  1. This should help: http://wiki.beryl-project.org/index.php/Install/Mandriva As it stands right now, the normal nvidia drivers are not supported by AIGLX. You have to use the beta drivers in order for it to work without compiz and XGL. It's on the AIGLX wiki. The latest drivers work great. If you change the xorg file like they tell you to in that wiki above, everything should work great and it will all load fine. :)

Good question .... I'm using beryl and though I can't say its without problems I think its easier than XGL ... specifically you can startup in normal Gnome with metacity and then activate emerald .... it might still crash.. go wonky ?? but the error messages are a bit more useful IMHO... and it can fall back onto the defined WM ... so you can edit a couple of files and try again.... Yeah, the only way I was able to get everything to work was to install the beta drivers from NVIDIA and then install the latest version of beryl. Start beryl at every login with beryl-manager and it works wonderfully. Lets you change themes on the fly and edit the plugins whenever. Also helps to reload the window manager if it ever goes crazy. I couldn't get it to work very well with XGL. I had to use Compiz and that never worked. I had to uninstall xorg-xgl server extensions and everything drak3d and compiz related and do it myself. There's a lot of stuff you have to add to your xorg.conf file as well. Here's a tutorial on how to install it exactly like that: http://wiki.beryl-project.org/index.php/Install/Mandriva It works wonderfully. I haven't had any major problems with it yet, either.
  3. Can someone tell me what to set so that so many of the pixels aren't wasted off screen when I set my screen to 720p or 1080p? When I turn on my xbox/xbox360 and it is in hidef mode, nothing is put off screen. Even when I put my windows machine in 720p mode nothing is off screen. It's only linux that I have this problem. I've searched, but so far I have found one topic on another forum (not mandriva) that says to just suck it up and live with about 100 pixels being wasted. That's an entire logo! A good portion of the stuff on screen is gone with that! No volume controls or anything! Is there a way to just adjust the x server to put out at 720p but squeeze the image so that those 100 pixels can be off screen without messing with the image? What about a way to simply not have the problem in the first place? Any info is appreciated! Something else that might be important. I've got mandriva 07 configured and everything. I thought it might be changed in this version, but oh well. It's connected to a projector that supports all HD resolutions and mandriva only projects at 1024x768 even though that isn't really supported by the projector and I have to tell all the programs manually to account for 16:9 monitor aspect.
  4. I tried to install a newer mythtv version and mythweb broke, so I formatted and reinstalled fresh. I installed several pear parts and also apache-mpm. Php 4 and 5 are in there, too. I have mysql add-ons and mythweb. It should have every possible thing it needs to run, and it does run. When I run tail /var/log/httpd/error_log, I get: [sat Sep 23 18:23:40 2006] [notice] child pid 29475 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [sat Sep 23 18:24:15 2006] [notice] child pid 29476 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [sat Sep 23 18:35:09 2006] [notice] child pid 29474 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) Segmentation faults from 3 different attempts to acces the site. I don't know what the process that died is, so I can't really fix it. It was something to do with opening and closing a directory, but then I went through and just decided to install everything that looked relevant for php, xml, and pearl to open directories and files. Now, it runs the file but segfaults. Can anyone tell me what to enable or how to set this right? I tried posting on the official mythtv forums, but no one seems to be talking on there.

