  1. The name of the configuration tool is Webmin? Where do I access it from?
  2. I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing. The path to the shortcut should be something like /home/username/thunderbird/thunderbird. I'm not talking about going to start>internet>email. I mean opening up Menudrake and configuring the path for the buttons in your menus.
  3. No, I'm not sure what you mean. How do you add a list of sliders for surround sound?
  4. Does shorewall have a GUI interface, or do you have to configure it via command line?
  5. Double check your path to Thunderbird under Menudrake.
  6. I'm trying to do the same thing at home. Hopefully I'll get a chance over the next couple days. On your Linux machine, you have to go to mandrake control center and somewhere in there you have to enable file sharing. Then, of course, you have to share some directories. I'm not sure how long it will take the changes to replicate, but eventually your Windows 2000 machine will see it, but it won't show up in your workgroup. Browse the entire MS network (instead of clicking on computers near me) and you will see something called MDK10 (or something to that effect) listed as a workgroup. Now, in order to see Windows stuff from Mandrake, you have to configure Samba. Maybe someone else can guide you better here, but I just went to Start>internet>filesharing>smb4. I was able to see all of my shared Windows folders and I mounted them to the hard drive. However, once I logged off, logged on, and tried to access the Windows folders through Konqueror, they just showed up as empty directories. A friend told me that this is because you have to configure Samba to remember the sharing. I don't know how that works. I don't know if this helped you at all or not, but there are plenty of people here more knowledgeable than me. B)

    anti-virus

Tell me more about this firestarter firewall. Is it better than the one the comes with Mandrake? (Shorewall, is it called?) Will Firestarter show you if someone tried to gain access to your machine? I'm already behind a hardware firewall (Netgear router) but would it still be beneficial for me to run a software firewall as well?
  8. Is there supposed to be a 3-d sound button? I don't remember seeing one.
  9. Good question. I'm wondering the same thing.
  10. I have an nVidia Geforce 2 in my main computer and it works great and I've never had any problems with it. However, I have an ATI Radeon 9000 in my laptop and it's a complete pain. Finding a working driver is next to impossible. Linux works fine on it, but XP doesn't like it much.
  11. I have an NVidia GeForce 2 and it works ok, but the 3D rendering doesn't seem to work. None of the 3D (open GL) screen savers will work on my system.
  12. You don't have to remove Kmail. Just add Thunderbird to your email clients list. If they're both in your start menu, just click on Thunderbird, or click on the desktop link.
  13. I like Firefox and lately I've been using Thunderbird for email. It's pretty cool and I like the spam filtering, although I'm still attracted to the interface of Kmail.
  14. I was just curious as if there was a free alternative to Mandrakeonline for security updates and bug fixes. Are there rpm sites or mirrors where these types of fixes can be obtained? It's not the $21.95/year subscription to Mandrakeonline that bothers me...it's the "per host" part. I have two computers with Mandrake on them. If a single subscription covered all your Mandrake machines, I'd jump right on it.
  15. This is what I did and it worked. Right-click on the desktop and select "new link to application". When the box opens, the default icon on the left should be a blue gear. You can change it by clicking on it and picking a new one. In the box next to it (I think it says application) you name it whatever you want. In this case you'd name it Thunderbird. Then on the third tab at the top, you enter the path to the shortcut. In my case it's /home/kevin/thunderbird/thunderbird. For firefox it was /home/kevin/firefox-installer/firefox. Give that a try and see what happens.
  16. This is normal. My computers show as connected on my router when they're powered off too, and they should. Even when your computer is turned off, it is still receiving electrical current. The lights on your router just show that there is a working physical connection. As long as your computer is plugged into the wall and your NIC is working, there should always be a connection. If you unplug your computer from the wall, you break the electrical connection, and your router will show the port drop off.
  17. What is the Linux equivalent to the ipconfig command in Windows?
  18. My laptop has an ATI mobility Radeon 9000 and when I installed Win XP on it, it recognized that it was there, but couldn't find a driver for it. I tried downloading it from my laptop vender, but it kept saying files were missing and it wouldn't load. I also tried the ATI driver CD that came with the laptop and got the same result. Unfortunately, ATI does not have driver support for ATI mobile video cards. Isn't that messed up? Luckily, Mandrake had no problem installing a driver for it. ATI just sucks all around. Their driver support isn't the greatest, that's for sure.

    "System freeze"

This would support the problem with USB devices theory. I wonder if anyone has reported that as a bug?
  20. You should be able to change it. Right-click the icon and choose properties. When the information comes up, and you see the icon representing the shortcut on the left, click on the icon and then it should bring up a menu where you can change the icon. That's how it works in 10.0, so I'm hoping it's the same for you.
  21. Me too. I will try it later tonight and find out.
  22. Would reinstallin k3b fix the problem? If so, what would I need to do? Also, is my kernel version ok, or should I upgrade to a newer one?
  23. Yes, I looked under advanced, but it didn't give me many more options, and none of them dealt with speaker setup. I'll try the alsamixer setup again tonight. Just for future reference, what does it mean when a package has bad signatures?
