys so I can help out others. Thanks again!! You guys rock.
  21. It still isn't working. When the installer script runs, it doesn't seem to be trying to install firefox...it seems to be trying to install the actual installer program and it doesn't install to the /usr directory. By default this is where it installs to: file:/tmp/kde-kevin/arkkVVmLR/firefox-installer/firefox-installer See what I mean about how it tries to install the installer file after you run the install file? Also, it created no directories in my home directory.
  22. I tried unsuccessfully several times last night and I still couldn't figure out how to bring up firefox and thunderbird. The only time they came up was after the initial install. Once the screens were closed out, I couldn't find them anymore. They weren't in any of the menus. I've done searches for them, but it only finds the installer files. Is setting up a browser and email client really this complicated?
  23. I could not find anything related to firefox or thunderbird in /usr/bin. I don't understand it. I've done the install 4 times now!
  24. It says "can not run the specified command". I've been at this for 2 hours now and still can't figure out how to use firefox web browser and thunderbird email. Am I installing it wrong or something? I can find the installer file, but not the file that executes the program.
  25. I can't seem to find either one of them even though I've tried to install them three times now.
