  1. I found a link to this Linux Journal article on the PCLinux web site, and it has some really effective tips on how to improve your system performance. The improvement in OpenOffice startup speed is amazing, it starts in about 3 seconds now. Firefox and Thunderbird also seem more responsive.

    The article is at: http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8308

The article is part one of a series, so it should be interesting to read the next installments to see what other ideas the writer has.

  2. Hi AussieJohn,

I'm an Aussie Mandriva user as well (in Adelaide). I haven't had problems with uprmi or the urpmi sources from easyurpmi or the mub web site when I choose 2005 as my distro. I chose mirrors that I have had success with in the past, including planetmirror (australian) and mirrors in sweden and norway, which seem to work well.

  3. You can select different GDM themes at the GDM screen before logging in, or while in Mandrake by running the GDM configurator (located on the System/Configuration/Boot and Init section of the menu).

New themes can be downloaded from http://art.gnome.org/. I have downloaded themes from other sites, however art.gnome.org seems to have the best quality control, even if they don't have the biggest selection.

  4. Have you checked the permissions of the files in your home directory? It is possible that you don't have correct permissions for your profile folders (eg ~/.mozilla in the case of mozilla) Sometimes permissions can change, including when you do an upgrade, or restore from a backup. Mozilla won't start properly if you don't have permissions to access the profile folder, the other programs may be the same.

You can change the permissions so that you have full read/write access to all the files in your home directory. If I was called joe and my home directory was /home/joe I would open a terminal, change to the root account and type:

    chown joe -R /home/joe

    chmod -R u+rwx /home/joe

    chgrp -R joe /home/joe

Try that, it may solve your problem.

  5. I did try changing the location of the palm to those, but it still does nothing. I know the USB ports work with other devices, and the palm does sync on a windows laptop I have at work.

I read in this thread and in some other sites that the Zire device ID in the kernel might need to be changed and the kernel recompiled, but when I browsed the visor.c file in the source I couldn't find the appropriate lines. Maybe support could be added in the kernel by Mandrake in 10.1, if it isn't too late.

If anyone else has some good ideas please let me know. Thanks to those who have replied so far.

  6. A friend of mine recently purchased a palm 72, which comes with a USB cable, not a cradle. He can't get it to sync and neither can I. We tried with the gnome-pilot-applet and using JPilot, as /dev/pilot and /dev/pilot/various other things. I have searched for advice with Google and here, but can't find anything that will get it to work.

Is there a way that it can be made to work with GPilot and sync with Evolution? I'd prefer not to have to rebuild the kernel or write an essay in a text editor to get it working. Surely it can't be that hard? (seems like it though)

  7. A friend of mine got a Palm Zire 72 as well. Unfortunately I can't get it to sync with evolution using gnome-pilot. I have searched with google, and there are some really complicated answers out there! Is there a nice simple way that it can be made to work under Mandrake 10? I dont' want to have to recompile something or edit obscure files, I just want it to work!

Surely it isn't that complicated to get a popular device like this working?

  8. Hi Shakti, I was going to try your method of getting the LAN to work with my dialup connection, but I don't have the file /etc/config/network on my system. Is there another simple method to get dialup working with my LAN that doesn't involve compromising my security?

I did manage to get both working at the same time, but I have probably just reduced my security level to zero. I edited the /etc/shorewall/policy file and changed all the settings to ACCEPT.

I tried the firestarter firewall, and it enabled me to use PPP dialup and my LAN at the same time. It was easy to use, but it doesn't work with KPPP unless you manually start it after you are connected.

Has anyone else got some simple methods of getting this working? I have tried reading the shorewall documentation, but find it difficult. Thanks in advance.

  9. I haven't got a mouse cursor in Quake 3, Rune, Unreal Tournament or Soldier of Fortune in Mandrake 9.1. It makes it almost impossible to play most of the games.

I don't know how to make the cursor visible, but hopefully the problem and solution for all of the games is the same, and not too complicated! I have a Matrox G450 graphics card, maybe that is part of the problem.

Thanks to anyone who can help out.

  10. I am trying to compile xmame from source on MDK8.2. I have done it before, but I currently have files from both gcc 2.96 and 3.0 on my PC, including gcc-cpp 3.0. I can't install version 2.96 of gcc-cpp, and I think it is needed for the compile. I have tried to uninstall gcc-cpp 3.0 with the software manager, but it doesn't really disappear, and I can't replace it with the earlier version.

Is there a way I can get rid of all the version 3.0 gcc files and replace them with 2.96, or can I get this to compile with version 3.0? I have searched on google for help but couldn't find anything. Your help is appreciated.