  6. With the lower frame rate, the video plays back MUCH better. Thanks for that!
  7. Thank you! That helped a lot. It still plays back incredibly choppy no matter what I do, but it is less choppy than it used to be. I hope that the h264 codec decodes more smoothly in the future, though. The file sizes are small and nice, but the video is just so choppy! 8. I use ogg. You can set it so an ogg file at 128 kbps is smaller than a 128 kpbs mp3 file with compression settings and it still sounds better. I have amarok set to take control of my AV500 portable music player and transcode the files before it syncs them to the player. As a result, I have no headaches about the file type what-so-ever. :)
  9. MPEG-2 and h264 have been set as the two standards for blue ray and HD-DVD video, so I decided to try my hand at encoding video and playing it back. Just as a dry run, I recorded the season premier of house and season 2 episode 2 of prison break off of an ATSC stream, then cleaned up the mpeg so it wouldn't be quite so hard to encode. After I encoded the video, I find that it only plays at about 25 fps and begins to REALLY lag behind the audio (which I set as ac3 or a/52 in my two test encodes). Noting that the video should have been at 50 fps, what gives? I tried xine and it played.....but like I said, was slow. I tried mplayer (I used mencoder and x264enc to encode it) but mplayer plays 1 frame per second. Imagine my surprise to find that in windows I can run it through vlc and have it work perfectly. The audio is all synced up and everything. It looks gorgeous with the defaults and everything. I love it! So, what gives with the linux decoding? If it can be encoded in linux, it should be able to be played back in the same software it is encoded in, but....it doesn't work. Is there some huge problem there that I'm unaware of or did I pick a codec that I'm not supposed to? I researched it a lot and it seems that I picked the right one. HD video uses h264, the same basic codec as ipod video only with much higher bit rates and a better block setting, so that's what I put in as the setting. The setting is the default middle ground for High Definition video that will start hitting the market by the end of this year. Since linux is supposedly leading the charge in the encoding market I thought it would be the easiest to get working....but...was I wrong or am I missing something? Anyone have an article I can read up on more information about this if I'm missing something?

Sort-of both at the moment. In the past, at some times I had to have dkms install the card but that would not install everything, so I had to use the nvidia package to get everything working. So now dkms is installed by default, but the mde kerlen I use has something that keeps dkms from even being able to compile anything, so I compile all the drivers myself. Cooker, mde, and custom compile. Always been able to get stuff to work in the past...albeit after I asked someone what the errors meant most of the time. The ATI drivers were installed by default after I tried out the kiosk driver update thing. It installed a bunch of extra drivers that I didn't need. I'm still going through and picking out the ones I don't need from the ones I do. Also, dkms doesn't even work with my kernel very well anyway. I use an NForce4 motherboard. So it's a cooker system? If you have an nvidia card why do you hav e ati drivers installed? Maybe they are conflicting with the nvidia driver. Since ATI driver is using dri it seems likely to me. Remove ATi driver first (if it's for the video card and not for the MoBo chipset). I would say that's what it is, but I'm using xorg 6.9, yet it still doesn't work. Render acceleration and everything is loading, but the xfree library I need never loads and I can't see why. How do I force it to load the correct library or link it myself? That's exactly what is happening! What can I do to get them working? I'd be willing to go back to an earlier xorg if I had to. I'm a 3d artist and being cut off from my 3d apps is killing me. I can't get windows working because some of the windows drivers don't work on 64 bit machines at all. Even in 32 bit mode, so I'm stuck. :( Is it the best to just wait for the newest version of the driver to come out in the unknown future or try to downgrade xorg?

Ok, so it seems that in both the kernel sources that I have for the stock kernel from the mandriva cds and the mde kernel have something done strange so that the nvidia kernel won't compile. I uninstalled the sources and reinstalled them and redownloaded and reinstalled and the nvidia kernel never compiles all the way. The last bit (I'm guessing GL libraries) always fail to compile. It says that the nvidia kernel module was unable to be completely compiled because my running kernel is not the same as the kernel source, yet they are the same. Everything else compiles, but not nvidia. I tried all versions from 7676 and up. None of them work. :( I'd go back to 2005 but I can't now because my motherboard is new and my hard drives are a new sata type that the others wouldn't recognize.

I've been reading up on what I needed to do. The kernel that was on the cd didn't have direct rendering on it apparently and the kernel that I downloaded from mde didn't have it in the source so I couldn't compile it into the thing. I need to get drm and dri enabled and the drivers/modules that it needs, but I'm a newbie at compiling my own x.org. I'll probably just download an rpm and go to the last release. Or maybe my install was just faulty and it didn't install drm/dri? I also found that it should be in the kernel source. But, xfree86-dri was in neither the one on the core updates cd or the mde kernel I downloaded. Maybe it's looking for either a new or old one that isn't in there anymore because there's a better one now? In that case, I need to know how to load a specific one and override its defaults. Does anyone know how to do that or where to go to find out? The dri/drm web sites are lacking in instructions and just say, "The kernel should automatically do it for you."

I got the HDTV card working. The mde kernel had dvb installed, but it wasn't loading for some reason. It just froze on loading the firmware, but when I redownloaded the firmware and tried it...looks like the 12th time's the charm! :D It works! Still no dri, though. :(
  16. cups2-1.2.3-1 is what is needed. It's odd. And, I will do that if I need to, it's just a pain to do because mandrake never sets my graphics card up right and it takes me forever to get it to do so after it finishes not setting it up. Each time I try to reinstall the graphics, something new screws up. I'm using one of the newest nvidia cards that is supposed to be completely supported, but it never picks the right driver, and when it does, 3d is never completely enabled. Like now I am having a terrible time getting direct rendering enabled.
  17. That did nothing. No essid, not link quality. I can't even see wireless networks. Weird. Oh well, I'm sure it will get fixed in the future. My card is probably too new. I mean, I know it works because I have two of them and with one I can scan and see networks, just not get any data through, and with this one I can't see networks, but at times I can get data through even though I'm "not connected" to anything. hahaha I mean, I'm using one of these new MIMO cards, so I never expected it to work really well, but I hoped, you know?
  18. yeah, it keeps telling me the newest libcups2 mde rpm is not there, so I'd need thac's help to get it going or just wait for that rpm to be put up there.

From what I've seen, DPMS is what gives you direct rendering with nvidia, but that was in 7676, so I'll look to see if anything changed in 8764. I have more than one issue with different forms of video things...so I'll post them both here. If you want me to split them into separate threads, I can. I don't know if this has been pointed out before, but someone needs to look into the installer. It doesn't detect if the graphics card is one of the newer series of graphics cards by nvidia. The newest ones do not support the X.org "virtual" line, or I've had a LOT of problems with it that way and I've tried about 5 different versions of their newer cards (the ones that support real-time HDRI and the like). They have to use modes "sizeXxsizeY". It's frustrating to have to do a live init 3 and edit the xorg.config file to vesa driver before you can even begin installation. Afterwards, you have to setup the driver manually. I'm still having problems getting X to start at boot automagically. That I can deal with, but it has direct rendering disabled as well and I'm not sure how to get that working. I tried editing my xfconfig to with option "dri" but that didn't load it. I don't know what to do... The other problem is with my tv tuner card. I have the firmware loaded and everything, but it still doesn't work. It's like DVB has been disabled in the kernel or something. I'm using kernel 2.6.16-1mkdsmp from MDE on a 64-bit machine (but I have it in 32-bit mode because there are way too many problems with 64-bit kernels to make it useable at this time). I have an ATI HDTV Wonder Pro. I tried getting it to work by custom compiling a kernel a while back. I got part of it to work, yes, but the rest, no. For its main analog TV tuner, there doesn't seem to be a module to load, but the ATSC HDTV tuner has a module. It is just not working right. I have the firmware and everything, but it's a no go. the page I used to configure the whole thing is here: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/ATI_HDTV_Wonder When I do modprobes for video and all the required devices, it seems to work. I mean, dmesg says most of what it says in the how to on there, but there is no /dev/dvb directory. When I compiled my own kernel, it loaded the dvb just fine. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out what the problem is and how to fix it?
  25. ah, ok. I have video issues to point out with installation but I'll post that in the hardware topic. The biggest concern I have is getting my printer/scanner to work. It's frustrating to have all this hardware and be unable to use it when it is supported by the whole thing. And thanks for the quick look, Ian. I appreciate it. :)
